I found the news that only 14 percent of the adult population in the US eats at least five servings of fruits and veggies depressing. I know there are days where I fall short too, but I am striving for five servings daily.
One way I have started to incorporate a serving of greens into my day is to place them on top of an open-faced sandwich.

Many people are worried about high mercury counts in fish, so they're swearing off seafood. The thing is, many types of fish are low in saturated fat, are an excellent source of lean protein, and are high in essential heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. I'm not saying that mercury is something to overlook, since this toxin can cause brain damage, and possibly cancer, but it doesn't mean you need to give up fish entirely.

When it comes to eating, we're very visual people. If food looks delicious, we're more likely to eat and enjoy it, and research shows that the more that's in front of us, the more we have an appetite for. Since we tend to eat whatever is on our plate, set yourself up for success by giving yourself an appropriate portion size.

The dorm dining hall can be dangerous — like a giant, all-you-can-eat buffet available all day, every day. It's no wonder most of us gain some weight when going off to college, though the infamous "freshman 15" is really more like 10 pounds.
Whether you're eating in a dining hall or cooking for yourself in your first apartment, a few simple strategies can help you avoid that first-year college weight gain.

Warmer weather makes bunches of bananas turn brown quicker, so before you have to throw them away, freeze them to use for smoothies or banana bread. Just unpeel your nanner, wrap it in plastic wrap, and pop it in the freezer. You can add the frozen banana right to the blender for a fruit smoothie, and for banana bread or muffins, allow them to thaw first.

Toasted bagels, blueberry muffins, and warm waffles with fruit are some of my favorite choices for breakfast. Although they're tasty, they don't offer much protein. This essential nutrient makes you feel full and gives you sustained energy.

You may have heard that eating apples can help you cut back on calories. According to one study, participants who chomped on this crispy fruit 15 minutes before a meal consumed almost 200 fewer calories than those who didn't.
Since I often go straight home for dinner after my post-work gym session, I've started eating an apple as my post-workout snack.

Homemade pancakes have become a weekend tradition in my family, but I know that if I eat a stack doused in syrup, I end up feeling tired and hungry within an hour. If this sounds familiar, try this the next time you're making pancakes: add tons of fruit to the batter. I don't mean just a few pieces — really load up the batter.

Snacks are an important part of a healthy diet. If you only eat three meals a day, you'll be starving by mealtimes, which most likely will result in overeating. Plus living with hunger pangs is a surefire way to become tired and moody, and you may not end up making it to your next meal before devouring the first unhealthy snack you set your eyes on.

If you've taken my Chipotle burrito quiz, you know that these simple Mexican wraps can contain some very serious calories.
It's easier to eat smart when making burritos at home, but what about when eating out? By making a few smart choices at the burrito counter, you can make your meal lower in calories and fat and better for you overall.
