You know how some restaurants highlight their lighter offerings in an attempt to woo their healthier customers? Well, at Panera Bread, some of the healthiest and most flavorful options don't appear anywhere on their menu. It turns out that earlier this year, Panera Breads nationwide started offering a new lineup of "power foods" with lean proteins, complex carbohydrates and veggies as part of its all-new Hidden Menu. These six "power foods" items aren't promoted in-store, but fans and followers of Panera's social media channels will get the inside scoop. Lucky for you, we've got the inside scoop now, too. Check out the six pack here — plus the skinny on each of 'em.

Success Is Possible With Pay-What-You-Can Cafés

The recession has curtailed consumer food spending, but some restaurants refuse to let that keep customers away — literally, at all costs.

The recession has curtailed consumer food spending, but some restaurants refuse to let that keep customers away — literally, at all costs. Take the honor-based billing system, for instance: drink and dine, and what you pay is entirely up to you and your conscience. On many occasions, customers don't receive bills but rather "suggested donations."

That's the case at Panera Bread's Panera Cares Community Cafes. One year into opening its first pay-what-you-can concept in Clayton, MO, the national chain's nonprofit cafes have been deemed a success. According to Panera, 60 percent of patrons fulfill the requested "suggested donation," while 20 percent actually exceed the amount; in total, the cafe sees $100,000 a month in revenue. Panera's since opened two more community cafes — one in Dearborn, MI, and another in Portland, OR.

Other establishments are following in the chain's footsteps; even Jon Bon Jovi is opening a pay-what-you-can concept. It's refreshingly hopeful to see that this model can work, even when times are still tough for the average American. Would you welcome the rise of more charitable cafes?

Do Posted Calorie Amounts Affect Your Food Choices?

While traveling last weekend, I found myself hungry for breakfast and came upon a Panera Bread.

While traveling last weekend, I found myself hungry for breakfast and came upon a Panera Bread. I thought it'd be a great place to pick up some fruit and a bagel, but when I walked in, my taste buds had a different agenda. Yummy baked muffins stared at me from behind the glass display and I was tempted to order a carrot walnut muffin instead, until I noticed that the calorie amounts were posted right next to it. 440 calories! For one muffin?! I was psyched to see that Panera has the calories posted for all their menu items, but I quickly changed my mind.

Would You Prefer a Good Breakfast or Extra Sleep?

The folks at Panera Bread just revealed the results to a new survey about breakfast.

The folks at Panera Bread just revealed the results to a new survey about breakfast. In their survey they discovered that 73 percent of Americans would choose a good breakfast over an extra 15 minutes of sleep. I found this hard to believe as most of the people I know rarely have the chance to eat breakfast. And as much as I love breakfast — and I do love breakfast — I'd opt for an extra 15 minutes of sleep. So tell me, which would you prefer? A good breakfast or extra sleep?

Fill Your Bagel Craving With a Panera Pink Ribbon Bagel

If you're looking for another way to justify your breakfast bagel, Panera Bread — sort of like Starbucks, but with baked goods — has just released a bagel in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

If you're looking for another way to justify your breakfast bagel, Panera Bread — sort of like Starbucks, but with baked goods — has just released a bagel in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The bagel, which is shaped like a ribbon and called the Pink Ribbon, is made with cherry chips, dried cherries and cranberries, vanilla, honey and brown sugar. A proceed of each Pink Ribbon bagel sale will benefit various breast cancer charities, including the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization. This is the seventh year Panera has done this promotion, last year they raised almost $200,000 from sales and donations.
