You may know Pocky and Green Tea Kit Kats, but there's a whole world of Japanese snacks that your taste buds have yet to taste. We consulted with Japan Crate, a snack delivery subscription, to tell us the most popular Japanese snack flavors that you have got to get your hands on, whether on your next trip to Japan or through a service that will ship those fun snacks directly to your door.

Mentaiko (Pollock Roe)

Mentaiko (Pollock Roe)

Yes, roe-flavored snacks may sound weird, but Japanese snackers can't get enough of these corn puffs (like a Cheetos Puff). Japan Crate said, "These chips are a ring version of the delicious Umaibo Sticks." Having had Umaibo Sticks, I can attest to their addictiveness. They are like giant Cheetos Puffs.

Umami (Savory)

Umami (Savory)

A Japanese chemist coined the term umami, and while it translates to "tasty," here in America it's used to describe savory flavors. According to Japan Crate, popular savory snacks in Japan include Mentaiko Chips and Cheetos Kyushu Soy Sauce. Even more unusual is Umakamon Mayonnaise snack. Japan Crate told us, "Believe it or not, mayo is a popular flavor in Japan and taste different than your typical Hellman's Mayo. Based on Kewpie, the flavor is a little creamier than what you'd expect." The bottom right is a fried noodle snack called Sobameshi. "If you like eating dry [instant] ramen, this is for you!" said Japan Crate.

Ebi (Shrimp)

Japan Crate told us, "Chip Star and Mike Popcorn are like the Pringles or Pirate's Booty of Japan." And the "original" flavor of choice in Japan? Ebi!

Matcha (Green Tea)

Matcha (Green Tea)

Matcha, an emerald green powder made from finely ground green tea leaves, is one of the most common and popular dessert flavors. Biscuits, cookies, pies, and more come in this coveted flavor that tastes earthy and slightly roasted.

Ichigo (Strawberry)

Ichigo Pocky, strawberry-jelly-filled marshmallows, and even Meito Taiyaki, a fish-shaped biscuit shell filled with whipped strawberry chocolate, are just a few fun, unexpected snacks that come in ichigo flavor.
