Sloane Stephens is a true professional. She can hit a tennis ball in ways few of us can ever dream, and she knows how important her physical and mental well-being is, so she puts a massive focus on recovery and self-care. We got the chance to chat with the athlete at her home in Boston, right as she was beginning serious preparations for the Australian Open in January, and we talked about everything from skin-care routines to creature comforts on the road, as she's traveling up to 40 weeks out of the year.

Professional athletes, and particularly tennis players, are known to have pre-match rituals, and Stephens is no different. She has a morning and nighttime routine, as well as a tournament routine. "When I start a tournament, I like to eat the same thing all the time. That's my one superstition that I do often. I make everyone that's with me, including my mom, my coaches, we all have to eat at the same place. And it's a very bad habit, but that's one thing that if you are coming to the tournament with me you know that we're going to be eating consistently at the same place. So you better check out the menu. I always gravitate towards Indian food and Korean BBQ."

As if being an elite athlete wasn't impressive enough, she also knows good products. Though she talked about the items she's using at home in freezing cold Boston, as a California-based writer, I found myself adding everything to her shopping cart. We were also fascinated by her serious commitment to recovery, which makes sense when your physicality is part of your job. From adjusting her skin-care routine based on the climate of her tournaments to lymphatic drainage and cryotherapy, Stephens is incredibly diligent and in-tune with what she needs to feel her best, and we could all take a page from her book. Keep on reading to shop all her must have products.

Sloane Stephens' Affordable Must Have: Exfoliating Gloves

Stephens is currently living in Boston, where it is supremely cold, and she uses these Exfoliating Gloves ($13) as a physical exfoliator. With regards to using these gloves, she notes that "it's definitely not an everyday thing. It's more of when you see fit type of thing . . . I do find myself navigating the climates and what it's going to be where I am." Her needs at home in Boston, where it's both cold and dry, are much different than when she's at a tournament in a climate like Australia, where it's 115 degrees and she's sunburnt, and it's super important for her to be in tune with her body and know what will work for her when she needs it.

Pro Tip: Stephens also uses these gloves for lymphatic drainage, a staple in her recovery routine. "My at-home recovery is totally different from my tennis recovery. Obviously, my at-home recovery, for me, is taking a warm bath, doing Epsom salts, doing a bubble bath, lymphatic drainage. It's totally different than my recovery at work . . . I'm biking, I'm stretching, I'm getting a deep tissue massage every single day. I'm doing the cold plunge after my practices. I'm doing the cryo freeze."

Sloane Stephens' Investment Must Have: La Mer The Renewal Oil Face Oil

We love a good luxury skin-care product, and Stephens does too. She has dry skin, and a pretty simple skin-care routine, but always finishes it off with this La Mer The Renewal Oil Face Oil ($270). "I do a cleanser, I do a serum, just a regular moisturizer. I do [the oil] at the very end. It's just a really nice ending. It feels nice. It kind of seals everything." Technically this is a multipurpose oil, suitable for your face, nails, hair, and body, but Stephens says, "this oil I only use on my face . . . I like to wake up and my skin to be very soft. I don't like to wake up and feel like I left all of my products on my pillow . . . I don't want to waste my stuff. I'm paying good money for this. It needs to go inside my skin." We can definitely relate.

Pro tip: Stephens is on the road a whopping 40 weeks of the year, and not just that, but "sometimes you play late matches, sometimes you're playing at one a.m." In such unpredictable situations, Stephens returns back to her skin-care routine, saying "I keep it very simple and compact, because I know even if I finish at one a.m., or I'm getting back to the hotel at midnight, I can do my [skin-care routine] and it's something I can feel really good about."

Sloane Stephens' Morning Routine Must Have: By Rosie Jane Wake the F*ck Up Body Oil

Stephens and I had a good laugh about the brilliant name of this By Rosie Jane Wake the F*ck Up Body Oil ($40), which, according to Stephens, "matches exactly the oil. When you put it on, it's very lemony. It's very sense heightening. You're putting it on. You're being like, 'Ooh, wow, this is good.' And I think when I found it . . . I was like, what an interesting name. But it had so many good reviews on the product actually matching the name . . . I'm always so dry in the morning when I wake up, especially here, it's winter . . . And since I've gotten it, I've used it every single day. It is very strong. So if you don't like strong scents, then I would be like, mm, but it does wake you up." We might just have a new favorite winter body oil.

Pro tip: Stephens says that she uses this oil to wake up in the morning, in part because of its strong citrus scent. The other nonnegotiable in her morning routine? Sunscreen, which she says is the "one thing in my routine that I do every day no matter what." Her favorites include the Neutrogena cream, the Barbara Sturm sun drops, and the Neutrogena face stick, "which I use because I'm normally applying right before I'm going on the court. And I just hate having to touch my face with sunscreen and then hold my racket. It makes the grip weird."

Sloane Stephens' Sleep Must Have: Slip Pure Silk Pillowcase

Being on the road so frequently, Stephens needs a few creature comforts, one of which being the Slip Pure Silk Pillowcase ($89 - $110). "I bring it on the road with me, because you literally just have to put the pillow in it. So it's super easy. It folds, honestly, like a sheet of paper. You don't have to do anything. You literally just fold up and put it in your bag." The silk pillowcase is a favorite of editors and celebrities alike, such as Ayesha Curry, Jonathan Van Ness, and Suni Lee, because it's a little bit of luxury you can bring with you anywhere, as Stephens says, "traveling so much, having something from home is always nice."

Pro tip: The other cornerstone of her nighttime routine is a good candle. "When I light my candle, that means that it's like, this is the time, honey. You can do whatever you want to do, but you need to just close the mind and start to really tap into sleep time. So I always light a candle before bed. An hour before bed, I would say, and that's my indication of like, okay, we're heading to snooze land." When it comes to her nonnegotiables, Stephens says, "I always travel with the candle, I always travel with the pillowcase."

Sloane Stephens' Sneaker Must Have: Air Jordan 1 Sneakers

As a Nike athlete, Stephens has unique access to all the coolest sneakers in the world, so it's no wonder that, if she had to choose a favorite pair, it would be the Air Jordan 1 Sneakers ($125). When asked about her preferred way to style Jordan 1's, she said, "I feel like they literally go with everything. Whether you're wearing long pants, whether you're wearing shorts, you can then throw high socks on the Jordan 1 highs, or if you're wearing mids, there's so many things that you can do with it. And like I said, high low pieces, you could wear literally a Gucci jacket with Jordan 1's. You could wear all athleisurewear with Jordan 1's. You can do so many cool things with it, which I think is why the Jordan brand is so versatile, because they have so many options."

Pro tip: When pressed for a favorite colorway, Stephens said, "The off-white UNCs. Those are the light ones. Those are really cute. Or there's the regular Chicago, which is red, white and black. Kind of just goes with everything." We would be happy to get our hands on any or all of those.
