You know that point when you're packing for a trip where it looks like a tornado tore through your closet and left debris all over your room? That was the status of Mikaela Shiffrin's surroundings when we hopped on a video call in mid-September to chat about her partnership with Barilla. (Professional athletes, they're just like us!) Only she wasn't packing for a long weekend or breezy vaca. Shiffrin was packing for more or less six months in Europe for the 2023-2024 World Cup alpine skiing season, which is now underway.

"I'm mostly just excited to get over to Europe, get on snow, and just kind of get into a routine. Because right now, this period is just a lot of packing. It's a lot of last-minute scattered things. Once we get there, I'm actually going to be able to take a breath for the first time in several weeks," she tells POPSUGAR.

Shiffrin was officially named the "greatest skier of all time" in March after winning her 87th World Cup victory, making her the current all-time record holder for most World Cup wins. She's headed into this season fearlessly targeting her sixth overall title. The first event is coming up hot: Shiffrin will race on Oct. 28 in the Alpine Ski Championship Season Opener in Sölden, Austria.

What's in her travel bags? Read on to hear more about Shiffrin's must-have products, including the sneakers she's been wearing for years, her go-to green powder, and a skin-care staple that's almost too fittingly named "Queen of the Winter."

I know what you're thinking: Barilla Penne Pasta ($2) a must have for a professional athlete? Must be for carb loading. But for Shiffrin, who's also a Barilla global partner, it's more about comfort. When you're constantly traveling to compete, you're at the mercy of what's available via restaurants and hotels, she says. If she's already nervous about a competition, she generally will play it safe with her meals — and pasta is pure comfort food. "A well-moderated diet, that's really kind of my go-to — and carbs are absolutely a staple," she says. "I will have pasta probably six days a week."

And there is a bit of a nutritional component, too: "Around races, I get a little nervous, and I don't have a huge appetite, especially on really, really early mornings where I don't feel like eating breakfast," she says. "So it's always really important that the night before races and the night after a race, I get really a good, well-balanced, and very replenishing meal."

Pro Tip: Shiffrin loves a carbonara or spaghetti aglio e olio (spaghetti with olive oil and garlic), though she'll often order her pasta with a side of veggies to make it a more well-balanced meal.

If you can trust anyone for a winter-proof skincare rec, it's someone who spends her career on icy slopes. This Romi Apothecary Queen of the Winter Facial Oil ($47) is made by a first-generation Asian-American, woman-owned business. "It's a more-or-less handmade product," Shiffrin says. And it's really good. "It's the one thing that I love to travel with for winter and dry and harsh conditions," she says.

Pro tip: This oil is made with Minnesota-grown marshmallow root, which has soothing, softening, and moistening properties; sea buckthorn extract, a powerhouse skin-care ingredient that promotes collagen production and is rich in vitamin C; plus, antioxidant-rich cold-pressed fruit and seed oils, many of which are certified organic. Layer on oil as the final step in your skin-care routine at night.

Earlier this year, Shiffrin spent a month at a training camp in Chile, and that's when she hopped on the AG1 Pouch, 30-Day Supply ($99) train. "I started using it before we went to Chile because you're not really supposed to eat the raw vegetables and salads and things like that," she says. (And she did, unfortunately, still get food poisoning while she was there.) "One way to get those nutritional pieces, you can do it through a green powder. I don't think it's as good as just eating proper food. But when you don't have access to that — this is what I've been researching — it seems to be a good alternative."

Pro Tip: Shiffrin is spot-on with her green-powder knowledge. Green powders "can be a great option when you're traveling or on the road and do not have as much access to fresh fruits and veggies, Marissa Meshulam, MS, RD, CDN, founder of MPM Nutrition, previously told POPSUGAR. "Plus, they tend to be a quite concentrated source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, meaning you're able to take in way more than you would typically be able to eat, which can provide an extra boost of the nutrients."

Shiffrin has silk pillowcases stashed everywhere — at her boyfriend Aleksander Aamodt Kilde's apartment in Europe, at home, and in her travel bag. She loves this Slip Silk Pillowcase in Navy ($89) as well as the ones by Blissy, though she's not picky. "I just love them for skin and hair," she says. Plus, when you're traveling, you rely a lot on other people to keep spaces clean. For Shiffrin, having her own pillow can bring a little more peace of mind.

Pro Tip: If you're going to travel with your own pillowcase like Shiffrin, don't opt for white. "I need to have a colorful pillowcase when I'm traveling, so I don't forget it at hotels," she says. Her favorite is a dark blue.

The Adidas Superstar Shoes ($100) have been a staple in Shiffrin's wardrobe for years. "These come with me everywhere," she says. "I'm kind of a sneakerhead and I have multiple pairs . . . I've been obsessed with the look and the shape of them since I was probably, I don't know, 9. All the cool kids at school always had their Superstars, and I was like, 'I want a pair.'" Despite her growing collection, this Adidas pair always get a space in her suitcase at the expense of other footwear.

Pro Tip: When it comes to styling these lifestyle sneaks, "everything goes," Shiffrin says. "I love a good dress and Superstar look, but I don't really bring dresses with me when I'm traveling for skiing. So I like boyfriend-style baggy jeans and a white T-shirt." Classic.
