Viola Davis's "The First Lady" Canceled at Showtime After One Season

Showtime's would-be anthology series "The First Lady" has been canceled, Showtime confirmed to POPSUGAR and Variety first reported on Aug. 2.

"The First Lady" focused on the stories of several of Washington, DC's first ladies, and the first season featured Viola Davis — who also executive produced the series along with JuVee Productions, the company she runs with her husband, Julius Tennon — as Michelle Obama.

Season one followed Eleanor Roosevelt, Betty Ford, and Obama. The series was originally on order for three scripts, but Showtime ordered a full season, having it join other network series including "The L Word," "Shameless," and "On Becoming a God in Central Florida." In the inital installment, Lexi Underwood played Malia Obama; Dakota Fanning played Susan Ford; O-T Fagbenle played Barack Obama; Michelle Pfeiffer played Betty Ford; and Gillian Anderson played Eleanor Roosevelt.

Unfortunately, season one is all we'll ever get to see see of the series. "Showtime can confirm that the anthology series 'The First Lady' will not be moving forward with another season," a rep told POPSUGAR in a statement. "We would like to applaud the artistry and commitment of our showrunner Cathy Schulman, director Susanne Bier, their fellow executive producers, our amazing cast, led by executive producer Viola Davis, Michelle Pfeiffer and Gillian Anderson, and our studio partner Lionsgate for their dedicated work in telling the unique stories of three remarkable leaders."
