T.J. Holmes and Amy Robach's Relationship Scandal, Explained

Former "Good Morning America" co-anchors T.J. Holmes and Amy Robach were both married to other people — Robach to actor Andrew Shue and Holmes to attorney Marilee Fiebig — when, on Nov. 30, 2022, photos emerged of the pair enjoying what appeared to be a romantic weekend in upstate New York. This led to their rumored relationship going public and the pair were soon taken off their morning show for good following the revelation.

Robach and Holmes remained relatively quiet for a long time after news of their relationship broke. But on Nov. 1, 2023, they shared a joint Instagram post that revealed they're launching a podcast together called "Amy and T.J." on Dec. 5. Their caption read, "How's this for instagram official? #silentnomore 🎤."

Holmes and Robach — both of whom were reportedly already separated from their respective partners when their relationship surfaced — have always seemed to stay positive in the wake of the dust-up. Holmes even joked about it in a December 2022 broadcast of "GMA" shortly after initial reports. "You know, it's too bad it's Friday. It's been a great week," he said. "I just want this one to keep going and going and going. Just enjoy it! Take it all in." Meanwhile, Robach responded, "Speak for yourself. The whole saga began on Nov. 30, 2022, when the Daily Mail published photos of Holmes amd Robach, which included several shots of them drinking beers, walking around, and holding hands in a car. The day the photos appeared online, both hosts deleted their Instagram accounts. Neither addressed the images directly and reps for both hosts did not respond to POPSUGAR's request for comment at the time.

Shortly after the photos emerged, a source told People that Robach and Holmes were not together with their then-spouses when the pictures were taken. "This was two consenting adults who were each separated. They both broke up with their spouses in August within weeks of each other," the source alleged. "The relationship didn't start until after that." A source also told Entertainment Tonight that the pair's relationship had been "going on in secret for quite some time, but how long is truly unknown," adding that they "did their best to keep things professional and private."

Both former anchors married their respective partners in 2010. After photographs of them together surfaced, Robach's husband, Shue, appeared to delete all pictures of her from his Instagram account, according to E! News. Fans also noticed that Robach's wedding ring seemed to be missing from her finger in a few November 2022 Instagram posts, according to In Touch Weekly.

Robach filed for divorce from Shue in March 2023 after 13 years of marriage, per The Los Angeles Times. Robach has two girls, Annalise and Ava, from a previous marriage, while Shue shares three sons — Nate, Aidan, and Wyatt — with ex-wife Jennifer Hageney.

Meanwhile, on Dec. 28, 2022, E! News reported that Holmes filed for divorce from Fiebig after nearly 13 years of marriage. Their divorce was was finalized in October 2023, per the LA Times. Holmes and Fiebig share one child, a daughter named Sabine. Holmes also has a son and daughter, Jaiden and Brianna, and from a previous marriage.

Before their divorce, Holmes frequently shared expressions of love for his ex-wife. "If she would even spare another 10 minutes of her time for me today, I should consider myself blessed," he wrote in a 2020 tribute to Fiebig to celebrate 10 years of marriage. However, in November 2022, he shared a quote on Instagram that read, "End the relationship and cry once. It's better than being with them and crying daily," according to Us Weekly.

In the past, Holmes and Robach were open about their friendship. "The moment he started at ABC, I think we just clicked," Robach previously told People. "We've gone on tons of double dates with our spouses, and my daughters babysit his daughters."

On Dec. 5, 2022, People reported that both Holmes and Robach would be placed on hiatus amid their relationship scandal. "'GMA' decided to have a period of cooling down because they thought this was unwanted attention," a source told the publication. "So, for the time being, they're going to be off the air."

According to the insider, ABC News President Kim Godwin shared the news with staff that morning. "During the routine 9 a.m. editorial call, Kim Godwin said she wanted to address the internal and external distraction between two colleagues," an insider told the outlet. "She said even though this isn't a violation of policy, she took time to think about it and wanted to work through what was best and for now, they've decided to take TJ and Amy off the air while they figure things out. Gio Benitez and Stephanie Ramos will host 'GMA3' today, but it's likely to vary over the week."

At the time of their initial removal, reports claimed that Robach and Holmes wouldn't face disciplinary actions for their relationship. Per Entertainment Tonight, this was because Holmes and Robach were equals and consenting adults. "There has still been no word from management addressing their relationship, but that's all anyone can talk about around the office," a source revealed to ET at the time. "When and if they will ever address the elephant in the room, it's still unclear."

On Jan. 27, 2023, though, news broke that the pair would not be returning to their show. A rep from ABC News confirmed the news to POPSUGAR in a statement. "After several productive conversations with Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes about different options, we all agreed it's best for everyone that they move on from ABC News," it read.
