I heard a rumor - that gelatin is really made up of ground up hooves and bones - Is this true?
Don't shoot the messenger - but it's the truth. Gelatin is a translucent, colorless, odorless, and nearly tasteless substance that is made by prolonged boiling of skin, cartilage and bones from animals. It's made primarily from the stuff meat industries have left over - we're talking about pork skins and cattle bones. Yummy.
If this is news to you, it may shed new light on your Great Aunt's Jell-O mold. And if you love eating chewy candy, you may think twice before chowing down on those gummy worms - yup - they're made with gelatin too. Who knew?
I guess if you're into the philosophy of using the whole animal, you'll be psyched about this. And gelatin is a unique nutritional protein, providing many essential amino acids.

DAY Birger et Mikkelsen
I tell my wife this all the time and she always disagrees. I can't wait to forward this to her
1I don't care, it's still yummy and I'm still eating it. Most of the crap we eat every day is chemicals anyway.
2I heard this a long time ago....I think my dad told me this at the same time that he told me that glue was made from horses... which may or may not be true
3This just backs up my claim that enrages my friends...
Jello= Ew.
I'm all in.
4I brought some Jello in my lunch today...I'm not scared to eat it.
5I use to work next to a jello factory. One day you smelled watermelon or cherry in the air, the next week...boiling horse hooves,
Funny thing, is that it hasn't stopped me from eating my jello snacks or those yummy gummy candies
like the rootbeer bottles and sugar coated peach gummies
.
6I knew gelatin was used in gummies but wasn't sure what gelatin was made of. Hmm make have to think twice about eating those Swedish fish.
7I love Swedish Fish. I am not reading this blog.
8
I agree with J. I was *just* coming here to say that I love me some jell-o and will not be
reading this thankyouverymuch. Someone please tell me if it says that gelatin will kill me immediately. Otherwise...:earplugs:
9I read this blog, and it won't stop me from eating all things gummy and delicious.
Actually, I've never been a big fan of Jell-O. I only like it when it's mixed with booze.
10oh yea, trust me, it won't stop me either!
11I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE gummy worms, swedish fish, all the gummy candies... jello, I like, but I don't LOVE... still.... not reading any more!!!! just in case....
12So, does this mean Vegans can't eat this stuff?
I think I heard this a long time ago, and it never deterred my Jello-eating. Come on, it's SUPER easy to make and probably one of the best desserts for you.
Who knew hooves could taste so yummy?
13you just have to think that the person who came up with this stuff had to be a genius! who would have thought to boil animal scrap parts and make some wonderful sweets out of it?
14Gelatin is great for your nails, and hair..at least that's what I've heard.
15Who knew? Now, I do and I adore gummy worms and bears. I thought they were somewhat healthy; I will continue treating myself to them when I fly.
16yeah seriously, i love sour patch kids.... i bet they are full of gelatin!
17BB it is! Wow.... ok.... Im not really grossed out but then again i am but not enough that I wont forget about this in 2 seconds and go back to eating my gummi bears.
18t0xxic, I agree. I've heard what gelatin is made of before..so, I'm not that grossed out although, I was hoping it was a myth. lol
19Yeah lets forget we ever read this. And get some gummie bears LOL!!
20I'll never give up my swedish fish!!! Just don't think about it and you're all good.
21I feel good that the unused parts of a horse are going to good use. & not just into the trash. Someone gbrought chocolate covered gummy worms into the office the other day. They were gross. But give me Aunt Kathys orange carrot Jello mold thingy at thanks giving any day....yum, goddamnit, YUM!
22Yes, Butrfly - you're right. Vegans don't eat anything with gelatin. But they make gelatin-free gummy bears now. Planet Harmony makes them.
23Ew...heard this before, always thought it was a myth, and now, well, I think I'd rather eat a REAL worm that this stuff. MAN! I used to LOVE this stuff...lol
Eh, I guess I've eaten gross things before though...like yogurt (live bacteria), meat(it's muscle...ew), hotdogs (I only by beef but STILL), milk (it comes from a cow's boob. Weird.), eggs (chicken period, anyone?), if you think about everything you do eat & stop eating those things, you might just starve...lol. I guess there's something gross in most everything, huh?
Either way, I think I'll stick to snowcaps at the movies instead...lol
24That is SO gross, but I'm still going to eat the candies.
25marshmallows are made with gelatin, too! and i knew a vegan who looked at the ingrediants on every package of candy to check if it had gelatin in it. she wouldn't eat it if it did! that's when i learned that marshmallows have gelatin in them.
i think i learned about the jello/gelatin/horse hooves thing when i read "animal farm" freshman year of high school.
26Nope not going to stop eating Swedish Fish.
27This is still true? I knew they did this back in the day, but I thought it was made of something different now! OH NO!!!! I love my gummy worms...and anything else soft and chewy...in fact, i ate a whole bag last night.
SO SAD!!!!
~Bonnie~
28WOW!!!! THIS IS SO GROSS AND WHAT EVERYONE SAID ON HERE IS TOO GROSS I REALLY WISH YOU GUYS WOULD STOP AND THINK.... THAT'S GOING INTO YOUR BODY... ITS SO DISGUSTING .... AND ITS SO NOT HEALTHY IT WILL STAY IN YOUR SYSTEM .... PLEASE DO NOT EAT GELATIN AND DERIVATIVES OF THE STUFF.... PLEASE DO IT FOR YOUR SAFETY AND THE ANIMALS.... DID I MENTION ITS GROSS!!!!!!!
29For those who are concerned about Swedish Fish, don't be. Swedish Fish do not contain gelatin. Most of the other crap tho... *blecchh*
30I'm a vegetarian and I've always known this, even so I could NEVER give up gummy bears. It sucks, but my reasoning is that they don't kill the animals for their bones, they kill them for their meat.
So I think it's still alright to consider
myself a vegetarian because I don't eat meat or fish.
31ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
32To the person who said they're vegetarian: If you can give up meat and fish, how can you not give up gelatin-based candies? That's extremely hypocritical of you if you're doing it for the reasons of animal cruelty.
To the people who refuse to read this because you don't want to know: That's ridiculous. Why would anyone choose to live their lives in ignorance ESPECIALLY when it comes to things you ingest.
To the people who eat this and know what's in it: I'm a vegetarian, but I respect you guys more than the other two types of people listed above. You aren't being hypocritical and you're not being absolutely ridiculous.
33I always knew about the gelatin thing, I have to check every pack of sweets before I eat one (I'm a vegetarian).
34Today I discovered there's gelatin in the yoghurt I've been eating. And I feel sooo awful O.O I'm so sorry whatever animal it is that I've eaten.... :,( I feel so horrible.
I think on every gelatin or gummy pack most write what`s inside (ingrediens). I`m muslim and i don`t eat pork and horse. In this way companyes will be more respectable.I didn`t now before how is gelatin made. Respect for all...
