This summer we'll all be able to say "ooh that makes my mouth tingle." At least we will if we have a piece of Wrigleys new gum "5" (yep, that's the name, no letters, just the number 5). The gum claims to have longer-lasting flavor and "sensations you can feel as you chew."

This morning Mars Inc — makers of M&Ms, Snickers, Skittles, and more — announced that it would buy gum manufacturer Wrigley for $23 billion. If you recall, the Wrigley company recently announced new packaging and flavors, in order to help sluggish gum sales.
The deal will create the world's largest confectionary company, and could possibly force Hershey's and Cadbury to join forces — there's been previous rumors of these two combining in the past.

It's commonly thought that people turn to chocolate when times are stressful, and now the candy industry has proof that this is true.
As the recession has sunk deeper, consumers have turned to chocolate for consolation: Confectionery giant Cadbury has reported a 30 percent increase in its annual profits. According to Todd Stitzer, the company's CEO, the industry has benefited from the fact that more people have been eschewing going out in favor of spending more time at home.

We all know Wrigley's makes gum and Tiffany sells jewelry, but those brands didn't get going by selling their signature products. Many companies, including these two, started in markets much different from where they ended up. A little trial and error never hurt an entrepreneur; in fact, I'm pretty sure it almost always helps.
