You're asking and I'm answering.
Dear Fit,
Last weekend after a night of camping, I was washing my hair and realized there was something stuck to my scalp. My husband took a look and found a small black tick embedded in my skin.

Exercising in the woods is perfect in the Summer because the challenging terrain offers you a tough workout, but the trees provide shade to prevent overheating. When on the trail you need not only to watch out for poison ivy, but be on the lookout for ticks as well. These little buggers are small, but their bites have the ability to transmit diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, Lyme disease, and other tick-borne illnesses.

As a kid, I remember I got a tick on the back of my neck. My mother called the doctor frantically because she thought I'd get Lyme disease. We found out from this experience, that if you notice you have a tick or that you've been bitten, it doesn't automatically mean you have Lyme disease.

Lyme Disease Rates Double in Past 15 Years
The annual number of people newly infected with Lyme disease has doubled from around 10,000 cases per year in the early 1990s to about 20,000 cases per year now. Improved diagnosis and reporting probably contribute to this increase. In the United States, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania have reported the highest number of Lyme disease cases in recent years.

It's definitely flea and tick season, and I wanted to share a special tip for all you kitty owners – or those that have cats and dogs in your furry fam! Although some solutions are meant for both, never use one made just for dogs on cats as it can contain an ingredient that's fatal to felines. If your meds include Permethrin, keep them far out of kitty's reach!
