Geeky confession time: when I was a kid I was mildly obsessed with Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Every year I would set my alarm clock to ensure that I wouldn't miss a single minute of the floats and balloons. As the years went by, I continued to keep my Thanksgiving tradition, even when my parents and siblings opted to sleep in rather than see some teeny boppers lip sync as their floats navigated the streets of New York.

Thanksgiving is a busy day in every household and coming up with ways to entertain the children can require more energy than a cooking mama or papa has on reserve. Planning a simple arts and crafts project and setting up a table for scribbling, decorating and family bonding time will keep the tots occupied while the grown-ups cook, watch football, sip a glass of vino and prepare the big meal. Check out some of our favorite projects for a little artistic inspiration.

Now, it's hard to not want to cave in to the curiously wriggling nose as you cook up a turkey — even though treats like a small bit of white meat are OK, shy away from feeding them turkey skins, gravy or fatty parts of the bird. Not only can it be dangerous for their weight, but it can contribute to pancreatitis, a serious gland inflammation that requires a vet visit ASAP.
As it turns out the little pancreas produces the digestive enzymes that break down food to let their furry bodies digest it.

A couple of years ago, I spent Thanksgiving at a friend's house. Everything was great, her mother had worked all day to make the perfect Thanksgiving dinner, turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, homemade biscuits, and all the other classics.

Regardless of whether or not you stuff your turkey, it simply wouldn't be Thanksgiving without stuffing — er, I mean, dressing. Change things up and take a tip from denizens of the Deep South and Carolina low country: make rice the star of the dish. Not only is whole-grain rice healthier and gluten-free, but cooking up a pot of rice is less work than cubing pieces of day-old bread.
