On Monday the The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act was signed into a law, which is great news for lungs everywhere. So why is the word "family" in the name of the law? This piece of legislation gives the FDA authority to ban tobacco products that appeal to first-time smokers (who are primarily children), like candy-flavored cigarettes.

A fellow FitSugar reader is in need of your sensible, yet sensitive advice. She told me about her sticky situation, so let her know what you'd do.
Dear Fit,
I've been with the same guy for over five years, and we have a wedding planned for late this Summer.

The American Medical Association wants Hollywood to stop featuring smoking on the big screen. They say movies that depict images of smoking cause young people to start smoking.
The entertainment industry has stripped dangerous behavior of its consequences before.

A US appeals court upheld a 2006 ruling today saying that cigarette makers lied about the risk of smoking and could no longer use the labels "low tar" and "light." In addition, the ruling found cigarette companies like Philip Morris guilty of racketeering and fraud.
Most of us don't need the court system to tell us that cigarettes are unhealthy and potentially deadly, but even in health-obsessed San Francisco, I see young women lighting up all the time (outside, of course).

Smoking is one of the worst habits you can take up since it's linked to all sorts of health risks such as lung cancer, emphysema, and cardiovascular disease. That's a pretty convincing list to make anyone quit (or never start), but a recent study suggests one surprisingly good thing could come out of smoking — prevention of certain types of allergies.
Smoking cigarettes decreases the body's allergic response by obstructing the activity of mast cells (cells that contain histamine).

I've been seeing a guy for a little more than a month and we're pretty crazy about each other. Everything is going great, but he smokes every once in a while and he thinks I don't know about it. Even though he tries to hide it, I can smell it and I can't stand it.

DrSugar is in the house and he's answering your health questions.
Dear DrSugar,
I have been smoking ever since college, which I know is dumb, but I just haven't been able to cut the habit. I started smoking only at parties, but now I'm at about a half pack a day for the last few years.

I'm one of those people who is easily moved to tears, and being both a health fanatic and a mom, this commercial about quitting cigarettes really tugged at my heart strings. I happen to think it's a really effective commercial, but what's your opinion? Do you think it would inspire someone to quit smoking?

Yesterday anyone who bought a pack of smokes found their wallet a little lighter. The federal tax on cigarettes jumped 62 cents, the largest tobacco tax increase in history.
Smoking is proving to be a pricey habit, especially in places like New York City.
