If you're thinking about grilling this week or have a freezer packed with convenience foods, check your meat. Gourmet Boutique, a food company based in Queens, NY, is recalling 286,000 pounds of meat and poultry. The recall is voluntary and includes more than 30 types of fresh and frozen products produced by the company, which may be contaminated with the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes.

The Rochester Meat Company of Minnesota has voluntarily recalled 188,000 pounds of ground-beef patties and other meat products because of an E. coli scare. Six illnesses were reported, one in California and five in Wisconsin.

Originally only 332,000 lbs of meat were recalled, but on Saturday, the Topps Meat Co. expanded its recall to include 21.7 million lbs of ground beef that may also be contaminated with e.

Last week over 21 million pounds of frozen hamburger were recalled due to an E. coli contamination.

Listen up! The first ground beef recall of 2008 has arrived. The Rochester Meat Company of Rochester, Minn., has voluntarily recalled over 180,000 lbs.

Yesterday, Dunkin' Donuts temporarily pulled its Dunkaccino and hot chocolate drinks off store menus after discovering that one of its suppliers' facilities may have been contaminated with salmonella. The doughnut chain's supplier, Plainview Milk Products Cooperative, voluntarily recalled several of its products, although no illnesses have been traced back to the contamination. Dunkin' Donuts is confident the drinks will be back in stores soon, but yesterday's recall is simply one more to add to a rapidly growing list of food contamination concerns.

Enough is enough, the White House has declared: Yesterday, a food safety working group established by Barack Obama announced new standards in the production of foods such as eggs, poultry, beef, leafy greens, melons, and tomatoes.
In the last year, members of virtually every food group — from spinach, jalapeños, milk, and peanut butter to cookie dough, beef, and now dry milk — have been recalled due to possible salmonella or E. coli contamination.

With the amount of food recalls seeming to grown annually, it is easy to feel that our food system in the US is broken, and after watching the 94 minute documentary Food, Inc., you learn that it truly is.
From the opening shots of the supermarket, we begin to learn how corn and the fast food industry have changed the way Americans both grow and eat food. While the movie repeats many of the facts from Michael Pollan's informative book, In Defense of Food, the facts are just as interesting the second time around.

Sorry to spread the bad news, but we have yet another recall to deal with. Whole Foods voluntarily recalled more than 1.2 million pounds of ground beef that has come from Coleman Natural Beef's Nebraska Beef processing plant. It pains me to say it but E.

I don't eat red meat all that often, but all these beef recalls make me scared to eat it at all. As consumers, we have the right to know what's causing these thousands of pounds of beef to be contaminated with E. coli bacteria.
