It's hard not to like a supermarket that has its own stack of Jelly Belly bins. Ralph's (operated by Kroger) has some issues with organization that can be a little frustrating, but my local store is always clean and you can count on stocked shelves. Can you guess what I spent on some items during a recent shopping trip?

We all crave junk food every once in a while, but there are healthy substitutions out there. If you crave Spicy Nacho Doritios you should give the South of the Border Pistachios by Everybody's Nuts a try.
The flavor of these pistachios is as satisfying as the Doritos, but the nuts are so much healthier than corn chips, and nuts don't leave a neon coating on your fingers either.

Some businesses are preparing for the arrival of rebate checks and are beginning to announce the predictable practice of offering bonuses for spending your rebate check on their goods. This week Sears and Kroger kicked off the emerging trend, and it would hardly be surprising if more retailers adopted the idea in the weeks leading up to rebate check deliveries.
If you bring your check to a Sears cash register, they'll convert it to a gift card and serve up an additional card worth 10 percent of your rebate check.

While several retailers have been offering what they call bonuses for spending your entire check either exclusively at their stores or promoting special deals during the time Americans are receiving their checks, some of their competitors are criticizing them for encouraging irresponsible behavior. According to the New York Times, stores like Sears, Supervalu, and Kroger's are offering shoppers a 10 percent bonus if they buy a gift card with their checks and Domino's is offering a “recession-busting” special of three pizzas for $12, while Home Depot is encouraging customers to buy energy-efficient products to save money.
The Times points out that the disapproving companies are concerned with the oxymoronic nature of these marketing campaigns that encourage a "spend money to save money" mentality.

When the bisphenol-A warning came out earlier this year cautioning the use of certain brands of baby bottles, I cleared out my cupboard.
Now, a research organization, the Environmental Working Group, insists that low doses of BSA can pose a risk to children and questions whether infant formula sold in cans lined with BSA (to protect the formula from the metal can) are safe.
EWG's website lists four major brands — Nestlé, Similac, Enfamil and PBM (who make store-brand formulas for WalMart, Target, Kroger and other retailers) as makers who use PBA in the linings of their liquid formula cans.
