The Taboo of Feeding Kids Junk Food

In the '70s and '80s, Spaghetti-Os, Twinkies, cheese in a can, and sugared cereals were tossed into many shopping carts due to convenience. But now, many of the mamas who grew up sipping soda are leading the no-juice campaign.

Women who might have licked cheddar powder off their Cheetos-stained fingers in their youth now choose more nutritious foods for their offspring. When the playground picnic table is piled high with a potluck of sandwiches on whole grain bread, fresh fruit, yogurt, and homemade baked goods, is there a stigma attached to the parent who ponies up a box of Krispy Kremes? A collective eye roll is what one doughnut-bearing mother I know received. I've since heard of moms sneaking their children sips of Sprite in restaurants and nibbles of candy bars behind closed doors to avoid being ostracized.

For the Hollywood celebmamas who don't hide their lil one's junk food indulgences from the paparazzi – think the Jolie-Pitt clan carrying chip bags in New Orleans and the rumor about the Spears-Federline boys drinking Coca-Cola in their bottles – headlines about poor eating accompanied the photos. Does a picture of a child eating from a shiny snack bag really mean that they've never downed a well-balanced meal, or has the movement toward healthy eating gotten a bit ridiculous? What's your opinion?

Bauer-Griffin

Dream Wedding Cake: A 42-Pound Cheeseburger

As a savory food lover and a fan of people with a good sense of humor, I love this story. Tom and Kerry Watts of Norwich, CT both love burgers and decided that substituting a 42-pound cheeseburger (the equivalent of 100 quarter pounders) for a wedding cake was the way to go. Tom, a firefighter, said of their unusual choice: "Not only did I get to marry the woman of my dreams but I also got to have the burger of my dreams in the same day." Love it!
Trendtotting: Gear Up for Game Day with Junk Food!

Die-hard football fans are rejoicing across the nation. 'Tis the season for tailgating, brat cooking, and pig skin loving. As is often the case, many parents will outfit their wee ones in their team's gear hoping to pass on the team pride from generation to generation.

Rather than sporting a brand spanking new jersey with "Brady" or "Manning" on the back, go old school and spoil your tot with a retro style Junk Food tee ($27) from Gap Kids that feels just as soft as a 20-year-old t-shirt would.

Would You Eat These Soda-Flavored Doughnuts?

Last time I went to the store, I spotted these doughnuts in flavors such as Hawaiian Punch, Orange Crush, and Dr Pepper. At first, I was curious and somewhat puzzled: Why would anyone think to pair soda flavors with doughnuts?

Ultimately I'm not sure what to think of this concept; I'm inclined to believe that food and beverage companies are running out of novelty ideas. Have you ever come across these doughnuts?

Another Reason to Avoid Processed Foods: The Environment

I am not a fan of processed foods. Although I am not always successful I do try to avoid food with ingredients that I don't recognize and cannot pronounce.

I now have another motivation to steer clear of packaged, processed and engineered foods – the environment. It is fairly simple, processed foods require more energy to produce and package than do whole foods like oats, bananas and spinach. While reading In Defense of Food, I realized that my favorite cereal, Kashi Go Lean is a lot more processed than simple steel cut oats. The production of food and the supply chain takes up an estimated 19 percent of energy used in the US, and the energy sources used are most often non-renewable energy sources. By decreasing the amount of processed foods as well as eating a diet that contains less meat, you can decrease your carbon footprint as well as your waistline. What processed food do you think you should give up? Tell me in the comments section below.

Do You Eat Junk Food?

I consider junk food anything that is processed, from a fast food joint, or unhealthy. However, it can be extremely tasty. To test your knowledge on junk food, I've described popular items and you have to identify them. Ready, set go!

Though the lyric demands peanuts and Cracker Jacks, which one would you pick if forced to choose?

Let's Dish: What Are Your Guilty Pleasure Foods?

Whenever I interview chefs, I always ask: "What's your favorite guilty pleasure food?" Of course, my definition of "guilty pleasure" is quite different from, say, FitSugar's. I don't consider it a guilty pleasure if it's high in fat or calories; that is a mere pleasure.

No, I'm talking about the food that you don't want your foodie friends to know you eat, whether it's Totino's frozen pizza rolls or "cappuccino" from 7-Eleven. Obviously, I make no secret of the fact that I'll eat pretty much anything, so now it's time for you to 'fess up. What foods do you secretly adore?
