A lot of us run in one direction for 15 minutes then turn around and run back for the remaining 15 minutes. For those of us who live in windy places, this means that half of our runs are done into the wind and the other half are done with the wind at our back.
When it's especially cold outside you need to protect yourself from the elements, so start your outdoor jogs by heading into the wind on the first leg.

Hi Fit,
I recently started running outdoors and am really enjoying it. It's started to cool off, and breathing in the cold air really burns my throat and lungs when I jog. Is there anything that can be done to prevent this?

I don't know about you but working out in the cold can sometimes be uncomfortable because it makes my muscles extra tight. What helps me is to warm up inside before heading out into the chilly weather.
Before a run or bike ride, I do about 5-10 minutes of light cardio inside.

For many people, kicking back and relaxing means kicking back with a cold one, and a regular 12-ounce beer contains around 150 calories. If you're worried about what that beer will do to your waistline, here are some summery ways to work it off.
All calculations are based on a 130-pound woman.

Most of us covered in cold and snow are forced to move our runs inside. If you don't have access to an indoor track, then a treadmill is the next best thing. While I'm grateful that this machine allows me to keep up with my runs, the repetition of staying in one spot can be beyond boring.

Drug Approval
In 2007, the FDA approved a new type of high blood pressure drug. Aliskiren (Tekturna) blocks renin, a kidney enzyme that is associated with blood pressure regulation. Aliskiren can be taken alone or in combination with other blood pressure drugs, but it should not be used during pregnancy.

You try to eat organic, but do you dress organic? Organic cotton is becoming increasingly popular among eco-minded types, since it's grown without the
large amounts of pesticides that bathe conventional cotton — about 1/3 of a pound of chemicals per one cotton t-shirt! Organic cotton is better for the environment and our health.

Pain Medications
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and COX-2 inhibitors work equally well for pain management, but both types of drugs increase the risk for heart attacks, according to an important report from the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research.
- The prescription NSAID diclofenac (Voltaren, Cataflam) may present a higher risk for heart attack than other NSAIDs, suggests a 2006 Journal of the American Medical Association study.
- Standard osteoarthritis medications provide moderate pain relief for only 2 - 3 weeks, suggests a 2007 review in the European Journal of Pain.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture may be helpful for people with knee and hip osteoarthritis, according to several 2006 studies:
- An Annals of Internal Medicine study of 1,007 people with chronic osteoarthritis knee pain indicated that patients who received acupuncture plus standard care had greater improvement than those who received only physical therapy and anti-inflammatory drugs.
- An Arthritis and Rheumatism study of 3,663 patients with chronic osteoarthritis knee or hip pain suggested that acupuncture plus routine care can provide significant improvements in pain relief and quality of life. In both studies, the benefits of acupuncture were sustained for up to 6 months after treatment completion.
Exercise and Knee Osteoarthritis
Weight-bearing exercise (walking, jogging) neither prevents nor increases the risk of knee osteoarthritis in healthy middle-aged and elderly people, suggests a 2007 study in Arthritis and Rheumatism.

When you love to run and daylight is limited, you might feel a little pinched for time. One way people save time is skipping the cool down since it is cold outside anyway. I am here to remind you that no matter the length of your run you need to cool down.
