Every Fourth of July, I make the ultimate burger. This year I slathered my burger with homemade mustard and ketchup and covered it with a crunchy jicama slaw. If you are not keen on coleslaw as a condiment, it's also a refreshing and crunchy side dish for hot Summer days.

For me, the word snack is synonymous with crunch. I find snacks more satisfying if they have some snap to them. Needless to say I am a chip lover, but they are not the most nutritious food on the planet and can be rather fattening too.

Thanks everyone for participating in the Secret Ingredient group. There were many great entries and once again I had a difficult time deciding (really, it's so hard!). However in the end I've decided that the Jicama Salad posted by Crispet1 is my number one choice.

I prefer to make homemade dressings and vinaigrettes because it allows me to control the quality of the ingredients. In this scrumptious dinner, the ingredients are tossed lightly with a blitzed mixture of ginger, mustard, and vinegar. With the help of a food processor, blender, or immersion blender, making a dressing only takes minutes.

This week got off to the right start as we celebrated our nation's star-studded birthday with crab cakes, jicama coleslaw, and elderflower cocktails.
Later, we paid homage to fried chicken, enjoyed the fruits of our labor in a peach taste test, and used leftovers to make a surprisingly delicious pizza.
Were you around for it all this week?

When my friends and I go camping, the food planning comes first. Once we've figured out who's making every appetizer, cocktail, main dish, and dessert, we focus on other details like who's bringing bug spray and how to get where we're going.
So for this week's campfire fiesta, I'm forgoing invitations in favor of a flurry of emails to work out the logistics.

Taking basic salad greens and loading them with extra veggies is a great way to increase your intake of nutrient rich fruits and veggies. The only problem with this plan is that we can easily end up in a salad rut. I asked you all to pimp my salad and the combinations you came up with sound amazing.

A few weeks ago YumSugar and I were lucky enough to speak with Food Network's newest star, the Latino sensation Ingrid Hoffmann. Born in Colombia and based out of Miami, Hoffmann is the Shakira of the culinary world — she's the first Spanish speaking celebrity chef to make the cross over and currently she has shows on both Food Network and Univision — making her the first person to have shows aired in both English and Spanish.
Like a breath of breezy ocean air, Ingrid is personable, likable, and ready to party.
