The US women's gymnastics team pointed to stadium officials when explaining their disappointing silver medal finish in the team competition. US coach Marta Karolyi blamed the Beijing stadium officials for disrupting Alicia Sacramone's preparation for the beam. Karoyli said: "First they called her name up, then they did not even put her name up even though the Chinese had finished .

After tonight's opening ceremonies for the Olympics, the competition starts almost immediately and gymnastics are no exception. The men's qualifying rounds start Saturday, and unfortunately Morgan Hamm will not be competing. Yesterday he joined his twin Paul, a gold medalist in 2004 games, on the injured list and is out due to an ankle injury.

With the Summer games less than a week away and gymnastics on the top of my list of sports to watch, I was looking forward to reading Chalked Up by 1986 US Gymnastic Champion Jennifer Sey. Her memoir of the US gymnastic scene in the 80s is truly a page turner. This coming of age story is as much about the sport as Sey's overachieving, fiercely competitive personality.

Women's gymnastics really seems like a sport for girls. While there were some older competitors, like Alicia Sacramone of the US and China's Cheng Fei who are both 20, it seems a sport loaded with youngsters. So what happens to these women, or girls, after competing at the top?

Last night seemed like a redemption match, gymnastics styles. The top three were all amazing, but Nastia Liukin was the best in the all-around competition. She gracefully stepped out from behind Shawn Johnson's athletic shadow and was lovely on the beam as well as the other three elements: uneven bars, floor, and vault.

In a close competition, every detail falls under scrutiny.
The US women's gymnastic team, older and wiser than the gold-winning Chinese team, performed well minus a couple of falls and landed in second place. The 20-year-old team captain Alicia Sacramone, who unfortunately fell during both her floor routine as well as her balance beam exercise, tried to keep a positive attitude about winning silver as did her teammate Nastia Liukin.

In case you missed it, the Olympic games open this Friday, and I am awfully excited to watch. Gymnastics tops my list of events to see, and Shawn Johnson is the gymnast to watch. Not only did she just win a Teen Choice Award for Choice Female Athlete, she also won the women's all-around title in the 2007 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.

On the Today show this morning, Matt Lauer and Al Roker performed a men's tandem rhythmic gymnastics routine to the tune of "Dream Weaver." (Note: Men's tandem rhythmic gymnastics is not an actual sport — yet.) The parody was meant to be funny, and their earnest expressions kinda crack me up . .

I'm a freak magnet when I leave the house, but rarely are the freaks I attract as entertaining as this guy. Dressed in a lovely periwinkle leotard with a straggly blond wig on his head, this street gymnast slaps some chalk on his hands and does his thang on public transit, in the town square, and down stair railings. (You might want to keep your feet to yourself, though, buddy.)
