Fit Tip: Use a Good Mood to Your Advantage

Many times a bad mood can put us off from going to the gym. But for me, it's my good moods that often keep me from doing my workout.

If I've had a great day at work then I want to go out and have a drink with a pal, or go home and spend time with my husband, not go to the gym. On the other hand, I have found that if I put my positive energy to work at the gym, I can really challenge my exercises and have a great workout. What's more? After I am done, my good mood in combination with the fact that I've just worked out can leave me on cloud nine for the rest of the day.

So I know it's tempting to celebrate a good day or a good mood with happy hour, just hit the gym first then meet your pals after. You'll be glad you did.

Locker Room Beauty Fixes in a Flash

I often love the way I look after a nice hard workout. The problem is that when I am working out at lunch, the "I've just sweat buckets" look doesn't always mesh with a post workout meeting with my boss.

Fitness Magazine consulted with workout diva Denise Austin on her own personal locker room beauty tips that make going from sweaty to sweet in minutes. Here are highlights:

Problem: Ponytail Crease
Fix: To prevent a ridge from forming mid-length, pull hair into a high ponytail and secure with a fabric holder instead of a tight elastic. "When you take hair down, it'll have extra volume," says Austin.

Problem: Flaky Skin
Fix: Avoid deodorant soap during your post-workout shower. Opt for a gentle body wash or simply rinse with water.

There are more easy tips so

Checking your BlackBerry or text messaging, on the other hand, is not nearly as distracting for the other gym goers, but it could spoil the relaxing part out of going to the gym for you.

It's not abnormal, Medical News Today reported that one in 10 people who head to the gym check their phones and email and text while working out. I'll admit it, sometimes I'll take my BlackBerry with me on the treadmill if I am waiting for an important email. Naturally I am curious about you, do you email and/or text while at the gym?

In the Future, Gyms Will Float

The idea of harnessing the energy output of exercisers to create usable power from burnt calories fascinates me, like using an indoor bike trainer to charge a battery. When I saw images of the River Gym, a human-powered commuter ferry powered by gym users, I was mesmerized.

Architect Mitchell Joachim teamed up with personal trainer Douglas Joachim to create the Human Powered Floating Gym. Although this concept was created for the waters around the isle of Manhattan, I think a floating gym could work on any body of water. Designed with a specific 15-minute looping path, each floating gym pod moves gym members to different destinations, creating a completely new form of mass transit. I would love it if my hour spin class could help power a trip across the San Francisco Bay. Sadly this design only came in third place in the 2005 Design a Gym contest sponsored by New York magazine, but that was before gas prices were in the four-dollar range. I am loving this idea and have hope that the gyms of the future will be able to capture our energy output and put it to good use.

For more images and the routes of the human-powered gym, visit Archinode.

Score Free Gym Passes

If your outdoor routine is getting cut short due to weather and air quality, or if you're just ready to take your fitness to a new level then you may want to think about joining a gym.

I know it sounds daunting, but there are a lot of gyms out there just dying to give you a free guest pass so you can try out their facilities. Gymticket.com has done the preliminary work for you so all you have to do is search for a nearby gym and show up. You can even print your free guest passes directly from the site, which means you'll avoid dealing with potentially pushy salespeople (at least in the beginning). So take your time and try out all the gyms near you until you find the one that you'll actually end up going to. You may even find that you actually enjoy going to the gym.

Fit Tip: Hit the Gym on Fridays

Thank goodness it's Friday! Why? Because in my opinion, Friday is a great day to head to the gym. Lately, I've become a big fan of hitting the cardio and weight machines after work at the end of every week, when the gym is virtually empty. The locker room isn't crowded, I never have to wait for a machine, and everything is nice and peaceful. I find that it's a perfect way to unwind after a long work week.

Of course, I also like going out on Fridays, but generally I find that no one wants to meet for dinner or drinks until after I'd be done working out anyway. So I use that downtime to squeeze in one last workout in a wonderfully unhectic gym.

Do you work out on Fridays? Do you like the gym at this time, or do you find it depressing?

5 Ways to Know You Need a New Trainer

A personal trainer can help you tremendously in your efforts in getting fit. Most trainers are with you 100 percent in that goal, but some can be lacking in their efforts. Trainers aren't cheap so here are a few tips that could be indicators that you may need to put your money (and time) towards another trainer:

She did not sit down with you to get your history. Trainers should sit down with their clients to get their health history as well as assess their fitness levels before having them do a single sit-up.

He does not pay attention while you're doing your exercises. A trainer is supposed to make sure you are doing the exercises properly so you can get the best workout. If your trainer takes the time to clean up the weight room, check her voice mail or gossip with another trainer while you're doing your sets then you may want to look for another trainer.

She has you doing the same stuff over and over again. This is why you hired a trainer in the first place, right? Your trainer should have you switching up your exercises. A little repetition is OK, but doing the same stuff over and over again is not.

There are a few more so

There are so many fitness centers nowadays, it seems you can't walk more than two blocks without seeing a sign for a one. There are chain gyms, privately owned gyms, and family-style gyms, where kids are invited too. So I was wondering . . .

Favorite Excuse For Not Working Out: I Hate the Gym

I hear this excuse all the time, "I just hate the gym." I can understand why some folks genuinely hate the gym and prefer to work out outdoors, but some folks just use hating the gym as an excuse to not exercise. If this sounds a bit like you then take a look at the positive with a few of my ways to learn to love the gym:

Pick a gym that is easily accessible. Nothing makes going to the gym harder than deadlock traffic. Plus, if it's easy to get to then you'll be less likely to use getting there as an excuse for not going.

Mother Nature doesn't matter. The gym offers an all-weather, year-round place to exercise. No more missing workouts because it's raining or snowing.

Listen during your tour of the gym and take them up on any freebies being offered. I hate not knowing where things are, too. Not only did I ask a lot of questions on my gym tour, I immediately signed up for my free personal training session and gained a wealth of information on the machines and how to use them, etc.

That's not all, so

Fit Tip: Go Easy on Monday

If your weekends do not consist of a normal exercise routine, the gym may seem very daunting on Mondays. For various reasons I failed to exercise last weekend, but I was determined to get back on track on Monday.

The problem was that the idea of spending a full hour at the gym seemed like a horrible idea after taking three days off. So instead of pushing myself to do it, I just had a light cardio day. Nothing crazy, pretty easy, but still got me moving. Come Tuesday, I was back in the swing of things. Had I have pushed myself too hard on Monday then I may not have even made it to the gym on Tuesday and my whole routine would have been screwed up. So if you find that you're not exercising on the weekends and having a hard time getting back into it on Mondays, make yourself do something, just go easy. It will make the transition from the weekend into your full blown workout schedule a lot easier.

Fit Tip: Use the Diagrams on the Machines

If you've never used a weight machine before, rather than mimicking the guy next to you or just guessing how to use it, look at the little diagrams provided on each machine. You may or may not know this but every machine states what it does and how you should use it. What's more? The diagram also shows you what muscles it targets. So take the time to read and learn the information provided to you before using an unknown machine. Even if you think you know what you are doing, it wouldn't hurt to double check yourself every once in a while.

A New Addition to Your Gym . . .

As health clubs across the nation are looking to expand their client base, you may be seeing something new at your gym: kids!

Yes that's right, while there are specially designed kid gyms, other gyms have started to open their doors to tots. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that more and more gyms nationwide are offering services to kids as well as adults. The average gyms, who formerly closed their doors to those under 13-years-old, are now offering everything from specific classes for children to carving out times to allow kids to use gym equipment (often during slow hours) and even work out with a personal trainer.

Though it does kind of sound like corporate America's version of the good old YMCA or community recreation center, doesn't it? I am guessing a family membership at the Sports Club/LA is way more pricey. Me, I like my adult time at the gym. I love my girls, but I love my hour of peace as well (as I am sure does every other parent there), plus I prefer them to exercise by running around the backyard and riding their bikes. I know you guys weren't too pleased about women bringing their babies to group classes so what you think about kids working out on the treadmill next to you?

Fit Tip: Stretch Between Strength-Training Sets

I'm always looking for ways to optimize my gym time, and lately I've come up with a clever tip I want to share. It forces you to rest between strength-training sets, and it cuts down on the time you spend on your cool-down stretches.

Here's how it works. Do your cardio before your strength training, but rather than stretching after the cardio, go straight into your weight routine. Then, use the time when you're resting between weight-lifting sets to do your stretching. For instance, while you're resting between bicep curls, you can stretch your quads, or when you take a break on the leg press, take a moment to stretch your deltoids.

Just make sure you only stretch the muscles you're done using; so don't stretch your triceps until you're done with your triceps extensions and dips, and so on. However, if you stretch as you go, it will really cut down on your cool down at the end of your gym session, and you can get out the door faster. Do any of you do this? If so, tell me about your routine below.

Source

Speak Up: Cell Phones at the Gym?

I have a love/hate relationship with my cell phone. The convenience of being able to place a call from anywhere is great, but being on the receiving end makes escaping from my various duties almost impossible. I do like that I can catch up with a friend who is miles away while I take my dog for a walk, but I could never imagine talking on cell phone at the gym. Many gyms ban them, but some don’t.

Opening up a discussion on cellphone use in general is like opening up Pandora’s box, but I want to know if you use your cell phone at the gym? When do you think it's OK to use your cell phone at the gym? Have you ever complained to the management about someone on an endless call on the elliptical next to you? Are you able to block out other’s cellphone conversations by cranking your headphones? Speak up and share your feelings, both pros and cons, in the comments section below.

Fit Tip: Ignore Everyone Else at the Gym

One excuse people often use for not going to the gym is that they are too worried about what everyone else is thinking, or that they don't like the "type of people" at the gym. I used to think that way when I was younger, but as I've gotten older, I simply don't care!

Here's a simple way to get more enjoyment out of your gym time: Just ignore everyone else! Pretend they're not even there. Most people at the gym are just concerned with themselves. Everyone has different ability levels and different reasons for going to the gym, so focus only on your own goals and motivation. You may not like all of the people you encounter there, but there is no rule that you have to interact with them.

So put on your headphones, or grab some other distraction, and don't worry about everyone else. If you're doing ab work or stretches, you can even just close your eyes. Think of it as your "me" time.

Do you ignore other people at the gym? If so, share your secrets in the comments.

Source

Speak Up: What's in Your Gym Bag?

When I go to the gym, I have to have my gym bag. Aside from the obvious gym essentials like sneakers, my workout clothes, and a yoga mat, I always keep extra Larabars in there, a bottle of water, tissues, tampons (hey, you've got to be prepared), lip balm, and hand sanitizer gel. It also has extra pairs of undies, a towel, my iPod and earphones, and a plastic bag to put my sweaty gym clothes in so they don't stink everything else up. Wow, I didn't realize my little bag had all that in it!

So tell me, besides the basics, what else do you keep in your gym bag?

Source

So I turned to my left and realized the person wasn't checking me out at all — she was looking at the readout on my machine. She felt really embarrassed, like a person who got caught stealing or something, but I just smiled knowing I do the same thing.

So I was wondering, do you glance over at the readout of the person next to you? Are you curious to know how fast he or she is going? Does looking at their readout inspire you to stay on the machine longer or move faster?

Fit Tip: Run With a Stranger at the Gym

When I step onto a treadmill at the gym, some days I'm just not feeling very motivated to push myself. I'm sure this happens to you too, so you should give this little game a try.

Find someone on a treadmill that looks like they're working hard and pretend you're running with them. It's great inspiration to feed off their fire, and you'll be surprised at how suddenly you have a burst of energy. I find that I can run longer or faster when I'm mock running with someone else.

This of course works for any cardio machine, so the next time you're feeling sluggish, use someone else's drive and passion to pep you up.

Gym Bag Essential: Aquis Microfiber Towel

I recently purchased my own microfiber towel to carry around with me at the gym to wipe my body. I am in love with my new little towel because it's way softer than the ones provided at the gym, and I know where it's been.

This Aquis Adventure Small Microfiber Towel ($8.69) is lightweight and compact; making it ideal to stuff in your gym bag. Since it's microfiber, it also dries quickly between uses, avoiding any potential mildew smells. Buy it here.

Fittingly Mad: Sick People at the Gym

I go to the gym because it keeps me healthy. It strengthens my muscles, my heart, and my immune system. So I don't appreciate it when flu-infested Francine shows up and starts huffing and puffing on the treadmill next to me. I know that some people believe that exercising can help get rid of a cold faster, but there's a time and a place.

There usually isn't a whole lot of ventilation in the gym, and I don't need to be breathing in the germs you're trying to get rid of. I also don't want to touch anything you touched, and no — wiping the equipment down with your sweaty towel doesn't quite cut it. I especially don't appreciate you stuffing your used tissues in the drink holder (I seriously saw this the other day).

So do everyone a favor — if you're sick, stay away from the gym. If you're up for exercising, do a fitness DVD, some weight lifting at home, or go for a bike ride or jog outside. Then you can come back to the gym when you're germ-free.

5 Things: Ways to Hurt Yourself While Working Out

Regardless of whether you're a gym newbie or have been working out for years, there's a variety of common mistakes that can lead to injury. Nobody wants that right? Here are five ways to hurt yourself at the gym, with advice on how to stay injury free.

Skipping the warm up. Even if your schedule is tight, don't skimp on the very important warmup. Easing your way into your workout will gradually increase your heart rate and get the blood flowing into your muscles. Not only does it help make your body feel more prepared to work hard, but it can also prevent pulling a muscle.

<li style=width:550px;">Doing the same thing every time. While it's good to get into a routine, this is a great way to get a repetitive stress injury. So alternate between cardio machines, try out different fitness classes and weight machines, and work on cross-training. Not only will you help give overused muscles a break, but you'll have more fun working out too.

Want to see the rest? Then

How Much Is the Monthly Fee for Your Gym?

Whether you sign up because of snow or you're preparing for swimsuit season, gym memberships aren't cheap. The lowest cost out there seems to be $49 a month, and if you are looking for a gym with a pool, you are going to pay more. Not to mention the sign up fee!

Fit Tip: Don't Be Shy, Ask For Help

Working out at a gym can be a little intimidating with so many different types of equipment to choose from, ranging from the cardio craziness of the StepMill to the medieval-looking cable pulley machine. One would be hard pressed to be an expert on using them all. So don't feel like you need to be! You can always ask for some help.

It just doesn't pay to be shy. If you are interested in trying a new piece of equipment, ask someone who works at the gym to show you the ropes, or the "pulleys" for that matter. Not only will you be trying new things, which is always a great idea, but your chances of hurting yourself will decrease if you know how to work the equipment. Talk to the instructor after a group class if you have questions about your form or are looking for ways to modify an exercise. To get into the nitty gritty of your fitness life, it might be a good idea to have a session with a personal trainer.

Other gym members will likely help you out too. Some people really like to talk form and will be happy to spot or assist you. You'll not only become more fitness savvy, but connecting with your gym community will also motivate you to go.

Do You Use Your Gym Towel as a Barrier?

I know a towel is not god's gift to avoiding germs, but the greater the barrier between myself and the shared gym equipment I'm using, the better. Sometimes I notice others using a towel as a barrier, and then sometimes I see folks laying straight on the mat with just a sports bra. So what about you . . .

5 Things: Avoid Getting Sick at the Gym

Getting weekly exercise is a great way to strengthen your immune system and benefit your overall health, but working out at a gym can be like walking into a germ factory. You're working out and breathing hard so closely to others, sharing air, equipment, and probably coming in contact with their sweat and bacteria. Here are a few tips on how to avoid germs at the gym.

Wash your hands once you get to the gym (it's a good habit to get into during this cold and flu season). Also wash your hands after using equipment. You may want to invest in some anti-bacterial gel or wipes to clean your hands and any equipment you're about to use.

Avoid wiping sweat off your face with your hands. Bring along a clean towel instead. You can use the towels provided by your gym, or if you are a super germ-a-phobe, you can always bring your own.

Wear clean, dry clothes ever time you go to the gym. Even though your gym clothes may seem clean, bacteria and germs may be lurking from your previous workout. Once your workout is complete, get out of those sweaty clothes and take a shower to wash away sweat, bacteria, and germs before they have a chance to make you sick. If you don't have time, at least wash your hands and face thoroughly.

Want to the the others? Then

Fit Tip: Don't Lose Your Lock

I used to forget my combination lock frequently when I went to the gym, and it drove me nuts. I'd have to either lug my bag around while I worked out or pay for one of the coin lockers. But, if you're frequently changing bags — maybe using a gym bag some days or just throwing your stuff into your purse another day — a lock is an easy thing to forget or, even worse, lose.

So I came up with a simple solution: I always kept my combination lock inside the toe of one of my running shoes. That way, even if I'm using a new bag or traveling or visiting a friend's gym, I always have my lock with my shoes. Of course, there is always the possibility that I could forget my shoes, too, but then I wouldn't be able to work out anyway! Do you have a trick for keeping up with your gym lock? If so, please share in the comments.

24 Hour Best 2007

Whether it is a boutique gym or hotel gym, we all have our favorite gyms to head to.

You guys voted 24 Hour Fitness as the best gym of 2007. The YMCA was right up there, so it really was the battle of the large corporate gym versus the small community gym. 24 Hour is appealing due to its hours of operation and number of clubs nationwide, while the Y is kid friendly and cost effective.

Furthermore, since it was impossible to have every small gym in every small town across America, I couldn't have them as options but most of you nominated your own local gym as the best gym of 2007. Regardless of where you go, or if you even go to a gym, exercise is the key here so congrats to anyone who exercises at a gym or not.

We can run outside, use cardio machines, take dance classes, lift weights, learn Kung Fu, and use fitness DVDs.
Tips on Choosing a Gym

Now that the weather is getting colder, it's harder to motivate to exercise outdoors. That's where the gym comes in. So many health clubs offer great new rates for the fall, so if you're looking to join, now is a great time. How do you choose a gym? These tips should help you.

Consider location. If it's more than a 10-minute walk or car ride from your home or office, chances are you'll be less motivated to go.

Cost is a big deal too. Call around to see what deals are being offered and what the price includes. You may have to pay extra for classes, parking, use of the pool or sauna, or for a consultation with a trainer. Monthly fees are usually around $25-75. Some gyms require you to pay a sign-up fee too.

Find out when the gym is open. If you can only go at 6 am, but the gym opens at 6:30, then that's not going to work. Check the weekend hours too, since some gyms close early on Sundays. Also, some gyms are open 24 hours a day, but you may be paying extra for that and it won't matter if you're never going to go past 10pm at night.

Figure out what you like to do, whether it be using the treadmill, swimming, lifting weights or taking classes. Go with the gym that has the most of what you like.

Want to hear the rest? Then

Fittingly Mad: The Gym is NOT a Bar

I'm annoyed. No, I'm pissed actually. I go to the gym to workout. I go during my lunch break, and I don't have a ton of time to dilly dally or lolly gag. When I go to the gym, I mean business, so excuse me if I don't have time to chit chat.

Well it's not that I don't want to make conversation or be social, I just cannot stand guys that try to pick girls up at the gym. I have been a "victim" a few times, and I have to say I'm slightly flattered, but mostly ticked off. Some guys are just such idiots. They see a woman in spandex, and they immediately think the woman wants to go on a date. News flash sweaty guys at the gym -- not all women want to be picked up. I may be wearing a sports bra, but last time I checked it didn't say "Please hit on me."

It actually makes me not that psyched to go to the gym, which is not cool at all. Exercising is such a huge part of my life. I need it for so many reasons, and I shouldn't be discouraged from going because of a few obnoxious guys. I don't want to seem like a b*tch when all I really want to do is workout and get out of there. Can any of you ladies relate?

There is something that makes me feel a little better. To find out what it is

What's the WORST Part About Going to the Gym

Having a gym membership can be great. There's tons of equipment you can use, a plethora of exercise classes, and some health clubs even have a sauna, a pool, or a hot tub.

Source

I usually try to go during my lunch hour at work so I do what I need to do, and get out of there fast. I try to go before the noon crowd hits, because I hate waiting for machines (I don't have much time). Even worse is waiting for the showers after the workout!

And for you...

As the months pass by, gyms get less and less busy as many gym warriors of the past start to lose steam. As we all know gym memberships don't come cheap so I am curious if you're getting your money's worth.

Victoria Beckham Hates the Gym Too!

After reading this quote from Posh herself, Victoria Beckham, I thought about all the Stars, They're Just Like Us features we see in glossy tabloids...

Here's more:

"I really don't like the gym, in fact I can't stand it," she says with a laugh. "Maybe it's the whole getting sweaty thing, but it's just not me. I tried cycling in Spain but maybe my bum's too small as it just wasn't comfortable. I want to get fit, though, so I'm exploring some different options. I like what I've heard about Pilates - just sitting in a room, stretching and breathing. Sounds much more civilized."

Could you imagine if Posh was on the reformer next to you, swearing her bloody head off because Pilates does, in fact, make you sweat? Hilarious.

Victoria is not, and never has any ambitions to be, Sporty Spice. Like the majority of us, she hates the gym and is looking for the easy way out. It just goes to show that while money can do a lot of things for you fitness wise (celeb trainers, ritzy gym memberships, sweet gear, etc), it can't do the work for you. Not even if you're Victoria Beckham.

Source

Fittingly Mad: Must You Bring your iPhone to the Gym?

So after seeing the results of the poll on whether or not you talk on the phone while exercising, I got a little fired up. Here's why...

I was at the gym the day following the poll and I was particularly sensitive to anyone talking on the phone, so you can imagine my disgust when not one, but three people were flashing their cell phones around the gym. They weren't just any cell phone users mind you, but only the most annoying of all phone users right now... They were iPhone users. I'm thinking, "Not only are you being rude by talking on the phone while others are just trying to workout in peace, but now I've got to deal with you flashing your phone around."

One guy, and I'm not kidding here, was talking on his iPhone while on a stationary recumbent bike. Guess what his entire 17 minute conversation was about? He talked about how he was at the gym on his iPhone and how cool it was and blah, blah, blah. I know this, because I was on the bike right next to him, fuming at his every word.

I'm happy for everyone that got an iPhone, I really am. In fact, I think they're pretty cool but they're not iGyms or iExercise or even iWorkout, which in my book means they're not meant for the gym and iThink you should leave it in your iLocker so iDon't throw it out the iWindow.

iThank you for listening!

How to Make Your Time Count at the Gym

Here are a few things to consider when trying to make the most of your gym time. Maximize your workout time with the following tips.

Avoid distractions. I hate to be a nag, but you will get more out of your workout if you avoid distractions like TV, magazines, and your gossiping gal pals (save that for the sauna) and focus on your workout. If you are bored with your current cardio routine, try some of these cardio workouts.

Sneak in some cardio. When weight training, get your heart going by running in place between sets. Or why not find a jump rope!!!

Do Multitasking moves. Challenge more than one body part at a time. Combine bicep curls with forward lunges. Add an overhead press to your squats.

Pay attention to traffic patterns. Ask the folks at the front desk for times when the gym is slow and schedule your workout for those periods.

Go in with a game plan. Figuring out your workout ahead of time will keep you from wandering around the gym aimlessly, wasting time.

Take it From Jennifer Garner: Use the Weight Machines

I am a big Jennifer Garner fan. Not only does she seem to be totally down to earth as a mom, she also has been slowly toning up (rather than the usual celeb disappearing act) after having that adorable baby of hers.

Looks like one way Jen gets those lovely arms, other than toting Violet around in her arms all day, is by using the weight machines at the gym. Weight machines, along with any other strength training methods, are a great way to tone up those arms. However, be sure you are getting the most out of it with these tips:

On machines that have multiple handles—such as the shoulder-press and row machines—alternate your grip between palms facing forward and palms facing each other.

Be sure you are using enough resistance. The machines tend to allow us to cheat due to their ease of down-shifting the resistance and the conspicuousness of it. Just like with free weights, you want to exhaust the muscles you are working in 10-12 reps.

Slow it down both ways. People tend to go too fast when bringing the machine to the return position and miss a good portion of their workout. So go slow during the entire movement to work opposing muscles as well as primary muscles.

Pay attention to proper form to avoid injury. Technique can usually be learned by simply reading the instructions on the machine or by having a trainer tell you how it works. Keep in mind that most of the time you want your knees, elbows, hips at 90 degree angles.

Been waiting a long time to use that Lat Pull-Down Machine? Ask the person hogging it if you can work in with her. This means that while she is resting in between sets, you do a set and then when you're resting in between sets, she does hers.

For more pics of Jen toning up with weight machines at the gym,

A lot of people wash their face prior to hitting the treadmill, but some people wait and wash their face after. I am personally terrified of breaking out, so I like to carry wipes with me and clean my face quickly first, but do the deep clean immediately after the workout.
Top Excuses for Holding onto The Treadmill

A day at the gym wouldn't be a day at the gym without seeing at least one person holding on for dear life while running on the treadmill. I'll never completely understand how (or why) people do it, but eDiets has come up with a list of excuses people use for holding on and how to stop doing it:

If you think: "I’ll fall off if I let go!"
Then: SLOW DOWN.

If you think: "My trainer says it’s OK." I once asked a trainer why he allowed his able-bodied client to hold on, despite three weeks of training. His response: "She’s scared."
Then: Beware of trainers who fail to empower you.

If you think: "I’ll lose my balance."
Then: Slow down and stop using your arms as anchors. Balancing is part of exercise.

If you think: "I’ve always done it this way."
Then: It’s never too late to break a sabotaging habit.

If you think: "My doctor told me to do it."
Then: Shame on him or her for not telling you that holding on increases blood pressure and causes poor posture.

If you think: "The machine keeps telling me to hold on for heart rate."
Then: Select another program. Hold on for heart rate, but then let go after the number appears!

If you think: "But I’m sweating!"
Then: Many variables affect sweat: room ventilation, weight, body chemistry, even mental state.

If you think: "I’m old!"
Then: If ever there were a reason NOT to hold on, this is it!

So break the habit -- Slow the treadmill down and work on form WITHOUT holding on before over exerting yourself and risking injury.

Source

Get Your Butt in Gear: Victoria's Secret Workout Pants

We all know Victoria's Secret makes some sexy lingerie, but they are now also making great yoga pants. I first learned about Victoria's Secret yoga line from team member CGW when she bookmarked a pair as a Fit Find. They have a ton of different styles and colors to choose from, and they're not at all over-priced.

Although they're labeled "yoga pants," they'd be great for any kind of exercise from walking, to jogging, to Pilates, to kick-boxing, to casual bike riding. Wear them to the gym, on a lazy Sunday, or to relax in at home - they'll add flexibility to your wardrobe. (ha - get it?)

I like the splash of color at the waistband of this Foldover Yoga Pant. They come in tons of color combinations like black/strawberry, fern green/spearmint, and midnight/seaside blue. Nowadays, everyone wears black pants, so it's nice to have something that's a little different and a little more colorful for spring.
