There's no shortage of annoying people at the gym — the dumbbell dropper, the cell phone talker — but sometimes the gym itself gets on my nerves. For instance, right now about 80 percent of the clocks where I work out are not working. How hard is it to reset a clock?

When I asked what fitness equipment intimidates you at the gym, many of you said "the weight machines." One reason is that big, strong, sweaty guys hang out there, and as FitSugar reader AZDaisy put it, it's "Man Land." I can relate to what laellavita said — "I would feel like a wimpy little girl amid all of the testosterone."

The gym is a shared space where we sweat, work hard and relax. There are some important spoken and unspoken rules when it comes to working out with others, so please keep these in mind the next time you go to work out. Some of these are FitSugar readers' ideas.

Lately I've been mixing up my cardio routine with the rowing machine, which has the advantage of often being open at the gym when the ellipticals and treadmills are taken. If you've never tried your hand at this old-school contraption, I highly recommend taking a seat and giving it a try.
A 130-pound woman can burn as many as 281 calories in 30 minutes on the rowing machine; calculate your own calorie burn here.

I'm happy with my gym, but I love sampling the services at other health clubs too, whether it's as a guest of a friend or with a free pass to a new place. I like comparing everything from group classes to locker rooms. How about you: Do you like to try out different gyms?

Call it weight-ing for the bus. In the Netherlands, a gym chain called Fitness First has installed a bus-stop ad complete with a bench that's been converted into a weight scale. Sit on the seat, and the digital readout displays your weight.

Since the New Year, my gym has been pretty packed. If I go during popular times of the day, before or after work, or lunchtime, I often have to wait until someone gets off the treadmill or elliptical in order to use it. When I finally do get on a machine, I hate that other people are standing around waiting for me to get off.

With the start of the new year, many of us returned to our gyms, or joined new ones, to commit to fitness for 2009. Choosing a gym can be complicated. You may have to settle for a gym because of price or location, which means it may not offer you everything your fitness heart desires.
