Over the next month Japanese firms will start performing "flab checks" on their employees over age 40. A health ministry led initiative is requiring firms to reduce the number of overweight employees and their families by 10 percent by 2012, and if they fall shy of that target the firms will be penalized.
"Flab checks" involve measuring the waistlines of about 56 million men and women to see if they're at risk of metabolic syndrome, and men "with girths of more than 85cm (33.5in) will be given exercise and diet plans and, in urgent cases, told to see a doctor."

The world experienced a global Gatorade shortage last week when presidential candidate Barack Obama got his sweat on for a total of 188 minutes, stopping by three separate gyms. Though he's a pretty religious worker-outer, usually with jogging companion, the aptly-named Reggie Love, the physical fitness triple threat left some wondering, "what the heck is he doing in there?"
Luckily, 23/6 has that base covered with their exclusive, step-by-step, illustrated workout, "Look like Barack Obama in only 188 minutes a day!"

Adding to the onslaught of employer efforts that promote a healthy workforce, an office furniture maker has begun churning out "Walkstations." The machines move slowly enough that workers can walk while completing computer work, and while two miles an hour seems like a piddly amount, proponents of the device say it's beneficial.
This is the latest development in a flurry of health related office changes: Some employers are banning their workers from smoking, Japan's employers have introduced flab checks, workers with bad health habits are increasingly being charged more for health insurance, and it's becoming more common for workers to undergo annual screenings to evaluate overall health.
