DVD Review: Bollywood Burn

If you loved The Bollywood Dance Workout DVD, here's another one from Indian dance diva Hemalayaa with a pop-culture bend to it titled Bollywood Burn ($15). This video has three different dance segments, so you can do all three at one time (42 minutes total), or just choose one or two dances if you're pressed for time.

I've got to say that when the DVD started, I felt a little silly doing the moves. Also, Hemalayaa kept laughing uncontrollably, which was a little weird, but I must say that this workout was intense. I swear that my thighs were burning the entire time from the squat pulsing, and my heart was pumping from all the hopping and knee lifts. I liked that she alternated between a few minutes of intense dancing and a couple minutes of stretching. This workout seemed like new-age aerobics, and since I have loved aerobics since the '90s, I really enjoyed this workout. Once I got into the Bollywood groove, I found that this DVD was a really fun way to tone my entire body, especially my shoulders, thighs, and bum. I bet this would be really amazing to do in a class with a live band. Well for now I'll stick to this DVD. If you're looking for a new way to exercise, burn calories, and feel the burn in your quads and hips, I'd definitely order Bollywood Burn.

To see a clip of this DVD

Get in Gear: Yakkay Bike Helmets

Many folks still, though it boggles my mind as to why, refuse to wear a helmet when biking. Some are worried about messing up their hair on not looking like a fashionista while wearing a helmet. As my mom, and former R.N., always said, "A helmet is a lot more fashionable than a halo brace." But I digress . . .

For those looking for a helmet that's a little cooler, and pricier, than your average helmet try on a Yakkay for size. These smart helmets are basically a very simple, but safe, helmet fitted with a cool hat-like cover. Unfortunately the helmets seem to be only available overseas at the moment, but you can order one online for about $177 (or 120 Euros) plus shipping. I'm loving them — but my Specialized helmet seems to be working just fine for me right now. Maybe when they make their way stateside I'll invest in one for my days when I am cruising around town rather than working to get my heart rate up. What do you think?

DrSugar Answers: Losing Too Much Weight Running?

DrSugar is in the house and answering your questions.

Dear DrSugar,
I have a problem that might seem a little odd, but I am not dieting and I am losing too much weight. I am training for a marathon, and exercise daily about 2 hours Monday through Friday (running outside mixed with swimming, spin class, body pump, and running on Treadmill). My Saturday workout is always a long run, and my Sunday workout is a short run. I know I am not pregnant, but my last period was 5 months ago. Is this due to too much exercise? Other than the missing period, I feel strong and fine. And I eat healthy meals every 2 to 3 hours. Is this something that I need to worry about?
Running Rita

This is an interesting multi-faceted question. DrSugar and I decided we should both tackle this one. To read what DrSugar has to say about this, just

What's the Deal With Kerri Walsh's Shoulder Tape?

Watching Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor kick some sand-covered butt has been a highlight of the Summer Olympics so far, and I'd love to see this dynamic duo go home with the gold. Meanwhile, I've been puzzling over the multicolored tape that Walsh has been wearing on her shoulder; sometimes it's black, sometimes it's blue, but clearly it's there for a reason.

I did a little research and discovered that this stuff is called Kinesio Tex Tape, and it's being used by a number of Olympians this year.

The therapeutic tape can be used for many different purposes, compressing muscles while allowing athletes to move freely. It helps relieve pain and also supports muscle and joint stability and performance. There are a number of different ways to apply it and use it, so you should do some research and/or talk to a professional before using Kinesio tape.

If you want to follow in Walsh's footsteps, you can buy a 2” x 16.4' roll of Kinesio Tex Gold Tape for $15. Better yet, until Aug. 31, you can get a deal: When you buy three or more rolls, you get one free — though the website warns that orders may be delayed due to increased demand from the Olympics!

If you've ever tried this stuff, I'd love to hear what you thought, so tell me below.

Fit Tip: Don't Forget About the Rest of Your Body

When I exercise, I tend to go through cycles where I throw myself into one kind of activity. Lately I'm into biking. I love how the breeze keeps me cool in the heat, and the intense burn in my thighs and booty lets me know I'm working hard. Even though it's great to fully involve yourself with one kind of exercise, you may end up working only part of your body and neglecting other parts. If this sounds familiar, here's a friendly reminder not to forget about the rest of your anatomy. If your legs are sculpted and strong but your core is flabby and weak, it could result in an injury. So think about the kind of exercise you do on a regular basis and incorporate new kinds of exercises into your routine to include the body parts you tend to forget. That way your total body will be strong and healthy.

Gear Review: Hyde Yoga Trieger Tank

When I practice Yoga, I like to keep the girls in place. You know when you're in Down Dog and you notice your chest is slowing falling out of your top. Then have to stop to fix your shirt every five minutes. It can really disrupt your concentration and flow. I was so happy when I found this Yoga Trieger Tank ($42) by Hyde.

The straight neckline ensures that everything stays in place. I also love the thicker straps, so you don't have to worry about them sliding off in your Sun Salutations. It has a shelf bra built in, and I love the unexpected V in the back. Another favorite thing is that this tank is long, so when you raise your arms in Tree pose, your bellybutton won't be peeking out to say hello. It's made with a 92 percent cotton/8 percent spandex blend, so this shirt is comfy and soft like your favorite pair of old PJs. I have it in orange, but it comes in tons of colors like chocolate, black, sky, and lilac. This has quickly become one of my favorite tops.

Strike a Yoga Pose: One-Legged Inverted Staff Pose

So many people I know are always complaining of lower back pain and tight shoulders from sitting all day. We're either standing or hunched over a desk and we hardly ever bend our backs in the opposite direction. So give this One-Legged Inverted Staff Pose a try. It's similar to the grounding backbend Inverted Staff pose, but you'll also feel this one in your hamstrings and hips.

Sanskrit Name: Eka Pada Viparita Dandasana
English Translation: One-Legged Inverted Staff Pose
Also Called: One-Legged Headstand Backbend

You can get into this pose from backbend or headstand. To find out how

Madonna: Fit and Fifty

Word on the street is that Madonna will be doing some double-Dutch jump-roping in her upcoming Sticky and Sweet tour. While all that jumping is a serious cardio workout, I am sure Madonna can handle it and then some. She's seriously fit and today she is turning 50! Happy birthday, Madge.

How exactly does this icon maintain her insane physique after five decades? She works plenty hard at it, that's how. Madonna said, "There are no tricks. Tricks don’t work. Discipline does." And she is one disciplined macrobiotic girl. Plus she knows what fitness tricks do work: she has a great fitness buddy Gwyneth Paltrow, she's got a tough trainer, and she mixes it up. Madge bikes and runs, as well as practices ashtanga yoga and Gyrotonic. She also conveniently has a gym in her home, or at least as close as the house next door that she converted to a gym.

Whether or not she is taking the health thing too far by <ahref="http://www.fitsugar.com/533424">injecting herself with vitamins, Madonna lives the healthy lifestyle most of the time.

I for one hope to be as fit as Madonna when I hit the mid century mark. What about you, does Madonna inspire you? Tell me in the comments section below.

Partner Yoga Pose: Supported Flying Arch

I'm all for stretches that increase flexibility in my spine, so if you're the same way, grab a friend and give this pose a try. Not only will you feel like you're weightless, but your partner on the floor will feel a nice release in her lower back.

Get Your Butt in Gear: Team Speedo USA Collection

Before we all came down with Michael Phelps fever, I told you about the Speedo LZR Racer, hailed as the world's fastest swimsuit. If you've been watching the Olympics, by now you are intimately familiar with the $550 full-body suit that all the swimmers are wearing.

If you want an LZR of your very own, you'll have to wait until October, but you can preorder one now on Speedo's website. The aquawoman one piece comes in three styles: the High Neck Bodyskin ($550), the Recordbreaker Kneeskin ($425), and Recordbreaker Bodyskin ($475). If only we could get a sassy stars and stripes version like Natalie Coughlin's.

Speedo also has a fun selection of other Team USA gear, most of which is a lot more colorful and a lot less serious. Even if you aren't a swimmer, wouldn't you love to get your butt into these USA Terry Shorts ($24)? Take a look at some of my favorite finds below.
Can't Do a Push-Up? Try This

A while ago, I told you about this great video showing what you can try if you don't have a treadmill but want to run indoors. The same guy who came up with that brilliant idea also came up with a way to work your upper body even if you can't quite do a push-up. Check out this video showing how to get some assistance with your push-up.

Do you think you'd ever try this? Tell me in the comment section below.

Crave Worthy: Golf and Tennis Wear by Stella McCartney

Stella McCartney paired up with Adidas a few years back, and her feminine yet sporty clothes do not disappoint. The design are always fresh and lovely, not to mention expensive, but a girl can dream can't she. Her Fall sports collection includes dance and ski wear, but it is the golf and tennis outfits that really inspire.

New York magazine recently shared a few sneak peeks at these new designs.
I, for one, would love to hit the links in these clothes. I know they wouldn't help my game, but at least I would lose fashionably.

To see the tennis fashions,

Running Tip: Skip When You Have the Urge to Walk

I have long suspected, but now it has been proven that running can lengthen your life. Have you started running yet? If you're a newbie runner, let me warn you it takes time to build up your endurance to 20-30 minutes straight. So the next time you go out for a jog, try this trick. Whenever you get the urge to stop and walk, try skipping instead. Skip for a minute or two, and either return to running or walk for a few minutes if you still feel the need for break. Skipping will keep your heart rate elevated, and you'll burn more calories than you would if you were walking. Even Madonna skips while working out. Plus it's a fun way to mix up your workout so you don't get bored. Do be prepared for some funny looks. But ignore them because skipping is fun.

What's the Deal With: BodyCircles

I spend a lot of time strength training my upper body, but I'm so used to using dumbbells and doing push-ups, that I'm always looking for new ways to target my arms. Not only does it make my workouts more exciting, but it strengthens the muscles in my arms in a different way, which is great for preventing injury.

I'm not sure if you've ever tried these BodyCircles (on sale for $10), but you may want to pick some up if you're looking to isolate and tone the muscles in your upper body. These circles are padded and even though they don't look like much, they really do a beautiful job of targeting your biceps, triceps, shoulders, and upper back. Essentially they are like hula hoops for your arms. Spinning those circles forwards as well as backwards requires some coordination, but will build some strength and bring on the burn. There's a 14-minute instructional DVD included so you can learn how to strengthen your arms in just eight minutes. For under $10, it's quite a deal.

Speak Up: What's Your Favorite Way to Exercise?

Exercise comes in all shapes and forms but it's the fun stuff that keeps us going in the end. For me, my favorite form of exercise is riding my bike. Sure running is good, swimming is relaxing, and I even like hitting the gym, but riding my bike is truly fun. Not only am I brought back to my days as a kid, but I love being outdoors and exploring new areas while burning calories. I know that bike riding is a favorite among many, but not all, so what is your favorite way to exercise? Speak up and share which exercise you actually look forward to doing. Hopefully, everyone's answers will inspire us all to find the joy in exercise.

Stretch It: Chest Opener Against the Wall

I don't know anyone who couldn't use a good stretch in their chest and shoulders. This stretch is great because it allows you to focus on one side at a time, plus you can do it anywhere there's a wall or pole. If you sit and type all day, or if you commute long distances you have to try this chest-opening stretch. It certainly perks me up after blogging all day.

Another Reason to Run: It Lengthens Your Life

Have you been thinking about taking up running? Well this new study may give you the kick in the pants to start today. It turns out that runners live longer. According to researchers at Stanford University, not only does running reduce your risk of developing cardiovascular disease, but it also helps prevents cancer and neurological conditions like Alzheimer's.

The study followed 284 members of a running club and 156 similar healthy people who didn't run, all 50 and over. The control group did exercise, about 20 minutes a week, and the runners exercised as much as 200 minutes a week (that's about 30 minutes a day). The researchers discovered that after 20 years, 15 percent of those running had passed away, as compared to 34 percent of the non-runners.

OK, so the exact activity of running isn't necessarily the magic pill, but it's the regular physical activity you should be after. It doesn't have to be running, but biking, swimming, dancing, or anything else that gets your heart rate up, and strengthens your muscles, will support your immune system and make you healthier overall. So try to work exercise into your daily schedule. Not only will you feel better, but you'll be able to enjoy life a little longer.

Minutes to a Healthier You . . .

You may feel like if you don't have enough time to do a full workout, that it's not worth doing anything, but every minute that you move adds up. If you're not sure what to do, try this five exercise circuit and repeat it twice.

Fit Tip: Do Exercises You Hate

I don't blame you. You skip out on stretching your hamstrings after a run because they're tight, they hurt, and you hate stretching. Or you plan your bike ride specifically so you don't have to trek it up any hills because they make your thighs burn. You're not alone. Many exercisers don't like struggling with things they aren't naturally good at, so they tend to avoid exercises that really challenge them. I know you're not going to like what I have to say, but the types of exercise that we aren't good at are exactly what we need to spend more time on. They're the ones that will strengthen weak muscles, build our endurance, and make us more balanced overall. They can also help to prevent injuries that can occur from repeating the same types of movements. So whether you're avoiding squats, crunches, hills, push-ups, or stretching, make a conscious effort to add these moves to your routine two or three times a week. After a while, they'll become a little easier, and you might actually begin to like them.

Fit's Tip: Obviously, skip an exercise you hate if it aggravates an injury.

Get on the Ball: Opposite Limb Extensions

We spend so much time working our legs doing squats and running, strength training for our arms, and crunches for our abs, so don't forget about your back. Strengthening this part of your body is excellent for your posture, keeps your spine healthy, and will help prevent injuries due to imbalances in your muscles. Prone Leg Raises are an awesome exercise, but this one will work your upper back as well and truly challenge your core.

Strike a Yoga Pose: Standing Half Bound Lotus

Whenever I say I do yoga, people always ask me if I sit in Lotus and "ommmmm" for three hours straight. Not quite, but Lotus is a pose I often do at the beginning and end of class. It's a pretty advanced pose actually, because it requires incredible flexibility in your hips. If your hips could use a little opening, give Standing Half Bound Lotus a try.

Sanskrit name: Ardha Baddha Padmottanasana
English translation: Half Bound Lotus Standing Forward Bend
Also called: Standing Half Bound Lotus

Fit Tip: Work Your Legs While Blow Drying Your Hair

This may seem silly, but think about how long it takes you to blow dry your hair. Just in those 5 to 10 minutes, you could be fitting in some strengthening and stretching moves for your ankles, calves, shins, quads, hamstrings, booty, lower back, and even your abs. Here are some ideas.

Do squats and side lunges to tone your thighs and glutes.

Work your quads and your abs with alternating knee lifts. Hold one leg up at a time for at least five seconds. To make it harder, straighten the lifted leg. Balancing on one foot will also strengthen the muscles in the leg that's on the ground.

Strengthen your calves and shins with heel lifts.

Ankle rolls will stretch the muscles in your feet.

Prop your foot up on the sink, keep that leg straight and fold forward to stretch your hamstring. Hold for at least 30 seconds on each side.

You can also stretch out your hip by doing Standing Pigeon on the sink.

Stretch out your lower back and hamstrings with a relaxing Forward Bend (and dry the back of your hair at the same time).

Fit's Tip: If you don't blow dry your hair everyday, you can always challenge your sense of balance while you brush your teeth.

Maybe you're inspired to workout after watching some of the Olympic games. Or maybe you had one too many slices of peach pie this weekend and feel the need to add some cardio to your life. Regardless, now is the time to pencil in some workouts for the upcoming week. Get out your calendar, find your address book, and make a fitness date with a friend. Instead of gabbing while getting your nails done, you can talk while you walk or run. Meet at the gym and catch up while you stretch out post workout. Convince a pal to try a belly dance class with you and then head to a healthy dinner afterwards. Have fun, burn some calories, and hangout with a friend — sounds like a winning combination.

I will be biking with an old friend Tuesday morning at 6 a.m., followed by a large and steamy latte. What about you?

Get Physical: Playground Workout

Your local playground is not just for child's play; it is a workout waiting to happen, and a fun one at that. If you happen to have kids and they drag you to the park. Don't sit idly by, try some of these moves. If you don't have a kid, just go and have fun and remember to share the monkey bars with the wee ones.

On the swing: Instead of using your legs to pump, hold your legs straight out in front of you. Not only will this target your abs, but you'll use the muscles in your arms and back to keep up your swinging momentum.

On a bench: Do tricep dips.

On the monkey bars: You may be too tall, so hold onto the first bar and use your abs and quads to bend your knees and lift them up off the ground. Then one at a time, move your hands across the bars to get to the other end. This is a killer upper body workout.

For more ideas

You Asked: Will Working Out at Night Make Falling Asleep Difficult?

You're asking and I'm answering . . .

Hey Fit,
I just started a new job that makes it impossible to exercise in the morning like I used to (I'd have to wake up at 4 am, which is just not going to happen). So in order to fit my workouts in, I have to hit the gym from 7 to 8 p.m. Since I get up so early, I like to be in bed before 10, but will working out late make it hard for me to fall asleep?
—Need My Sleep Sally

I don't blame you for not wanting to wake up at the crack of dawn to exercise, and you should be proud of yourself for trying to fit it in to your busy schedule instead of skipping out on it entirely. Although evening workouts may not be your first choice, there are definitely some benefits. Now you can hit the gym and not feel rushed to get to work. Your late night workouts may even be more productive and your risk for injury may be reduced because you're more awake.

So will it affect your ability to fall asleep? To find out

Stretch It: Tipover Tuck

I love stretches that you can feel over your entire body, and while this is mostly a move you'll feel in your chest and shoulders, you'll also feel this in your hamstrings and lower back. It's a great one to add to your stretching repertoire.

Fitness Gadget: Hydrosport Wrist Water Bottles

Staying hydrated on the go is certainly important, and the wide variety of products out there to help you sip water on run attest to that. If the water bottle as a backpack variation or water bottle amo belt don't do it for you, you may be interested in the water bottle as a bracelet. The Hydrosport ($18.45) is similar to the QuickDraw Water Bottle, the water bottle with hand straps, but Hydrosport allows you to be completely hands-free since they wrap around your wrists. Each bottle holds four ounces of water, and weighs half a pound so it won't add a whole lot of extra weight to your hands, which could potentially cause injury when walking or running. Another great thing is when you fill them with cold water, they can help keep you cool during your workout.

I know these are a little different, and that the image seems so very 80s, but they're kind of cool. So tell me, do you think you'd ever use these?
Sticking to the common strength training principal in gymnastics, the "Awesome Dawesome" still steers clears of weights.
Workout Gone Awry: Sharp, Shooting Pain

Getting stronger and faster means sometimes enduring a wee bit of pain. Some consider DOMS, that pain that comes on 12 to 24 hours after a workout, to be a good thing. Sharp, shooting immediate pain, on the other hand, means stop.

Sharp pain while exercising is your body's way of communicating with you that you are doing something it doesn't like. Your body wants and needs you to stop. Listen to this pain; chances are it is in some joint or your lower back area.

If you are strength training, stop and check your technique. Try the motion again a little more slowly and thoughtfully. Same pain? Then try the motion smaller. Same pain? Then stop. You experimented with your options, so stopping does not mean wimping out. In this case, it means you're taking care of yourself. If you work with a trainer, ask him or her to watch your form or suggest an alternative exercise for you to try. The sharp pain generally means you are injuring the tissues in your joint, and trust me, you don't want to damage your soft tissues.

All that being said, to get stronger you do have to push yourself and getting close to maximum effort is going to feel taxing. You have to learn by trial and error when to push yourself, when to ease up, and when to stop.

Favorite Excuse Not to Run: It Hurts My Back

For some women, running hurts their knees, shins, or chest, but another common complaint is back pain. Your back can either hurt during a run, directly afterward, or even the next day. Back pain can make it hard to sleep, walk, work, or sit at a desk, and it will definitely make you never want to run again. Here are some tips to help prevent back pain while running:

Check your posture. Make sure your shoulders aren't way forward over your toes, or way back past your heels. Your shoulders should be directly over your hips, which will help prevent back pain, and will also ensure that your lungs can expand and contract fully without any restriction. If you're not sure if you have correct running posture, have someone watch you or videotape you while you run.

Running on completely unforgiving concrete sidewalks can certainly hurt your body. Avoid the sidewalk and opt for the dirt roads, a track, or asphalt instead.

To find out what else will help,

Squat Options

If you're pressed for time and feel like strength training has been pushed aside, I am here to tell you that you have squat options. While adding a smattering of squats throughout your day might not be ideal, it is better than nothing.

Here are some suggestions:

Laundry Squats: Combining two unpleasant tasks makes them both somehow sweeter. It is a multitasking move the whole family can love.

Potty Squats: If you're desk bound and feeling disembodied, take a trip to the ladies and do some squats.

Chair Squats: Chairs might be for sitting, but if you hover just above your seat your other seat will get a nice workout. This one is easier to get away with if you work at home.

I have a couple more suggestions so

Swim Tip: Make One of Your Laps All About Your Legs

Don't get me wrong. I love that swimming is a total body workout, but sometimes I miss that intense lower-body burn that I get from a good run or bike ride. If you want to increase the intensity of your swim workout, especially in your legs, try this. After every three regular laps, do a kicking lap. That means you keep you arms either at your sides or straight in front of you (like Superwoman), and propel your body through the water solely with the movement of your legs. It doesn't matter what kind of kicks you do, but my favorite is scissor kicking so my legs feel like they're working equally.

At first it'll be really tough to do an entire lap of kicking, so start off by swimming as much of the lap with your legs as you can. Pretty soon, you'll find your legs gaining strength and endurance. Not only are these kicking laps great for toning your quads, hamstrings, bum, and lower back, but I've found that when I go back to swimming using my entire body, I feel much faster and and more powerful overall.

Fit's Tip: If your gym has them, you can use a kickboard to help your torso stay afloat. It'll help you concentrate on just kicking your legs.

Source

Get Lifted: Chair Push-Ups

Regular push-ups too boring for you?
Strike a Yoga Pose: Inverted Staff Pose

If you love backbends, it's because you are probably emotional with an open heart and tender nature, and hold excitement about the future. Here's a variation to the backbend called Inverted Staff. The base of this pose is actually a headstand, so it's a very grounding.

Sanskrit Name: Viparita Dandasana
English Translation: Inverted Staff Pose
Also Called: Two-Legged Inverted Staff or Headstand Backbend

There are two ways to get into this pose. To find out what they are

Ashley Harkleroad: First Female Tennis Player on Playboy

It's nothing new for female athletes to pose for Playboy (Olympic swimmer Amanda Beard and former volleyball player Gabrielle Reece have both posed), but Ashley Harkleroad is the first pro female tennis player to appear on the cover. Although she may not be well-known, she does rank in the top 100 in the world and recently moved up to 72. Harkleroad decided to pose for Playboy to show that athletic women could be sexy. Um, I'm not sure where she heard that they weren't, but I guess there are worse reasons to pose nude.

Her eight-page spread in the August 2008 issue is causing quite a stir on the tennis scene. She said:

"For me, I have a very natural body. I'm an athlete who is fit and not very big-busted at all. I'm proud of that. I wanted to show that female athletes, who are fit and muscular, can have very beautiful bodies just like regular models. l'll be the first tennis player ever. That's kind of cool."

I think it's great to be proud of your body, especially when Playboy's definition of sexy has traditionally been thin and big-busted ladies. To hear what Serena Williams said in response to Harkleroad's photos and to see the first page of her layout

You Asked: Why Does Running Feel Bad?

You're asking and I'm answering . . .

Hey Fit,
I really want to start running because I hear the benefits are great. I tried a while ago, but afterwards I felt nauseous and generally not well. That discouraged me from trying again. Why did I feel that way? If I start running regularly, will that stop? Thanks.
— Running Newbie

Don't give up on running; I find it the easiest way to fit a regular workout into my life and the health benefits really are great. I think I have a simple solution to your problem, and to see what I have to say

Do You Spit When You Exercise?

I mean with all that huffing and puffing, saliva just ends up collecting in my mouth, and swallowing it just seems icky, so I just get rid of it. Hey, a girl's got to do what a girl's got to do, right? Of course, I try to do it when no one's around since most people think it's pretty unlady-like and unsanitary.
Partner Yoga Pose: Seated Butterfly Lounge

Keeping your hips flexible helps prevent injury, and here's a great hip stretch you can do with a partner. It's similar to the Seated Straddle Lounge, but for this one, the person on the bottom is in Butterfly pose with her feet together and her knees out wide.

Fit Tip: Count Your Repetitions Out Loud

When I'm lifting weights, doing push-ups, or working on lunges, I tend to lose track of my repetitions. You too? Then try counting out loud next time. Not only will it help you remember how many you've completed (and how many you have left), but it's incredibly motivational. I feel like my own cheering squad. It also helps me remember to inhale between each repetition (instead of unintentionally holding my breath). I count loudly if I'm at home, but if I'm at the gym, then I just whisper. Try either counting forward (1, 2, 3 . . . ) or backward (15, 14, 13 . . . ). Experiment with both ways to see which you like best.

You're asking and I'm answering . . .

Hi Fit,
I was so proud of myself doing lunges on my Wii Fit the other day — the trainer even said I did a GREAT JOB. Such a great job that I have been in pain for the last three days and I fee like an old lady! I know muscles ache sometimes after working them, but this has been 3 days. Did I do something wrong? Did I need to stretch afterwards? Is there anything I can do now to help the ache? It's become difficult to sit down in a chair and also even walk down the stairs. Help!
— Lunging Lucy

While many of us might enjoy a little post workout pain as a pleasant reminder of how hard we worked, too much of this pain can feel downright debilitating. To see how you can deal with this pain

During Exercise, Are You Drenched in Sweat?

It's all part of the reason I love to move. Sweating makes me feel like I've worked hard and am cleansing myself. My workouts are tough, so I usually end up sweating a lot, especially if the temperature is hot. Afterwards, my clothes are usually pretty saturated. I've seen people though who can ring out their shirts from all their sweat, and I've seen people whose skin is barely glistening. So where do you fall when it comes to exercise and sweat?

Seriously? An Exercise Pill?

The fitness world just got a new prescription. Scientists have developed a pill that helps you burn calories without exercising one bit. So far only mice have benefited from this new exercise pill. It's tricked the rodents' muscles into thinking they've been working out, and their little bodies ended up burning calories without lifting a paw. It's also improved their fitness performance, helping mice run 68 percent longer and 70 percent farther than mice who exercised but didn't receive the drug. That's great news for those mousy couch potatoes who decide to get off their furry tushes and do a few laps around the cage.

Scientists aren't sure how this exercise pill called AICAR would work on the human population, but they're hoping a drug like this could help treat people suffering from obesity, diabetes, or other injuries and conditions that make it difficult to exercise regularly. While that is all well and good, it seems like the majority of people who'll want this magic pill will be able-bodied individuals looking for a way to skip out on their morning jog. Or it may be sought after by fitness fanatics and athletes who want to improve their endurance, or get an edge over their competition.

This pill, as amazing as it sounds, can only help to mimic aerobic activity, but a person will still need to strength train in order to tone their muscles. Also, besides burning calories, I can think of so many other reasons that exercise is necessary. It keeps your heart healthy, boosts your confidence, prevents depression and osteoporosis, and gives you time to yourself — you can't fulfill all that in a pill. So what do you think about this exercise drug? Would you take it?

Fitness Gadget: GoFit Ultimate ProGym

If you love to use dumbbells while strength training, you're going to love using resistance bands. Not only can you do the same exercises, but you'll work your muscles differently because you can move the band in every direction.

If you're in the market for some bands, check out this GoFit Ultimate ProGym. It comes with three different bands with 5-, 10-, and 15-pound tension, two ankle straps, a door anchor, and two handles. The best part is that it also comes with a DVD, so you can learn how to use all this great stuff to strengthen and tone every part of your body. I love that it comes with a little carrying bag, so you can bring it on vacation with you. OK, well maybe you won't, but at least you have the option.

Running Strategy: Hills

If you run outside, chances are high that you have encountered some hills. Hill work is considered one of the building blocks of running because it builds strength. So don't avoid the challenge of the natural incline.

When running uphill, it helps to follow the biking strategy. Cyclists prepare for their climb by shifting into an easy gear for the ascent. Runners should switch gears too. Instead of trying to attack a hill maintaining the same pace as you would on flat terrain, slow down. Your energy output while running uphill should remain the same as it was before you started your ascent. Your breathing should not speed up and your heart rate shouldn't either. While you might be moving more slowly, you're using your energy more efficiently, so you can keep on running, which really is the point.

When I am running uphill, my mantra is "slow and steady wins the race." I may be a tortoise, but I am still running.

Source

Which Upper Body Exercise Do You Love the Most?

These lovely and cooling fashions require a little attention to the upper body. I tend to find strength training for the arms and back enjoyable. I like to work my triceps with Tricep Dips, my upper back doing Seated Rows, my chest and shoulders doing Chest Presses, and I throw Balancing Push-ups in the mix to strengthen my overall upper body, core, and arms. Out of all these exercises . . .

Fit Tip: Stay Cool With an Icy Bandana

After reading my post about soaking your hair before a workout, a friend of mine shared a similar stay-cool tip that I just have to pass along.

When hiking, playing tennis, or participating in other warm-weather activities, try soaking a bandana in ice water and wearing it as a headband. That way you can stay cool and show off some hippie-chic style. Or, if it's really hot, try rolling up a few ice cubes in your bandana and tying it around your neck, situating the ice at your back so the cool water trickles down. If you're near a cooler, you can even keep rewetting and reicing the bandana throughout the day.

One caveat: Although wetting your hair or tying on an ice-cold bandana can help you stay cool, it's no substitute for actually drinking water, so don't forget to hydrate!
