Easter is coming up this Sunday, and for those of you who celebrate and are also trying to watch your weight, this means another holiday of dealing with candy and sweets. The positive side is that there is no rule that says you have to fill your Easter basket with pounds of chocolate eggs and jellybeans. Fill your basket with these healthier alternatives instead:
- Carrots (since the Easter Bunny likes to share)
- Fresh fruit
- Homemade cookies that are filled with healthy ingredients like oats, raisins, dried cranberries, walnuts, and dark chocolate chips
- Bars of Dark chocolate
- Colored eggs made with homemade dyes
- Dark chocolate covered peanuts, pretzels, or raisins
- Mini banana bread muffins
- Fitness DVDs
- A scented candle
- Animal shaped hand soaps (my girls love these)

I wont be hunting for any Easter eggs this year, but if I were, I'd want to put them in a contemporary basket. The requisite pastel pink and purple baskets are festive and traditional, but it's 2009. It's about time for some modern Easter decor — at least for grownups.

Traditional Easter egg hunts and baskets are a dentist's nightmare. I suggest asking the Easter bunny to pack your baskets with reading material, bath toys or tiny stuffed animals, but you may have to get more creative if you hope to fill your hunt eggs with something other than chocolate. Easter goodie aisles at drug, craft and grocery stores are overflowing with robin eggs and chocolate delights, but if you'd rather bring home a bunch of bunnies then give your children a basketful of candy — the secret to Easter basket success is planning ahead and purchasing one medium sized treat (like a stuffed animal or book that's under $20) and a few healthy snacks or mini toys.
- Aim for an inexpensive basket like this festive Colored Easter Basket ($6) from Pottery Barn Kids. If you don't want to make a mess skip the fake grass and use tissue paper.
- Forgo candy and instead fill your basket with toys that will last longer than a single sweet moment.

Pharmacies may have started loading up on Cadbury eggs a few weeks ago, but today is the first day of Lent, which means Easter is truly on the horizon. Take advantage of the 46 days left until the Easter Bunny hops into town by stocking up on unique baskets and egg-y goodies.
These Williams-Sonoma Personalized Easter Baskets ($24 each) are ideal for the pre-planner because they are only available via Internet and catalog.
