Aches and pains are part of pregnancy, but some are harder to handle than others. The sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back, through the glutes, and down the back of each leg, is the largest nerve in the body. Because of the nerve's placement under the uterus, it is pressed as the baby grows, often creating sharp or aching pain during pregnancy.

Pregnancy affects everybody differently and I mean every BODY. Some women gain 12 pounds while others gain 100 more. One lady may carry the weight in her legs but her sister holds it in the rear.

Dear Fit,
Over the Summer I've definitely been overindulging, chowing down at BBQs, eating tons of ice cream on hot days, and drinking more beer and cocktails in a weekend than I would in an entire month the rest of the year. I know it's not the healthiest, but hey, it's Summer and it only comes once a year. I haven't really gained weight, but I feel pretty disgusting.

Running as a convenient form of cardio may be the bee's knees, but it can leave my knees aching. Although studies have found there is no connection between running and an increased risk for arthritis, there are some easy ways to show your knees some love.
- Stay flexible: Tight hamstrings or quads can prevent the knee from going through its full range of motion, which can negatively impact the soft tissues that work the knee.

Some mamas-to-be glow and others ache. For those burdened by the physical discomforts of pregnancy, consider taking to the table and letting a masseuse reducing stress, relieve muscle tension and joint pains in the lower back and legs while increasing blood circulation to minimize swelling. The benefits of these luxurious treatments come at a price and are still debated in the medical community, but expectant women seem to agree that the trained human touch works wonders.

Dear Fit,
During my period, I get very uncomfortable lower-back pain, like a dull ache. I used to think this was just me, but I recently spoke to another female friend who says she gets the same pain. I'm sure it has something to do with everything going on down there, since it often comes with cramps, but why exactly does this happen?

Dear Fit,
Sometimes when I run, I get this twanging pain right below my rib cage. This side stitch aching is so uncomfortable that I have to stop running and wait for it to go away. What causes this pain and is there anything I can do to prevent it from happening in the first place?

Surgery
Kyphoplasty, a surgical technique used to treat spinal fractures, does not improve a person's back pain or quality of life, according to a review published in 2006 by a nonprofit health services research agency. Kyphoplasty should only be done if bed rest, medicines, and physical therapy do not relieve back pain.
Ultrasound
Therapeutic ultrasound uses sound waves to deliver gentle vibrations to an area of the body.
