DrSugar Answers: Losing Too Much Weight Running?

DrSugar is in the house and answering your questions.

Dear DrSugar,
I have a problem that might seem a little odd, but I am not dieting and I am losing too much weight. I am training for a marathon, and exercise daily about 2 hours Monday through Friday (running outside mixed with swimming, spin class, body pump, and running on Treadmill). My Saturday workout is always a long run, and my Sunday workout is a short run. I know I am not pregnant, but my last period was 5 months ago. Is this due to too much exercise? Other than the missing period, I feel strong and fine. And I eat healthy meals every 2 to 3 hours. Is this something that I need to worry about?
Running Rita

This is an interesting multi-faceted question. DrSugar and I decided we should both tackle this one. To read what DrSugar has to say about this, just

The Summer Games Move to the Track

Swimming has definitely dominated the first week of the Olympics. Doubtless because all kinds of records are being broken in the pool and on the medal podium. All us landlubbers can give a big cheer because the Track and Field events began yesterday. Runners all around the world will be taking time away from their own training to watch the elite international competitors of track and field.

There are many events in this discipline testing speed and endurance, plus all those things to throw: shot put, javelin, discus and hammer. Don't forget the jumping events, both high and long, and the dance-like triple jump. And yes, steeplechase is a track and field event, not an equestrian one.

There are many qualifying heats all day long, but to see a list of upcoming final events

You Asked: Does Talking While Running Burn More Calories?

You're asking and I'm answering.

Hey Fit,
I've been jogging by myself about three times a week for a year, and just recently, I started going with a friend. I actually like it better because we motivate each other to keep going, but I found that when we're talking during our run, it's so much harder. I'm wondering, does talking while running burn more calories?
—Chatty Cathy

This is a great question because I'm sure many of you run with a buddy, and you can't help but gab away. To find out my take on this issue

Another Reason to Run: It Lengthens Your Life

Have you been thinking about taking up running? Well this new study may give you the kick in the pants to start today. It turns out that runners live longer. According to researchers at Stanford University, not only does running reduce your risk of developing cardiovascular disease, but it also helps prevents cancer and neurological conditions like Alzheimer's.

The study followed 284 members of a running club and 156 similar healthy people who didn't run, all 50 and over. The control group did exercise, about 20 minutes a week, and the runners exercised as much as 200 minutes a week (that's about 30 minutes a day). The researchers discovered that after 20 years, 15 percent of those running had passed away, as compared to 34 percent of the non-runners.

OK, so the exact activity of running isn't necessarily the magic pill, but it's the regular physical activity you should be after. It doesn't have to be running, but biking, swimming, dancing, or anything else that gets your heart rate up, and strengthens your muscles, will support your immune system and make you healthier overall. So try to work exercise into your daily schedule. Not only will you feel better, but you'll be able to enjoy life a little longer.

You Asked: Why Does Running Feel Bad?

You're asking and I'm answering . . .

Hey Fit,
I really want to start running because I hear the benefits are great. I tried a while ago, but afterwards I felt nauseous and generally not well. That discouraged me from trying again. Why did I feel that way? If I start running regularly, will that stop? Thanks.
— Running Newbie

Don't give up on running; I find it the easiest way to fit a regular workout into my life and the health benefits really are great. I think I have a simple solution to your problem, and to see what I have to say

Running Strategy: Hills

If you run outside, chances are high that you have encountered some hills. Hill work is considered one of the building blocks of running because it builds strength. So don't avoid the challenge of the natural incline.

When running uphill, it helps to follow the biking strategy. Cyclists prepare for their climb by shifting into an easy gear for the ascent. Runners should switch gears too. Instead of trying to attack a hill maintaining the same pace as you would on flat terrain, slow down. Your energy output while running uphill should remain the same as it was before you started your ascent. Your breathing should not speed up and your heart rate shouldn't either. While you might be moving more slowly, you're using your energy more efficiently, so you can keep on running, which really is the point.

When I am running uphill, my mantra is "slow and steady wins the race." I may be a tortoise, but I am still running.

Running Tip: Keep Track of Your Mileage

If you run for fun or just to stay healthy, you probably aren't too concerned about how many miles you rack up, but you should be. Not to brag to your friends and family, but to help figure out when you need to purchase new shoes. You should be springing for new sneaks after you've completed between 300 and 400 miles.

Here are some ways to keep track:

Wear a pedometer. About 2,000 steps is equivalent to one mile. Keep track of your miles each week by writing them down in a fitness journal.

Use an iPod Nano and the Nike + iPod Sports Kit to track your mileage per workout. Then you can upload your data to the NikePlus.com website, and they'll keep track of your mileage for you.

Run on a track. It's easy to know how much you've run since four laps equals one mile. Jot down your mileage each time you run.

If you like to run outside but aren't sure how long your favorite neighborhood route is, use Google Maps Gmaps Pedometer to help you figure it out.

Use another techy device like a handheld GPS or watch/heart rate monitor that has a mileage feature to figure out the distance you've traveled per run.

Fit Tip: Run With Someone Who's Faster Than You

One of my running goals is to run a little faster and I've found that when I run outside alone, I'm not that motivated to push myself. When I run with someone else, whose pace is slightly faster than mine, it totally encourages me to kick it up a notch and keep up. So if increasing your speed is something you want to do, find a running buddy who'll give you that extra push.

Things to Know About Running and Your Knees

Let's face it, running is a convenient form of exercise and can make you high. The only downside, I seem to experience is the occasional aching knee.

I take care of this important joint by strengthening my quads and rolling out my ITB. I do find it heartening that many studies have found that running doesn't contribute to osteoarthritis in the knee joint. Many of the studies on avid runners, weekend warriors and non-runners found that running did not increase the risk of developing arthritis. While little aches do creep up every now and then, the benefits of running seem to outweigh the pain.

Speaking of weight, it is true that every extra pound you carry on your frame creates an extra four pounds of stress on the knee. Running to stay in shape and keep off weight helps your knees, which in turn will keep you running. So get out there, and don't pound the pavement, run softly on the trail and enjoy your strong legs and healthy knees.

Fit Tip: Run Backwards

If you're tired of your same old running route, but don't have time to map out a new run, might I suggest running backward. Not literally running backward, although that does have its merits too, but try running your route in reverse. I did this yesterday, and it was like a whole new run. I saw houses and gardens I have never noticed before – these are the things that keep me entertained while running. My run felt new and exciting, although the hills that are usually challenging to run up were also challenging to run down.

This trick for invigorating your basic running route works well for walking and biking too. Try it and see what I mean.

Lolo Jones doesn't just run. She runs and jumps over things – hurdles to be exact that are 33 inches high. Lolo is fast too and her goal is to win gold in Beijing. She recently shared highlights of her training schedule with Women's Health and here they are.

Jones trains in cycles, so depending on the season her workouts vary. In the Fall she focuses on tempo runs and Pilates strengthening moves. In the Spring, the workouts are focused more on sprinting. Regardless of the season, Lolo lifts weights every day but Friday and Sunday.

To see what Jones eats

Track Etiquette

I have been hitting the track lately for sprint interval workouts. The track close to my house is full of folks working out, which I must say makes my heart swell with joy. All those people exercising outside feels like an inspirational community to me. Problem is some folks don't know how to share.

Like most public spaces, there is an etiquette to working out at a track. Just like driving on the freeway, the inside lanes are for fast running, and you should keep to the right if you're going slowly. If you're walking or doing a recovery jog interval, stick to the outside lanes. You should also yield to faster runners.

Another important unstated rule is that the direction of traffic is counter clockwise. So don't run against the flow. As always, have fun out there.

Get It Up, Your Heart Rate That Is: Sprint Intervals at the Track

Interval training is key to not only burning more calories but to increasing your speed too. They are tough, but they work your body and prepare you well for the races ahead. Even if you don't like to race, intervals are a great way to add spark to your running routine and help you move past a weight loss plateau. I wish I could say that I love this workout, but that would be a lie. Just ask my running buddy to tell you how I curse when doing this interval training. I can, however, easily admit that I love how I feel afterward, and I love that I burn over 450 calories while doing it.

To see the workout,

DrSugar on Chronic and Nagging Knee Pain

DrSugar is keyed up about the knee and the nagging pain in that joint that can frustrate your fitness drive. Here's what he has to say.

Let's begin with a brief anatomy lesson for the knee is a complicated structure with multiple moving parts and a variety of connective tissues holding everything together. For a dedicated athlete or even the average weekend warrior, the knee joint is a minefield of potential sites of injury. Commonly injured areas prone to inflammation include: the prepatellar bursa (in front of the knee cap), patellar tendon (holds the knee cap in place), anterior cruciate ligament (criss-crosses inside the knee), meniscus (lines the bottom of the knee joint), as well as the bones and muscles making up the knee joint.

Now that you know a little more about the structure of the knee, to see how it can break down

A Need for Speed

Running for me is the simplest exercise to fit into my schedule, and now that I have a few races under my belt I want a little more out of running. I want to run faster. One thing I know about my relationship with running, is that change takes time and it is best to have a plan. So instead of just hitting the pavement harder and hoping to go faster, here's a simple drill I am going to try.

Designed by running guru Jeff Galloway, a man dedicated to bringing running to the masses, this exercise is considered a cadence drill.

Here's how it works:

After warming up, jog or run a 30-second interval and count the number of times your left foot touches the ground.

Recover for one to two minutes with walking or jogging.

Speed up again and count the times your left touches the ground in 30 seconds but try to increase the number from your previous interval by 1 or 2.

Repeat this sequence several times and keep upping the number. You can do this drill at a track or on the road – it's pretty versatile.

I certainly hope counting my steps while watching my stopwatch isn't harder than walking and chewing gum. I do think I am up for the challenge, are you? After all this is considered a gentle speed drill.

Source

Nike+ Human Race: One Day, One Race, One Million Runners

So you run and aren't quite ready to tackle a marathon, but are looking for a race to run. Have I got an event for you. You can participate in the largest, most unique worldwide 10K race — the Nike+ Human Race. It takes place on August 31, 2008, and there are two ways you can run. Either sign up to run in one of the 25 designated race cities including New York City, Los Angeles, Paris, Madrid, or London. Or you can opt to run wherever you are — on a treadmill, on the road, or in the woods. Just track your "race" using either the Nike+ iPod Sports Kit (if you like to run while listening to your iPod nano), or with the Nike+ SportBand (if you don't have a nano). After the race, connect either your nano or the SportBand to your computer to upload your race data to the NikePlus.com website.

Runner's Issue: Black Toenails?

There are many health perks to endurance training for events like marathons, but there are some unfortunate consequences to logging that many miles. You could end up with a subungual hematoma, which is medical speak for bleeding under your toenails. This condition of blood collecting under the nailbed can cause some severe pain, and it will also turn your toenails black – painful and not at all pretty.

You can prevent the dreaded black toenail by making sure your sneakers fit properly. If your shoes don't fit well, your foot may slide forward with each step you take. This sliding action brings your toes in contact with the front of your shoe. This consistent tapping injures your toenail which makes it bleed underneath.

To ensure proper sneaker fit, you should have about a thumbs-width distance between your big toe and the end of the shoe. Your heels shouldn't be sliding up and down either. It is worth it to take a trip to a running store and have the running enthusiasts there help you find a shoe that fits well.

Fit's Tip: When this condition arises, you can still wear your fashionable sandals. Just opt for a dark toe nail polish that will cover up your bruise.

5 Ways to Deal with Side Stitches

You're running full speed ahead and suddenly you get an excruciating pain in your side: the dreaded side stitch. Nothing kills a good workout like getting cramps and luckily there are a few things you can do to keep them at bay. Here are five easy to follow tips:

Try to avoid eating one to two hours before a workout. If you must eat then avoid fatty foods and proteins and stick to carbohydrates.

Hydrate before and during exercise; contrary to popular belief, dehydration can increase muscle cramps.

Focus on your breathing. Take a few deep breaths every once in a while to stretch your diaphragm as well as to ensure that all parts of your body are receiving the amount of oxygen they need to keep going.

Once you first experience cramping slow down your pace until the pain subsides.

Massaging or pressing on the area and bending over can help reduce the pain.

Do you have a no-fail remedy for side stitches? Share them below.

You Asked: Why Does Running Make Me Have to "Go?"

"Fit. I've recently started running but I've noticed an unpleasant side effect. A few times I've had to get off the treadmill and run to the bathroom. It's totally embarrassing to me; please tell me it's normal."
—Running to Restroom

Great question and I love when readers pose slightly embarrassing questions because it always provides a small sigh of relief for everyone to read it and say, "I'm not alone." Needing to go is a very common issue among runners; let's just say that the abundance of port-o-potties at marathons are not for the spectator's use. To see why, just

Avoid Shin Splints with Heels Walks

One of the dreaded side affects from starting a new walking or running routine is shin splints. The pain down the outside of your lower leg may be caused by a variety of issues, but the calf muscle tends to get stronger before the muscles on the front of the shin. While stretching the calves is intuitive post run, strengthening the opposing muscles on the front of the shin is not. A simple exercise to do just that is heel walks.

The exercise name describes the action quite well. Walk about 20 yards on your heels with toes lifted off the ground. Take small steps and keep your toes, even though they are up off the ground, pointed forward (don't let your toes rotate outward). You can do this exercise barefoot or in your sneakers.

Fit's Tip: This is a great exercise to incorporate into your dynamic warm-up.

Fit Tip: Runners Should Balance Out Leg Muscles

If you, like me, spend a lot of time running (on the treadmill or outside) then you're definitely giving your hamstrings a nice workout, which is awesome. Keep in mind, though, that it is important to work opposing muscles in order to keep your body alignment and balance in check. This does not mean you need to start running backwards (unless you want to, of course). Instead, just be sure to work your quads (the hamstrings opposing muscle group) a few times a week and doing so should help balance out all the great running you're doing.

And in case you're wondering . . . a good, no fuss exercise that is a surefire way to work your quads is squats.

Running Tip: Run From Your Pelvis

I am going to be honest here and confess that there comes a point in every run when I would just like to stop running altogether. Either my feet feel tired or my lungs don't feel like working that hard. I'm not alone in this, am I?

I have learned that running is a mental game, so I take these moments to refocus my energy on my pelvis. Thinking of leading from my pelvis, instead of my legs or feet, is a great mental activity and sure does make me feel light and quick. I often see tired runners, and am guilty of this myself, leaning forward or leading with the top of the head. This is bad for the neck and wastes energy.

I imagine there is a large hand behind me gently pushing my pelvis forward. This action helps me engage my upper hamstrings, too, and I feel like I am running faster. And that's always a bonus, even if the speed is all in my head.

Source

Running Tip: Try a Dynamic Warm Up

When warming up for a run you have more options than just walking briskly or jogging slowly; you can warm up dynamically. Doesn't that sound like fun! Here are a few moves that prime your body for running:

High-Knee Marching: Marching in place while bringing the knees up to at least 90 degrees alternating legs, or better yet even with your belly button, is a great warm up for your hip flexors. If you plan on sprinting, this is your must-do move. Do a total of 20.

Kicking Your Bum: Yes before you let your workout kick you in the bum, you should kick your own. Stand in place and alternate legs, bringing your heel to your booty, by bending your knee. This will warm up your quad and lubricate your knee joint. Kick yourself 20 times.

Skipping: Don't underestimate the joyful childhood movement of skipping. This warms up your entire leg and gets your ankle joint primed for impact. Skip for 30 seconds.

There are three more moves, so

If you tend to jog at an even pace, then your heart rate probably stays pretty consistent as well. This is great for burning calories and of course you're definitely working the muscles in your lower body, but if you want to get your heart pumping a little faster then you've got to work sprints into your routine.

Since sprinting is tough on your muscles and your lungs, you'll want to ease into them. Before adding sprinting intervals throughout your run, try sprinting the last thirty seconds of your workout. It's easier to run at the end because you know that after the thirty seconds is up, you can stop and cool down. It feels amazing to push yourself, and I guarantee that you'll feel so strong and proud when you're done. I always pretend that I'm racing someone for first place, and that the thirty-second mark is the finish line. It may be childish, but it sure gets my legs moving.

5 Things For Trail Running

Running in the woods is one of my favorite ways to work out because it's peaceful, all those hills are great for my quads and booty, and the soft dirt is easy on my joints. If you love trail running, too, here are some things to think about:

Harder to spot than curbs, tree roots and rocks are a natural part of the trail. Keep your eyes peeled and focused forward, scanning the trail for obstacles.

Bug spray is a great idea since mosquitoes and other creepy crawlies love to buzz around in damp places.

Avoid mud and puddles. Not only is it slippery and dirty, but if your feet get wet, you're more likely to develop blisters.

Like always, it is important to shower immediately after your run because you might have come into contact with poison ivy or poison oak. Scrubbing your legs with soap and water will help get rid of the oils that cause the rash.

Check yourself for ticks after a run, too. You can use a mirror or ask a friend to check the parts you have a hard time seeing. Don't forget your head — ticks like to hide.

Words That Move You . . .

Sometimes all it takes are a few good words to get you moving.

“When I first started running, I was so embarrassed I'd walk when cars passed me. I'd pretend I was looking at the flowers.”
– Joan Benoit Samuelson*, winner of the 1984 Olympic marathon

*Benoit Samuelson ran in the marathon Olympic trials this year and completed the race in 2:49:08 – I'd say she overcame her embarrassment really well.

Run on Vacation!

How many times have you said to yourself that you would run on vacation – you have the free time – and then never really rallied to get up and run?

Now you can excuse proof your Summer vacation with a few simple clicks at Run.com. It is the easiest way to find running routes at your vacation destination worldwide. Yep, I found a nice run in Paris even though I have no plans to head to France anytime soon, but am still inspired. On a more practical note, I did look up running routes for my upcoming beach vacation. I plan to print them out before I head out, so I don't have to open my computer to go for a run.

Summer Fit Tip: Start Slow

If you're more accustomed to running indoors on a treadmill but have decided to take advantage of the weather by running outdoors then you may want to take it slow at first. Running on a treadmill inside and running on the sidewalk outside are very different. One is not necessarily better than the other, but each requires different things from your body. Simple differences like wind and uneven running surfaces can make outdoor running a bit tougher, especially if you factor in heat.

The best way to make the transition from indoor running to outdoor running is to take it slow — don't expect to run five miles with ease outside if you're used to doing so on the treadmill. You may be ready aerobically, but it's good to give yourself a few weeks to get your body used to the added impact on your joints.

What's the Deal With Pronation?

"Pronation" may sound like a country inhabited entirely by paid athletes, but it's actually a concept that all amateur runners need to understand. The word refers to the way your foot rolls as it hits the ground, and understanding your pronation type is crucial when choosing a pair of running shoes.

Are you an overpronator or an underpronator? And why does it matter? To find out,

Learn to Love: Running and Biking in the Wind

Riding my bike into a strong headwind used to make me irritable, but lately I have learned to love it. Nature is providing me with an extra challenge for free. Talk about seeing the glass half full!

Running or biking into the wind provides resistance, thereby forcing you to work harder. It's like adding some resistance training into your run, similar to using a parachute strapped to your waist. I've seen Tyra Banks do it, so I know it can be done. On a windy day, you don't need extra equipment, and you get some resistance for free.

It is important to train in all types of conditions, so come race day, you are prepared for all types of weather. Especially windy days are one such adverse condition. When I am running into the wind, I focus on how fast I will feel on my next run on a windless day. So don't let a blustery day keep you indoors running on a treadmill. Embrace the elements and the chance to challenge yourself.

Favorite Excuse Not to Run: It Hurts My Chest

If you gave running a try, but you felt self-conscious about all the action in your front section, or it left your chest in too much pain to enjoy it, then you're not alone. That's why sports bras were invented in the first place — to keep the bouncing at bay. However, not all sports bras are created equal, and the one you're wearing now may not be offering you enough support. Check these out.

This is the Champion Action Sports Bra ($29.99) and it means business. Even though it looks like a real bra, underwire and all, it offers amazing support for someone with a C cup or smaller. The two padded cups support each individual breast, and the back closure allows you to adjust how tight you want it. Plus the material has wicking properties to help you stay dry.

Need a little more support? Then

Have you ever found out about a race you wanted to run the day after it happened?

This is why MarathonGuide.com was created. This awesome online database not only lists races all over the country, but it also provides insider information from folks who have run past races, race maps, and even the results for the previous year's races. You can sort the list of races by date, state or city – it is so easy to use. Having all this at your fingertips means you'll have ample time to train your legs. Happy running!

Learn to Love: Running at the Track

The expression "I am running around in circles" definitely has a negative connotation, but I am here to say that running around in circles, well ovals really, when at the track is something you should learn to love. Before you protest, let me list my reasons why I have come to love track workouts.

Body Health:

Be it a dirt or a composite track, the surface is much easier on your joints than unforgiving concrete sidewalks and even softer than more forgiving asphalt streets.

Warming up is easier at the track for me. I actually do a track warm up with a two lap combination of skipping, side to side grapevines, jogging and high knee lifts to warm up my hip flexors, followed by some stretching.

Safety:

Simply put – there are no cars on the track, so you don't have to worry about getting hit by an automobile. You can actually space out, crank your tunes, or really focus on your running stride and gait.

There is safety in numbers. Running alone before the sun comes up or after it goes down can be a bit risky. There are generally a handful of people running or walking at the lit tracks so you can worry less.

Oh, I am not done yet! To see the rest of my reasons,

Although running uphill is a serious challenge, it still provides so many benefits. There are also many ways to approach the incline. If you want to keep your pace consistent rather than focusing on maintaining a steady RPE (rate of perceived exertion), focus on your arms. In some feat of evolution, our arms and legs are wired to keep the same pace. If you pump your elbows back at the rate you want your feet to go, your legs will follow.

For me, as my legs start to feel heavy, I put all my energy into my arms. I can’t say it makes me float uphill, but it does somehow lessen the burden maybe because my arms are closer to my brain?

Try it next time you're running uphill; it really does help.

Spring Running Tip: Safety First

Now that the days are warmer and longer, it's a great time to take your runs outdoors. Be sure to always keep your safety in mind when running this Spring, especially when you're running alongside vehicles. Check out a few tips for running on the street or sidewalk:

Run with a buddy.

If you'll be running alone, make sure someone else knows that you're running along with your route and estimated duration.

If possible, try to run in familiar areas without a lot of vehicle traffic.

Wear sunscreen.

Before crossing streets in front of cars, make sure it's fully stopped and make eye contact with the driver to ensure they see you.

Injury Prevention: Strong Hips = Strong Knees

We all know that men and women are different, even in how we exercise. Add to those differences the fact that women are more likely to suffer knee injuries. The difference is structural; the width of our child bearing hips angles the thigh bone (femur) in such a way that it creates some laxity and instability in the knee joint. Not to mention the ebb and flow of hormones women experience monthly can affect knee stability too.

One way to protect your knees is to strengthen your hips, or anatomically speaking your glute med – the muscle that fills in the side of your pelvis (see an image of the muscle here). Having strong glute meds helps to control the thigh bone, which then helps to stabilize the knee joint. Sounds like a win/win situation to me.

To see how to strengthen your hips, just

A Little More on the Treadmill vs. Running Outside Debate

We all have personal preferences: dark chocolate over milk, red wine over white, running outside over running on a treadmill. Wait! I like both hitting the pavement in my sneakers and chalking up miles on a treadmill. And it looks like variety is a good thing when it comes to where you choose to run. You shouldn't really place yourself too strongly in either camp.

Running outside definitely has its benefits, like boosting your mood and making you feel more invigorated than running indoors. You also burn about five percent more calories when running outside. Which makes sense since you have to contend with the elements (like wind – oh how I hate running into a headwind!), and you don't have the assistance of the treadmill belt pulling your legs back for you. Studies have also shown that when running on treadmills, we tend to go a bit slower than we would on a track.

To see the benefits of running on a treadmill just

See Mommy Run: Mother's Day Runs!

Before you sit down to your Mother's Day brunch, go for a run with your children or mother. A mimosa tastes much better after running a 5k. I think it is important to run intergenerationally so your kids can see that you are physically active and strong. These fun runs are a great way to introduce your sedentary mother to walking/jogging/running. If you have a wee one, strap him or her into your jog stroller and hit the road.

Active.com has a great listing of Mother's Day races, making it easy to find a race or fun run near you. Join the fun and see mommy run!

What to Look For When Buying a Treadmill

Even though it's warm, you may not like exercising outside. Maybe your neighborhood isn't safe, you're worried about unhealthy sun exposure, or you have allergies. It's great to belong to a gym and use their equipment, but nothing beats the convenience and comfort of working out at home. If you're in the market for a new treadmill, Simpfit has some suggestions. Here are some things to consider:

Think about the motor. Ones with more power use less electricity, produce less heat, provide smoother movement, and also mean less wear and tear so the treadmill will last longer.

Think about the belt. Cheaper models have narrower belts, so if you're larger or have a hard time running in a straight line, you may want to think about splurging for one that has a wider belt. Also if you're taller, you may need a longer belt. Don't fall for ones that have "orthopedic belts." Your shoes offer enough cushion, and these treadmills may not last as long.

Look for a sturdy frame made out of durable material. Heavier ones that are welded (not bolted) will last the longest. It's even better if the manufacturer supplies a warranty against failure or corrosion.

Want to see what else you should keep in mind? Then

5 Things: Breaking in New Sneaks

Spring always inspires me to buy new fitness gear, so if you're like me, you probably picked up a new pair of sneakers. Here are some things to keep in mind when breaking them in.

Buy a new pair before your old ones start to fall apart. That way if you start to feel pain or a blister coming on, you can switch back to the pair you know and love. Continue alternating between your old and new sneakers until you gradually make the switch over to your new ones.

Start off with some lower impact activities to give your sneakers a chance to stretch out and mold to your feet. Don't just slip them on and continue with your regular running routine. Walk in them for while and then start running short distances. Gradually work your way up to longer runs.

Break in your new sneaks on the terrain you normally work out on. That means if you only run on a treadmill, break them in on a treadmill.

Always wear the same kinds of socks you'll be running in while breaking them in.

Be patient and keep in mind that it may take a month of workouts to get your sneakers to shape to your feet.

Fit Tip: On the inside of your sneaks, in permanent marker, write down the date you started wearing your new sneaks, so you'll know when it's time to buy some new ones.

Avoid Runner's Knee

If you are new to running you definitely want to be wary of developing runner's knee, an overuse injury that is twice as likely to occur in women than men. Known in the medical world as patellofemoral pain syndrome (PPFS), runner's knee causes pain in and around the knee cap (or patella). The pain is caused by tracking issues with the knee cap that irritate the bony groove the knee cap actually sits in. While there can be many reasons for this annoying and common problem that most often strikes newbies, it is most often caused by tight hamstrings and calves (the muscles in the back of the leg) coupled with weak quads (the muscle at the front of the thigh).

You don't need to avoid running to prevent runner's knee, but you should try to run on accommodating surfaces like dirt paths and asphalt, not concrete. Uneven terrain and hills can aggravate knee tracking problems, so be wary of hills if you are experiencing tenderness around your knee caps. Be proactive and strengthen your quads. And to see how, just

If You Run You Need to Lift Too

You all know that I believe in a well-balanced workout regimen with both cardio and strength training. I must confess that when I am training for an endurance event, I tend to skimp on the strength training and sometimes due to poor or over scheduling (the kids need to get to swim class or we have run out of milk, bread, and eggs all on the same day) I am forced to skip it all together. Professor of Kinesiology William Kraemer, Ph.D., reminds us that this is not a good idea; you need to keep on using the weights!

Running, when done for periods of time over 30 to 45 minutes can actually break down muscle. This happens when the glycogen stores (aka muscle fuel) is depleted and the body looks for other sources of fuel sometimes scavenging muscles for energy. Aside from properly fueling (like sipping a sports drink every 10 to 5 minutes) yourself on long runs and rides, you need to rebuild muscle with strength training. Kraemer suggests 60 minutes to 90 minutes a week, which I find can be hard to fit in. I try to fit in squats and wall sits (during TV commercials) whenever I can as well as focused strength-training workouts even if they are short.

Are You Cheating on Running?

Some of us have a love/hate relationship with running. Although it is the most accessible form of cardio since all you need is shoes, if that, but getting out the door to run can be quite a challenge. Sugar user megmccoy found this video that asks an important question — are you cheating on running?
