Gear Review: Zoom Sister One+ by Nike

Earlier this Fall, I was invited to attend a Women's Media Summit at Nike HQ to learn about their new training shoe for women, the Zoom Sister One+ ($110). After treating all the attendees to a killer workout designed to show off the flexible features of the Sister One (I was sore for days), they sent me home with a pair of shoes to experiment with on my own. I've been wearing them for a few months now for my strength training sessions and when I use the elliptical. I feel I have thoroughly tested this shoe, and I can tell you it is pretty great.

Not only is the Zoom Sister One+ cute, but it so lightweight and flexible that I feel like dancing around after lacing them up. I am no longer plodding through my lunges, but dancing a duet with my dumbbells. The shoes make me feel nimble and ready for action. These shoes are a hybrid of the Nike Free barefoot running technology and the ultra lightweight Nike Flywire that debuted at the Olympics this Summer. The end result is your feet can truly sense the ground. And like we teach in Pilates and yoga, your feet making contact with the floor starts the muscular chain of command, so the chances of the correct muscle pattern happening are considerably higher. This means more effective and efficient training. When you do squats in the Sister One+ you don't have to think about pressing through your heels because in these shoes your weight is already there. The shoe moves in all three planes of motion, so if you are twisting and lunging the shoe moves with you instead of breaking the motion. They feel great for kickboxing when you pivot while throwing a punch with your entire body.

I Just Did It: Nike Women's Media Summit

Did you know that 18 months of research goes into each pair of athletic shoes with a swoosh? I had no idea about the science behind sneakers until I visited Nike Corporate HQ in Beaverton, OR, just outside of Portland. Nike hosted a Women's Media Summit event to introduce its new cutting-edge (and when I say cutting, I literally mean "cutting" like what one does on the basketball court to quickly change directions) shoe, the Sister One.

This event, where Nike treated a bunch of fitness and design writers to a two-day seminar (workouts included), will be the closest I get to feeling like a Nike-sponsored athlete. I did get meet of few inspirational Nike-sponsored female athletes that I have seen tear it up on the field and court. The six athletes we met were all beautiful; they radiated health and fitness as they were interviewed. Learn from my mistake and know that you never ask a woman in soccer about the health of her knees. Olympian soccer forward Carli Lloyd, who scored the gold-winning goal at Bejing, and Olympic goalie Hope Solo schooled me on that gaffe. I guess it is superstition.

I also learned that hoops player and two-time gold medalist Sue Bird doesn't want to play ball in a "whack looking shoe." If this point guard doesn't like the look of her kicks, she has trouble playing ball. Kinda like a sporty spin on "your are what you eat," but more "you play what you wear."

Run Like a Girl: Nike+ Women's Half Marathon

Gear Review: Nike Women's Gym Club Bag

I am always on the market for a new gym bag, especially since I'm not so easy on my bags and I go through them fast. I recently got my hands on the Nike Gym Club Bag ($55) and was immediately drawn to its bright colors. But this is more than just a pretty sack, it's extremely handy, too.

My favorite part about the bag is that it's large enough to fit all my gym gear (that's including my sneakers) and my lunch. Grossed out that I am mixing my sneakers with my lunch? Don't be. This bag has a drawstring shoe compartment, which keeps your smelly sneaks away from everything else you're toting around. There is also a pocket for your water bottle and a one of the internal pockets is super soft of the inside, which makes for a great place to store your jewelry while you're sweating your butt off. Another great feature is that along with the two fixed tote-bag straps, the bag comes with a detachable padded-shoulder strap so you can choose how you want to carry it.

I've been using this tote for a while now and the only drawback I can think of is that it's so roomy that I tend to over stuff it, leaving it quite heavy, but I can't really blame the bag for that now can I? Want one for yourself? Buy it from Nike.com.

New iPod Touch Has Nike+ Integration!

If you're like me, you use your iPod mostly when you exercise — I can't live without my tunes when I run. I'm also a religious Nike+ Sports Kit user, the device that snaps into my iPod and tells me how fast I'm running, how far I've run, and how many calories I've burned. It's a wonderful motivator that allows me to keep track of my workouts, but you know, it's tough to keep track of the little one-inch receiver! I've lost two already and have to keep re-buying them. Now I don't have to worry because the new iPod touch (unveiled yesterday) has the Nike+ receiver integrated inside (the first generation iPod touch doesn't, and neither does the iPhone). No receiver to plug in means you don't have to worry about losing it. You still have to wear the sensor that fits in or on your shoe, but I can deal with that. You can get an 8GB iPod for $229, 16GB for $299, and 32GB for $399. It's definitely on my wish list.

Have you heard? Tennis is trendy. Ticket sales are up for the US Open, and participation in the sport increased 18.7 percent last year. As a result, sales of tennis clothes are also on the rise. In the US, tennis apparel rung up $294.6 million in sales last year; Reebok's US tennis revenue alone is up 62 percent!

I certainly can't blame shoppers for snatching up cute clothes for one of the most fashionable sports. The Top Running Shoes Revealed

Product rating powerhouse Consumer Reports has tested 205 pairs of men's and women's running shoes in an effort to find the best. Overall they found that the Nike Air Zoom Vomero+2 (pictured here) was the best running shoe for men ($120) and women ($120). Not only does it have excellent cushioning, but it also was praised for its quality fit. Unfortunately, like most running sneaks, the price tag is a little steep.

If that's a little too pricey for you right now, the Champion Wonder C9 ($28) was the most cost effective woman's running sneaker that made number 23 on the list — the shoe scored high points for being lightweight and flexible. What's more? You can buy it at Target!

Nike+ Human Race: One Day, One Race, One Million Runners

So you run and aren't quite ready to tackle a marathon, but are looking for a race to run. Have I got an event for you. You can participate in the largest, most unique worldwide 10K race — the Nike+ Human Race. It takes place on August 31, 2008, and there are two ways you can run. Either sign up to run in one of the 25 designated race cities including New York City, Los Angeles, Paris, Madrid, or London. Or you can opt to run wherever you are — on a treadmill, on the road, or in the woods. Just track your "race" using either the Nike+ iPod Sports Kit (if you like to run while listening to your iPod nano), or with the Nike+ SportBand (if you don't have a nano). After the race, connect either your nano or the SportBand to your computer to upload your race data to the NikePlus.com website.

Nike+ Gym Equipment Coming to a 24-Hour Fitness Near You

In March, Nike and Apple announced they were working to integrate their Nike + iPod system with cardio equipment. The idea being that you could hop on a treadmill, elliptical, stair stepper, or stationary bike, track, and record your workouts in the same way that the Nike+ Sports Kit for the iPod works. The largest chain of gyms in the US, 24-Hour Fitness, just announced that in July, they'll be the first to offer this new Nike+ iPod compatible gym equipment. You'll see them in gyms located in New York, San Francisco, Miami, Denver, Portland, and Salt Lake City.

This is great news for people who love to mix up their cardio routines and want to know exactly how many miles they've gone and and how many calories they've burned. They'll be able to upload their data to the NikePlus.com website to keep track of all their workouts. Hopefully, in the near future other gyms will offer these NIke+ iPod compatible cardio machines, too.

Get in Gear: Nike + SportBand

I've made no secret of my love for the Nike + iPod Sports Kit, which lets you track your time, distance, pace, and calories using your Apple iPod and special shoe sensors. So I'm psyched that Nike is expanding the line later this month, with a new product called the Nike+ SportBand.

According to Gizmodo, the gadget could be released as early as next week. This wearable wristband lets you circumvent the iPod if you want, because it communicates directly with your shoe sensors. Your progress is displayed on a screen on the wristband rather than on the iPod, which is ideal for people who don't like to run with iPods but still want to track calories burned and other data. The gadget also has a USB connection, so you can upload your data to the Nike website to see how far you've come.

Nike + iPod Meets Gym Equipment

If you're into walking or running, the Nike + iPod Sports Kit is a must. The sensor fits in your shoe and the receiver clicks into your iPod Nano. It keeps track of your distance, speed, and calories burned and stores all your data online with a quick synch. Now I'm happy to announce that Nike and Apple are teaming up with health clubs and fitness equipment brands like Life Fitness, Precor, Star Trac, and Technogym to make their cardio machines Nike + iPod friendly. Pretty cool, huh?

Since I showed you an ad campaign that I was not really fond of, I wanted to now show you one that I really enjoyed from Nike.

I literally laughed out loud when he said, "I feel bloated," as I have definitely used this one around that time of the month. I love this commercial for so many reasons but mainly because it reiterates how excuses are just that, excuses.

Stay Motivated: Challenge a Friend to 100 Miles

Since we all could use a little motivation to get us to exercise especially in Winter, why not bring a little friendly competition into the mix? Challenge a fitness buddy to do 100 miles of exercise in eight weeks. That works out to be 12.5 miles per week, which is totally doable if you exercise 4–5 times a week, and put in three miles each time.

Work out together or apart, just get those miles logged! Don't have to limit the competition to just running. Walking, cycling, swimming, or using exercise machines like the Elliptical or rowing machine count, too. You can keep track of your miles per day and agree on a date to reach the 100 mile goal. Also decide on a way to celebrate. Maybe you treat each other to a massage or manicure — something that motivates you to keep racking up those miles.

Fit's Tips: If you have an iPod nano and the Nike+ Sports Kit, you can go on Nikeplus.com and challenge a friend for 100 miles. After every workout you complete, just plug the nano into your computer and your data gets uploaded and stored on the website. You can check each other's progress and even send each other messages. When you reach your goal, you even get a little award that goes in your "trophy case."

Hayden Panettiere looking super cute leaving the gym recently. I am loving her youthful and fun workout gear (much brighter than my all my black clothes). I may feel inspired to brighten it up a bit, besides the winter is dark enough as it is why not brighten it up?

Me, I could never hit the gym in terry cloth (I sweat way to much, they would weight 100 pounds by the end), but one of my good friends only works out in her terry cloth pants and loves it. The Nike Shox Sneakers are a fabulous running shoe made with cushioning, stability and traction in mind (I live in mine). Her Under Armour tank is made with HeatGear technologies designed to keep you dry on the sweatiest of gym days, plus I love the two tones. While the tank does have a built in bra, think about adding a sports bra as Hayden did for added support.

Dear Fit,
I am interested in possibly getting an iPod or something similar to use when I work out. I never jumped on the whole iPod train in the first place because the idea of having to pick out songs doesn't appeal to me, since I don't really know what to pick. That's why I like Sirius satellite radio. It exposes me to new music and I don't have to do anything but turn it on. I'd definitely get an iPod to work out with IF there was some sort easy way to download suggested playlists for working out.

I am in love with the Nike + iPod Sports Kit. It comes with a receiver that attaches to your iPod nano, and a sensor that fits into your Nike sneakers. It allows you to keep track of the time, distance and calories burned during each of your workouts. You can even send your data to NikePlus.com, where it stores all your workouts and allows you to set personal goals. The only bad thing is you have to use the Nike Sneaks that are specially designed to hold the little sensor.

What if you don't like Nike sneakers because you've always been a New Balance girl? No problem. You can still use the Nike + iPod Sports Kit with your favorite sneakers. You just need to purchase a separate holder that attaches to your shoe.

I just found this one called the Shoe Pouch ($9.95). It's made of neoprene and has little loops that you slip your shoelaces through, so it fits snug against your shoe and stays put. The sensor fits inside the slit in the back of the pouch, and even has a Velcro closure to keep it extra secure.

Fit's Tips: If you run and walk in the rain or in wet areas, you may want to consider getting the RunAway ($7.99) instead. Although it may be waterproof, it only slips over your laces (not through them), so it doesn't fit nearly as securely as the Shoe Pouch.

Get Your Butt in Gear: Nike Hooded Vest

This is the time of the year where I face a major dilemma during my outdoor exercise excursions, I am either too hot or too cold. The weather is not quite so cold that I need a hat and gloves, but it's chilly enough that I need a jacket. Once I get hot I have to tie it around my waist, guaranteed to have it fall at some point during my run.

One option that I have found to work well for me is to wear a hooded vest. This Nike Baby Fleece Vest ($40) is perfect for those times when a jacket is too much but a long sleeve is not enough. Once you start getting too hot, just pull the hood off your head, which should cool you down quite a bit. Get cold again? Then pull the hood back over your head. Simple. Your torso is kept warm, but your arms are free to breathe. The best part, you can layer away with no bulky jackets to tie around your waist.

I am starting to gear up for fall (figuratively and literally), so I have been on the hunt for a few layering items to add to my summer workout gear. It's not cool enough for hats and gloves yet, but for my nighttime runs, a few layers are always a good addition.

Sharapova's Red Nike Tennis Dress: Cool or NOT?

Maria Sharapova, defending U.S. Open champion, is one sharp dresser. Her red tennis dress for nighttime play (she has a different outfit dedicated for daytime play) seems more evening gown than tennis dress, to me. OK, so the tennis dress, designed by Nike, is a celebration of New York in functional fashion form. The bright red-flame color represents the Big Apple and the 600 Swarovski crystals are reminiscent of the Manhattan skyline. The back has three crystal buttons down the back, creating a keyhole effect - I don't think that has anything to do directly with NYC, it just looks cool. The functional element is the fabric and construction. The material is breathable wicking jersey constructed with a no-sew technique where seams bonded with heat and silicone instead of thread.Sharapova described the dress as simple and classy, which suits her taste since she doesn't like things that are "tacky." I am not sure I am convinced on the crystals and the color though. I don't know about you, but I think the over all look is a little more ice skating costume then tennis dress. I was never much into the color pink until I had 2 daughters! Now I love the color and it looks like Sugar users do too. Here's a few truly pink, truly fit items Sugar users have bookmarked as Fit Finds.

AngelGrl135 bookmarked these pink sneaks by Nike and says "Shox are the perfect running shoe." It looks like LegalEaglet and ina717 both appreciate the unique style of lululemon workout wear.

When it comes to working out at the pool, I like to be a little more covered up than I would normally be if I were just hanging out at the pool. These days, I am always looking for a cute pair of running shorts. I have been loving wearing the gym class-esque shorts while working out and apparently Jessica Simpson is too.

Remember I told you about running barefoot? If you like the idea of your feet being more in control, but are worried about the pain, dirtiness, or risk of injury from running with no sneakers on, you'll love this.

Nike has a sneaker line called Nike Free that's meant to give the user an experience similar to running barefoot. These sneaks have more flexibility, breathability, and a better grip on the ground, so your feet can do more of the work.

They make 3 levels, and you work your way up, increasing your foot strength with each level.

Nike 7.0 - Beginning foot strength training: This is like a regular sneaker, but you'll notice something new - increased flexibility, a more naturally stable feel, and a little better sense of what's going on underneath you. Plus the midsole is lower, so you're closer to the ground.

Nike 5.0 - Increased foot strength training: You'll be able to point your toes and have dancer-like agility when it comes to moving and changing directions. It still offers cushioning for your feet, but the increased flexibility allows every part of your foot to move, which will increase your strength.

I was checking out the nikewomen.com website, after coming across a Fit Find by sugar user Nicolesidl of their Dance Hall video. Watch the music video first, and then you can learn all their dance/cardio moves as they break down the technique.

The Nike workouts include more than just the Dance Hall workout, which was created by Jaime King. In this workout, you'll learn dance moves that burn calories while strengthening your legs and your core. Plus it's like a dance party in your house.

Music is definitely a motivator. I love cranking up my iPod and running to the beat of my favorite play list. Yep, the music keeps me moving.

What I am not a fan of is the headphones that came with my iPod. They always fall out of my ears when I am out running. Thankfully Nike has come up with a comfy alternative, the Vapor Headphones. They have an adjustable hinge so the headphones fit snug against the back of your ear and they stay put.

I also like that they're lightweight and waterproof, so you can sweat up a storm or run in rain without worrying about ruining your headphones. They come in white or black, and have a wire extension if you need them to be longer.

I loved the idea of Nike's armband for the iPod nano - it was great to use while exercising - but you couldn't see the screen, which was kind of annoying. Other people must have complained too because Nike solved the problem.

Recently I've been running outside in my cute gym style shorts, but the problem is that pocket space is limited or nonexistent. Running without any form of ID, house key and a little cash are totally out of the question for me so I went on a hunt for a small wallet to use while working out.

Nike's Running Wallet ($8.00) is a great option. The wallet simply clips onto the tongue of your sneakers and if you're worried about it being secure enough, you can tie your laces over the wallet. This little wallet is small enough for cash and keys and while an ID would not fit inside (nor would bank cards), there is a space on the clip to write your contact information. Dealing with your "girls" while you workout can be such an ordeal. Not all sports bras are created equal, and some women have to wear 2 at one time!

Check out the Revolutionary Support Bra from Nike. It's light-weight, comfortable, and keeps your "girls" close to your heart. Plus, for a sports bra it is kind of attractive and looks rather bad ass, I might add.

When I think of a tennis competition I think of the quiet crowd and the Wimbledon line judges calling all the ladies "Miss." I do not think Disruptive. That is the name of the spring tennis collection by Serena Williams for Nike.

This modern tennis dress is made from a combination of Nike's Dri-FIT fabric and engineered mesh to regulate your body temperature. You look hot, but your body stays cool. It also has a built in support bra and you know I love not having to look for support.

It comes in Obsidian with Orchid Mist and College Orange accents (pictured here) or Radiant Green with Sonic Green and Tomatillo accents (I am always entertained by the names of colors these days).

Buy it directly from Nike for $100. At that price I am not sure I would want to sweat in it, but I would also wear this dress around town so I am thinking it is worth it.
