Healthy Eating Tip: Don't Salt the Pot

Has this ever happened to you? When cooking up a big pot of soup, you add salt to enhance the flavor. When you taste a spoonful, you can't even taste it, so you keep sprinkling more and more salt into the pot. In doing so, you can end up adding huge amounts of sodium without realizing it. When you finally pour yourself a bowl, you don't really know how much salt you're actually eating. Next time you put the pot on the stove to start a soup, I suggest not salting the entire pot of soup. Instead, after ladling out individual servings, allow your family or dinner guests to salt their own soup. Everyone will be able to monitor their salt intake more precisely, and I find you're able to taste the salt and other flavors more. You can also reduce the need for salt by flavoring your soups with fresh herbs, spices, and garnishes like Italian parsley.

Healthy Eating Tip: Eating in Groups

Thanksgiving is a gluttonous holiday, and when sharing a table with others it is easy to lose your moderate ways and over indulge in a foodie version of keeping up with the Joneses. I am here to remind you to stick to your guns and remember your willpower. I have a few tricks to share, just in case you feel yourself succumbing to the chow down peer pressure.

Sit next to the slowest eater at the table and match that person’s pace. Put your fork down when they put their fork down. Eating slower will not only aid your digestion, but you will feel full after about 20 minutes of eating and eat less in the time period.

Aim to be the last person to finish eating, just like when you were a kid and you wanted your ice cream cone to last the longest so you could taunt your siblings.

Always keep some food on your plate so when the hostess tries to push seconds on you, you can say you're not done with your first helping.

Remember to enjoy yourself, but don't let the spirit of the group gorge take over.

Healthy Eating Tip: Try a New Veggie

When it comes to buying veggies, don't get stuck in a rut. Every week most of us buy familiar veggies like carrots, lettuce, cucumbers, and tomatoes. But there are so many fruits and veggies out there, so why not mix it up a little and buy something new?

Next time you shop, put a veggie you've never tried into your cart such as okra, sunburst squash, turnips, or a new kind of Winter squash such as Kabocha. Searching out new produce is a way to shop seasonally as well. Your new selections may be quite unfamiliar, so ask some friends for ideas on how to cook them, or look on the Internet for unique recipes. Not only will it make one of your meals more exciting for your tastebuds, but a new veggie also offers different vitamins and minerals. Tell me, what veggie have you never tried that you're inspired to pick up this week?

Healthy Eating Tip: Veggies For Crackers

Party season is coming, which means appetizers and lots of them. One way to turn many finger foods into a health food fest is substituting veggies and fruits for crackers, chips, and bread. If you're hosting a party, I suggest experimenting with your standard cheese and crackers hors d’oeuvres and try putting some produce into the mix. Fruit slices pair well with so many cheeses, and crudités are great for dipping into all kinds of sauces and spreads.

Here are a few of my suggestions for substituting produce for crackers. How to top these fruits and veggies is up to you:

Red pepper triangles

Pear slices

Apple slices

I have a few more suggestions so

Healthy Eating Tip: Add Fruit Slices to Sandwiches

In my opinion, a well-made sandwich should have a little bit of all the major food groups. Generally, you end up with carbs, veggies, and protein, but don't forget that fruit is also an option for a healthy sandwich topping.

Mix it up. Bring new tastes and textures to your sammy by adding some fruit between your slices of bread. Sliced apple, pear, and grapes work really well, but I've also tried mandarin oranges, bananas, kiwi, and mango. Not only does the fruit add a hint of sweetness and distinct texture to a standard sandwich, but it also adds some always-needed extra fiber to your diet. This works with my girls, too. They love apple slices on their grilled cheese as much as I do.

Healthy Eating Tip: Text Your Food to DIET1

Deciding what you want to eat at a restaurant can be hard, especially when nutritional information is not easily accessible. In situations like this, just send a text message to DIET1 (34381). Include the restaurant and the menu item in your message, and the service will respond with a text containing the information you requested. I tried it out (several times) and it's really speedy, not to mention a little addictive. The database covers over 36,000 foods from 1,700 restaurants in North America, so try it out the next time you are dining out.

Until then, see how much you know without the help of your phone with this little calorie quiz on some of our favorite foods.

Healthy Eating Tip: Stop While You're Ahead

Do you tend to eat fast and until you are absolutely stuffed? If so, you might want to rethink your eating habits. A new study has found that people who eat quickly and until they're full are three times more likely to be overweight than those who don't.

Try to slow it down during your meals and snacks. Slowing down your eating process will give your brain the chance to realize that your stomach is filling up before you've already eaten the whole kitchen sink. Besides, it's not fun feeling absolutely stuffed, so you may even be saving yourself a bit of discomfort as well.

Healthy Eating Tip: Plate Your Veggies First

No matter the health issue, from losing weight to preventing cancer, we all should be eating more veggies. One simple way to accomplish this task is to stop thinking of veggies as garnish and plate them first.

Try to cover at least half of your plate with healthful side dishes featuring produce. I like to think of the meat as a side dish and my salad and steamed broccoli as the main dish. This mindset helps keep the portions in check and increases the amount of vegetables I eat daily. Ultimately, I find a well-balanced plate — 25 percent meat or protein, 25 percent whole grain carb, 50 percent veggies — leads to a well-balanced diet. Try it and see what you think.

Healthy Eating Tip: Saturdays Can Slow Weight Loss

If you're not losing weight as you expected, take a look at how you eat on Saturday.

Recent research has found that people on strict diet and exercise programs tend to lose weight more slowly than expected because they eat more on weekends, particularly on Saturdays, than during the week. In order to avoid this pitfall in your weight loss endeavors, it's important to plan for the weekends, just like you would plan for your week. If you know you are going to be out all day shopping, pack a healthy lunch to avoid the temptation of the food court. If you're going to be at the park with your kids, bring snacks for everyone so that you don't need to make an emergency stop at McDonald's.

Healthy Eating Tip: Cook Pasta in Green Tea

I was perusing the October issue of Shape and found an interesting tip in one of their dinner recipes. They suggested boiling your pasta noodles with bags of green tea. I thought it was a little odd at first, but then I read that it actually makes your pasta healthier because the noodles soak up the rich antioxidants from the tea. So I decided to give it a try, adding six green tea bags to six cups of boiling water. When I cooked my two and a half cups of whole wheat penne, the green tea added a subtle earthy flavor similar to spinach pasta. Give it a try the next time you make noodles and let me know what you think.

Healthy Eating Tip: Choose Cereals With Fiber

I think the easiest breakfast option in the world is a bowl of cereal. But just because it is an easy option, doesn't mean it has to be unhealthy. I like starting my day off with a cereal that is high in fiber; it helps keep me full and helps me reach the recommended 30 gram mark for daily intake of fiber. When shopping for cereal, go for ones made with whole grains that contain at least three grams of fiber per serving. Here are some great options:

Kashi Go Lean Crunch (8 g)

Nature's Path Optimum Power (10 g)

Barbara's Shredded Oats (4 g)

Barbara's Puffins (6.7 g)

Barbara's Ultima (16 g)

Fiber One (28.8 g)

Bear Naked Peanut Butter Granola (3 g)

Bear Naked Apple Cinnamon Granola (3 g)

Bear Naked Fit Triple Berry Crunch Granola (3 g)

Kashi Mountain Medley Granola (3 g)

Kashi Orchard Spice Granola (3 g)

Fit Tip: Increase the fiber content of your cereal by adding nuts and fresh, frozen, or dried fruit.

There's something about football season that brings big groups together. I love watching games with a group of friends, but it can do a number on my hard work at eating healthy. One thing I have realized is that it's difficult to keep track of how much I've eaten if I'm eating out of the same bowl, or bag, as my football buddies. While it's tempting to just keep taking from the communal snack bowls because everyone else is chowing down, that often leads to mindless eating and a whole lot of calories. Instead, place a reasonable portion on your own plate and limit yourself to that. This way you'll still be able to enjoy all the goodies and the game, but you won't be overeating the snacks.

Healthy Eating Tip: Give in to Your Cravings, Just a Little

Cravings happen to the best of us and they're hard to ignore. One of the best ways to get rid of a craving is to give in to your craving, but just a little. Allow yourself to indulge in a food every once in a while, and don't go overboard. In fact, CNN even reported that people who occasionally give in are able to manage their weight most successfully in the long run. So be sure to practice portion control, which means if you're craving chocolate, have a piece instead of the whole bar. If you're craving french fries, order a small instead of a large. If you're craving soda, have only a few sips. You get the idea, right?

Healthy Eating Tip: Have Your Produce Delivered

Sometimes it's hard to eat enough fruits and vegetables each day. Many of us would eat more produce if we had it right in front of us and this could not be more true for me. Over here at Sugar HQ, we have fruit delivered into the office and I know I eat more yummy fresh fruits (not to mention more of a variety) because of it. Inspired by this, I have decided to have produce delivered to my home as well. In my searches I stumbled on a fabulous list that Women's Health has already created of produce delivery businesses nationwide. Check it out. After all, having your produce delivered might help you stock up on healthy foods instead of the unhealthy ones.

Healthy Eating Tip: Drink Water First

How much water have you had today? The eight glasses a day theory has come under scrutiny, but we still need to stay hydrated, especially if we exercise and/or live in a hot, dry climate.

But there's another reason you want to keep hydrated; studies have found that folks who stay on top of their water intake actually consume fewer calories. This could be because sometimes we can confuse the feeling of dehydration with the feeling of hunger. So, in an effort to stay hydrated and keep your calories down, think about drinking a glass of water before your meals. You may find that you feel fuller faster, and if nothing else, it's a good way to guarantee you'll be drinking a few glasses of water a day.

Healthy Eating Tip: Freeze Overly Ripe Fruit For Smoothies

Summer, even as it's waning, puts me in the mood for fruit. I tend to overbuy or misjudge the appetites of my darling (read sometimes soooooo picky) daughters, so much of my tasty fruit tends to get overly ripe before I have a chance to eat it. If you can relate, save your about-to-spoil fruit by prewashing, peeling (if necessary), and dicing all your bananas, berries, peaches, kiwi, and melons. Place them in a plastic freezer bag so they're ready next time you want to make a smoothie for breakfast or a snack. Not only will this tip save you money and time, but it'll also encourage you to eat healthier. Plus, when fruit is frozen it tends to taste less sweet, but since overly ripe is extra sweet your smoothie will be as well.

Healthy Eating Tip: Start a Lunch Club

When you're trying to watch what you eat, brown-bagging it at work is a huge help. But let's face it: Not everyone has time to pack a lunch every night or morning before work. So why not start a lunch club at your office? It will help you eat better and encourage your co-workers to do the same.

Recruit a few of your officemates to join the club; anywhere from two to six members is a great start. Each week, assign each person to bring an ingredient for sandwiches or a smart salad. One person brings lettuce, or someone buys a loaf of bread, another member provides cold cuts, and so on. Then, every day, you can toss up a big salad to share, or let members make their own sandwiches with the provided ingredients.

If you want to get fancier, take more of a potluck approach. Have each person bring a different dish each day — anything from pasta salad to stir-fry — that everyone can eat for lunch. That way, each person only has to worry about lunch once a week.

Do any of you do this? If so, please do share your tips in the comments.

Source

Healthy Eating Tip: Remember What You Last Ate

We all know that keeping a food journal is one of the best ways to keep calories at bay on a daily basis. But for those of use who just aren't the journaling type, you may want to try a similar trick that requires a bit less effort.

Just write down the last thing you ate on a Post-it and stick it somewhere you'll see it the next time you reach for food (fridge, desk drawer, etc.). I tried this the other day and when I started to feel the need for a snack I saw my note that outlined my lunch, complete with the piece of butterscotch pie a Sugar staffer recently left in the kitchen. The sticky note was just enough to remind me that I am trying to be healthy and while it did not stop me from snacking, I did opt to eat an orange rather than another piece of pie. My need to snack was satisfied and so was I. Try it out and let me know how it works for you.

If you enjoy this, then you many want to move into full-on food journaling. I've got a free one you can download to get started today.

Healthy Eating Tip: Creamed Veggies Aren't as Healthy

We're all trying to figure out ways to pack in the most fruits and vegetables in a day, but going with the creamed veggies may not be the best choice. Creamed corn, spinach, and cream of mushroom soup may be delicious, but the extra cream can really take away from the healthy factor.

If possible, go with the pure form of the veggie. This way you're still getting the benefits of the vegetable without the the added calories, sugar, sodium, and saturated fat that often come along with creamed veggies. One serving of creamed spinach could pack a whopping 280 calories, while one cup of regular cooked spinach only has 41 calories. Just add a drop of olive oil and a squeeze of lemon juice, and fresh cooked spinach makes a super tasty and healthy side.

Healthy Eating Tip: Snack For Nutritional Gaps

Eating between meals, has definitely gotten a bad rap, but snacking can be good for you. Many nutritionist think we should eat at least every four to five hours. So if you eat lunch at noon and dinner at 8:00, you're going to need a snack to make it through the long afternoon. I like to plan my snacks, just like I would my lunch, and I like to use them to fill nutritional gaps.

When I feel I am not getting enough daily calcium, I snack on cheese sticks or yogurt. The protein fills me up and calcium helps my bones. If I feel like I am lacking in iron, I munch on some edamame and some red pepper. The vitamin C in the red pepper helps my body absorb the iron in those baby soybeans. Make your snacks do double duty. Your body, especially your belly, will appreciate your effort.

Healthy Eating Tip: Know Before You Go

I love eating out as much as the next girl. The problem is that I always head into a restaurant, deli or fast food joint with the healthiest intentions and often get derailed by the unhealthy options calling my name when I am deciding what I want. One way I avoid the temptation is by going in knowing what I want ahead of time. Many restaurants offer nutritional information online of their menu items, and for those that don't calorieking.com is a good resource. This way you can do the legwork before you even step into the restaurant. And when you do, it's a lot easier to keep your eye on the ball (aka, your health).

Healthy Eating Tip: Take a Three-Day Approach

I know we all strive to eat a balanced diet that's abundant with fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean proteins, but some days, that just doesn't happen. Maybe yesterday your co-worker brought in some homemade buttery scones topped with drizzles of icing. It's perfectly fine to enjoy foods like that, but just balance them out with other food choices you make later.

It doesn't have to be that day, but you can work on creating a balanced diet over three days. So if you missed a food group yesterday, be sure to include it today or tomorrow. If you eat a bunch of high fat foods one night, go for low fat foods the next. This approach is great so you don't feel pressured to eat healthy every minute of your life, and most importantly, you don't end up feeling deprived. It allows you to enjoy treats every so often, but encourages you to have a generally healthy diet.

Source

Healthy Eating Tip: Hit the Buffet

The buffet can be your friend or foe. It all depends on how you look at it. You can either load up your plate with piles of high fat, high calorie foods with little nutritional value or you can take advantage of the variety and opt to cover your plate with the abundance of healthy foods usually available on any given buffet.

When you have the option to choose, you can spend time to really make the healthier decisions than if you had to order a set meal. Also you're able to determine your own portion size, rather than be tempted with a gigantic meal. You can often choose all kinds of lean proteins as well as veggies and fruits. Just be sure to steer clear of foods that are fried, glistening with butter, and loaded with sugar. When in doubt, ask a server how a food item is prepared.

Healthy Eating Tip: Handle the Ladle With Care

Salad greens count as a superfood in my book, but salad dressings . . . not so much. The salad bar dressings we ladle on those greens are certainly tasty, but all that taste often comes at a high-caloric price. Cutting back on the dressing is important if you are also cutting back on calories.

Next time you visit a salad bar, pay attention to the size of the ladle, since they can vary widely and could hold anywhere from two to six tablespoons. The most common ladle size holds four tablespoons of dressing, which is equal to two standard servings, as listed on the food labels of salad dressing bottles (here's a salad dressing breakdown).

Lift the ladle out of the dressing and size it up before you fill it with dressing. A ladle the size of a ping-pong ball or a short shot glass will give you two tablespoons. If it’s bigger than that, make sure you only fill the ladle halfway before dressing your salad.

Healthy Eating Tip: Take 20 Each Meal

The body takes about 20 minutes to recognize it's full. This means if you scarf down your lunch or dinner in less than ten minutes, you may not realize that you've actually overeaten, and you're actually full, until it's already down the hatch. I know this is easier said than done, but do yourself a favor by trying to make each meal last at least 20 minutes. You may find that slowing down your eating habits could slow down how many calories you take in at every meal.

I timed myself today at lunch and I finished in seven minutes! I am definitely going to try to slow it down tomorrow. Do you already try and eat slower? Share your tips below.

Healthy Eating Tip: Store Precut Veggies in the Fridge

Who isn't trying to eat more veggies in their diet? All those carrots, peppers, cucumbers, broccoli, and tomatoes are so full of vitamins and fiber, and they're also low in calories so they help you maintain a healthy weight. The problem is, they're not exactly an easy convenience food since it takes time to prepare them. That means you'll be more likely to reach into a bag of chips rather than munch on some veggies.

Here's an idea. Once or twice a week, take 20 minutes to wash, cut, peel, and store a whole variety of veggies in plastic containers. Not only will they stay fresh, but they're instantly ready for sandwiches, stir-frys, grilling, casseroles, salads, or just to eat alone. I guarantee this will help you eat more vegetables throughout the week.

What veggies are in your fridge? Tell me below.

Healthy Eating Tip: Add Fruit to Your Cereal

I've been working really hard to get in my five-a-day and one of the easiest ways for me is with breakfast. Usually, I like to have a big bowl of cereal in the mornings and lately I've been buying tasty blueberries and raspberries and tossing them into my cereal. They're both in season and cheaper than usual. I know that a lot of people may already do this strictly for taste, but it's also a fabulous way to sneak in another serving (or two) of fruit into your day.

Do you have any sneaky ways to get in a few more servings of fruits and vegetables into your day?

Healthy Eating Tip: Non-Dairy Foods Can Be High in Calcium

Getting enough calcium is one of the main ways we can maintain strong healthy bones. It's recommended that healthy women get a daily intake of 1,000 mg of calcium. Since when one thinks of calcium we tend to think of milk and dairy products then non-dairy consuming folks may have a hard time reaching that number without supplementation.

If that's the case for you then you can still get your calcium while maintaining your non-dairy status and without popping a pill. In fact, here are some great non-dairy alternatives for getting calcium that may surprise you:

Sesame Seeds. One quarter cup of sesame seeds has 351 mg calcium.

Spinach. One cup of boiled spinach has 244 mg.

Collard Greens. One cup of collard greens has 226 mg.

Kelp. One cup of raw kelp has 136 mg.

Broccoli. One cup of steamed broccoli has 75 mg.

There are a few more ideas so

Vacation Eating Tip: Baked, Broiled, Grilled

I know many people feel that when they are on vacation they can eat whatever they want. But just like the credit card bill for all those personal indulgences, excessive calories stick around too. When ordering out on vacation, same as at home, you want to look for the key words "baked," "broiled," or "grilled." This means your lean protein (I am assuming that you will be ordering a lean protein like chicken or fish) and veggie side will not loaded with extra calories and fat. I know this tip seems obvious, but I am going to remind you: Avoid fried food. If your main dish is not so extravagant, then splitting a dessert might be an indulgence you can afford.

Fit's Tip: Since you are on vacation and not in a rush, why not walk to the restaurant or take a stroll after dinner?

Healthy Eating Tip: Eat Calcium For Dessert

Even when our willpower is at its peak performance, sweet treats after meals can be the hardest thing to give up. I don't know about you, but after a savory meal, I often crave just a tiny bite of dessert. If you're the same way, I have a tasty tip ensures that you get your RDI of calcium while satisfying your sweet tooth.

After dinner, eat a calcium chew, like the ones made by Viactiv. They taste just like candy — well, I guess they sort of are candy — but each piece has just 20 calories. They come in flavors such as chocolate, mint chocolate, and raspberry; my favorite is caramel, though I actually buy the Walgreens brand. One chew delivers 500 mg of calcium, which is half your RDI.

My only complaint is that they're made with corn syrup. But when the alternative is eating a sugary, high-fat candy bar or cookie, this calcium-rich treat is worth trying.

Source

Healthy Eating Tip: Salad Dos and Don'ts

In the warmer months of Spring and Summer I often opt for a cool crisp salad for lunch. If you find yourself eating more and more salads as the weather gets warmer and warmer, then use these salad bar tips for the dos and don'ts of keeping that salad easy on your waistline.

Do make your own salad (if possible).
Don't think that the pre-made salads are always going to be healthy.

Do get the darker leaf greens, like spinach, romaine, or arugula.
Don't fill your bowl with Iceberg lettuce — it offers little to nothing nutritionally.

Do load up on fresh veggies.
Don't load up on grilled veggies — grilled veggies at a salad bar are often coated with butter and oil.

I've got more tips for keeping a salad healthy so

Diet Tip: Choose Wet Snacks

I know it is easy to reach for chips, crackers or pretzels when you're experiencing a snack attack. Those crunchy carbs are easy to find. But here's a habit to try on for size, go out of your way to find a "wet" snack.

Foods rich in water tend to pack fewer calories into bigger servings and come with added fiber. I am thinking cucumbers, apples, bell peppers, celery or to go really wet, broth based (not cream, mind you) soups. These are known as nutrient dense because the ratio of nutrients to calories is high. Dry snacks, like granola bars, tend to be calorie dense and a snack of just carbs will generally end up making you hungry again soon.

Remember, when snacking it is good to have at least two of the macro nutrients, carbs, protein, and fat, on your plate. I like to crunch into a juicy (read wet) apple and to pair my fruit with a handful of nuts.

What is your favorite wet snack? Do share in the comments section below.

Healthy Eating Tip: Pack Meals For Long Days in the Office

We've all pulled a late night at the office. Sometimes late hours can creep up on us with no warning and other times we leave the house in the morning knowing that it's going to be a long day. For the latter, just like you would pack yourself a healthy lunch, pack yourself a healthy dinner. When I am working late and we order food here at Sugar HQ, it tends not to be the most healthy foods — think pizza, and even McDonalds, ack!
On the occasional late night, I've also tried waiting until I got home to eat but that just leaves me starving. The probability of making smart food choices is highly unlikely at that point.

Not only does having a nutritious meal give me the energy I need to get things done so I can get out of there, I'm not left wondering how many unnecessary calories I just inhaled. So next time you know you may be staying late, bring yourself something healthy to eat for lunch and dinner.

Healthy Eating Tip: Eat a Rainbow

Are you sticking to foods that are mostly white like bread and pasta? Or are you chowing down on a lot of orange foods such as carrots and sweet potatoes? When it comes to eating a balanced diet full of nutrients, don't just stick to one color. Every day try to eat an array of foods that are from all the colors of the rainbow. Get creative and add splashes of color to the foods you already love. Throw in some peas and mushrooms into your pasta sauce, add corn and red peppers to your black-bean soup or top your pizza with broccoli. Not only will you be getting extra vitamins and minerals, but it's a great way to prevent boredom in your diet.

Healthy Eating Tip: Wash Produce You're Going to Peel

You're probably already eating a good amount of fruits and vegetables but are you washing them all? I recently went to eat a banana and someone said, "Aren't you going to wash that first?" I thought, well no because I am going to peel it. But should I? So I did a little investigative work and here is what I found out: you should wash all fruits and vegetables, even those that you only eat the inside of, like bananas, kiwis, mangos, etc. Imagine how many hands and things touch the fruit before it actually gets to your mouth. Your hands could pick up the bacteria on the unwashed peel and transfer it onto the part you eat. This goes for all fruits and vegetables that you may peel before eating, so why not wash them first? It only takes a few seconds.

Do you already wash produce you're going to peel or not eat the skins of?

Healthy Eating Tip: Pack Salad For the Week

Are you struggling with eating healthy at lunchtime? I know if I don't plan out a healthy meal the night before, I'll end up going out to lunch. Not only will I be spending more money on food, but I am sure there a hidden calories in restaurant foods, even if they appear healthy.

Try this instead. On Sunday night, make a big salad and store it in five Tupperware containers for Monday through Friday. That way you don't have to deal with making your lunch every day, and you can just grab it in the morning before you leave, and you know you've got yourself a healthy meal. You can add leftovers from your dinner the night before to your salad to make it a bit more snappy. Don't toss those four leftover pieces of steamed broccoli; add them to your salad.

Keeping a bottle of salad dressing in the work fridge helps keep this plan intact. Need some ideas for fun and tasty salads? Check out Pimp Your Greens.

Healthy Eating Tip: Three Is the Magic Number

When it comes to eating healthy, you don't always need to limit yourself. In fact, you really shouldn't limit yourself to just one food at meal times. You should aim to eat three different types of foods at each meal, and not just any food but three nutritionally dense foods. You know, foods that provide the most nutrients with the least amount of calories.

I think this is a great way to eat but find this concept most difficult to follow at breakfast; I have been working on it. I have a whole wheat waffle with yogurt and half a grapefruit. I am eating three different foods and getting some fiber, calcium, protein and vitamin C. For lunch, similarly don't just have an all lettuce salad — add some protein and some cheese or a whole grain roll. Adding a variety of foods to each meal will help cover some gaps in your nutrition.

Healthy Eating Tip: Eat Closer to the Earth

Looking for some guidelines to follow while creating healthy eating habits? Here’s a good rule of thumb that is easy to follow: go with the least processed version of the food. For example, eat real green beans not those puffed, dried, green veggie chips. If you’re craving carbs have a baked potato (eat the skin!) instead of French fries. If you’re hankering for red meat, go with a lean cut like flank steak rather than a fast food hamburger. Or, if your desire is citrus, go with an actual orange over orange juice, but opt for orange juice over an orange flavored sports drink. It helps to shop the perimeter of your grocery store, because that is where the fresh food is located. This way you will be avoiding processed food and all their unhealthy added ingredients, especially the sodium.

One dietician explains this as eating “closer to the earth.” Although it might take a little more work to peel an orange over twisting the top off a sports drink, it is much healthier in the long run.

Healthy Eating Tip: Skip the Dressing and Add Fruit to Your Salad

We all know that eating salad is good for us since fresh veggies are so healthy and full of fiber. I've realized though that I tend to add a lot of dressing to make my salad flavorful, which can add tons of calories. So instead of pouring on the dressing, top your salad with fruit.

Pears and apples are pretty popular, but I also love watermelon, cherries, grapes, pineapple, strawberries, or grapefruit on my salad. It may sound a little weird at first, but the sweetness goes really well with the crispness of the salad. You can also add dried fruit too like dried cranberries, cherries, or chopped up apricots. Your salad will have so much flavor that you won't be missing that dressing one bit. Do you already like to add fruit to your salad?

Healthy Eating Tip: Add Color to Your List

Next time you're making your grocery shopping list, one way to make sure you're getting a good amount of fruits and vegetables is by writing the colors of the rainbow on your list. Last weekend I wrote down all the colors (well I used blue/purple instead of blue, violet, and indigo) to my list and made sure I got at least two fruits or vegetables that fit into the color category before I could cross it off. It was not as easy as it sounds, but here are a few examples for your next shopping trip:

Red: Red peppers, Strawberries, Tomatoes
Orange: Oranges, Tangerines, Pumpkin
Yellow: Bananas, Squash, Lemons
Green: Leafy green vegetables, Zucchini, Apples
Purple/Blue: Pomegranate, Eggplant, Grapes, Plums, Blueberries

Obviously that is not all of them, but just a few ideas to get you started. So try it out. Having a preset list helps you shop healthy and having preset colors within the list forces you to eat a wide variety of fruits and veggies.

Healthy Eating Tip: Find Healthier Alternatives

Even if you're trying to lose a few pounds or stick to your health kick, I don't recommend ever giving up the foods you love. Moderation works for me (most of the time), but when I can't hold myself back from devouring more than just a few tasty bites, I try to make or find healthier alternatives. Here are some of my favorites. If you have healthy alternatives to the foods you crave, please share them in the comment section below.

Craving This?

Try this Instead

Ice cream

Frozen yogurt, soy ice cream, or chocolate sorbet

Candy bar (Snickers, Kit Kat)

A piece of dark chocolate with a handful of almonds

Pizza

Choose ones made with thin crust (for less carbs) or make your own using lowfat cheese and grilled veggies. Or try a pizza salad.

Chewy candy (skittles, sour patch kids)

Dried Fruit or trail mix

Peanut butter cookie

Peanut butter on a whole grain cracker, topped with a drizzle of honey

Chocolate mousse or fudge

Make your own chocolate pudding with nonfat milk

Apple pie

Baked apple

Banana cream pie

Halve a banana lengthwise and top with 1 tbsp chocolate chips

French Fries with ketchup

Bake or grill regular or sweet potatoes instead, and flavor with fresh rosemary

Do you have a healthy alternative you rely on when craving something crazy? Share it in the comments section below.

Healthy Eating Tip: Sit Down and Eat Breakfast

I always eat breakfast. The thing is that I eat it while doing about a million other things and then when all is said and done I don't really feel like I've eaten breakfast at all. Recently I've been trying to actually give myself five minutes each morning to sit down and eat — I do this at lunch and dinner, why not breakfast too? This way I can take a step back and focus on my upcoming day and enjoy my meal. An added bonus is that once I get into the office I feel satisfied and don't need to scavenge on whatever morning treat is waiting in the kitchen here at Sugar HQ.

This is way easier said than done, by the way, but if you find yourself starving by the time you get to work even though you already ate then you may want to give it a try.

Healthy Eating Tip: Steam It

Not only does steaming have both a short cooking and preparation time, but you also get cooked veggies without using a drop of butter or oil. What's more? Unlike boiling veggies where the nutrients seep into the water that you eventually dump out, steaming them allows them to retain most of their nutrients since the food never actually touches the water. Add some spices and a splash of citrus and you've got yourself a tasty side. Me? I always steam broccoli and squeeze some fresh lemon juice over it.

Healthy Eating Tip: Add Beans to the Food You Eat

Beans, beans, good for the heart . . . Ahh yes they are, because they're great sources of protein and fiber. Protein gives us energy, is necessary to build healthy hair and nails, it's an important building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin and blood, and your body also uses protein to make hormones. Fiber is necessary to keep us regular, plus it helps to lower cholesterol, and prevent certain types of cancer.

Since beans contain both fiber and protein, you should try to eat them as often as you can. If your body isn't used to eating beans, sitting down for a big bowl of chili isn't necessarily going to do your belly any good. You could end up feeling bloated and uncomfortable, and swear off beans for good.

Instead of chowing down on an entire meal of beans, add them to the foods you already eat. Sprinkle some chickpeas and kidney beans on your salad, drop some black or cannellini beans into your soup or casserole recipes, add some black eyed peas to your pasta sauce. Get creative. I guarantee that the extra protein and fiber will have you feeling amazing.

Fit's Tips: Since you aren't going to be using a whole can of beans, store the leftovers in a plastic container in the fridge so they'll be easily accessible when you want to add a few spoonfuls to your next meal.

Healthy Eating Tip: Hara Hachi Bu

In a recent report on longevity the Japanese island of Okinawa was extolled as one extremely healthy place to live and age. Aside from having an elderly friendly culture and an exceptional diet (lots of fish, soy and a colorful array of veggies), Okinawans follow the philosophy of hara hachi bu, meaning eat until you're only 80 percent full. A little different from the stuff yourself silly mentality behind those all you can eat buffets.

Typically, Okinawans eat about 1200 calories a day, which is about 20 percent less than the average Briton. Interesting figure don't ya think? I think it is a great way to eat and reminds me of advice a yoga teacher gave me a good long while ago. Eat just enough so you can practice yoga after your meal. That is, eat so you have enough energy to practice but not so much that practicing yoga would be uncomfortable.

Try it at your next couple of meals. Of course this requires eating mindfully as well, which is another healthful eating practice.

Frozen Spinach Does the Body Good

The canned spinach that made Popeye's muscles go crazy was probably loaded with sodium and ultimately not the best method for eating this super green, leafy veggie. On the other hand, frozen spinach might just be more nutritious than fresh. The nutritional benefits of spinach start to breakdown after the leafy green is picked. In fact, four days in your crisper can reduce the amount of beneficial nutrients health-boosting carotenoids and the folate (a B vitamin) in spinach. Yep, even if you refrigerate this veggie, it can still lose its nutritional value. For this reason it is a great idea to use frozen spinach. It is generally processed immediately after being picked, locking in the nutrients. This is a great option if fresh spinach is scarce or really expensive. Check out this recipe for Tomatoes Stuffed With Spinach and Ham, which conveniently uses frozen spinach!

Fit's Tip: Remember, it is recommend that you eat at least five servings of fruit and vegetables daily — fresh or frozen. So if the fresh produce at the grocery looks old and depleted, experiment with using frozen veggies or fruit. Frozen fruit is a great addition to any smoothie.

Is there a frozen veggie or fruit that you use regularly? Share the details in the comment section below.

Healthy Eating Tip: Use These Instead of Salt

Are you one of those people who has to add a dash of salt to all your food? Since many of the foods we eat are loaded with sodium, especially premade ones, adding more salt to your meals can cause you to surpass the daily recommended amount in a flash. I'm a huge salt fan myself, so I understand your love affair with this tasty, white stuff, but why not add flavor to your foods instead? Try these instead of salt:

Squeeze of fresh lemon juice (I always keep lemons in the fridge)

Chopped fresh herbs, such as rosemary, cilantro, oregano, and basil

Fresh ground pepper or red pepper flakes

Finely chopped onion

Finely chopped fresh ginger

Minced or powdered garlic (not garlic salt)

Balsamic or apple cider vinegar

Salt substitutes

At first it's tough not to reach for a pinch of salt when you eat, and it's a hard habit to break, but your taste buds will soon get used to the delicious new flavors in your food. Less salt means lower blood pressure and less bloating, so the rest of your body will be psyched, too.

What is your favorite salt substitute? Share it with us in the comment section below.

Healthy Eating Tip: Skip the Dip

If you're thinking of dipping into that ranch dip the next time you're at a party, you may want to reconsider.

New research has found that double dipping does in fact spread bacteria from person to person. Here's why: The New York Times reports that on average, three to six double dips can transfer about 10,000 bacteria from the eater’s mouth to the remaining dip. Gross, right? So skip the dip and just munch on the veggies instead. Not only will you be saving yourself from others' germs, but you'll also be saving yourself from, in many cases, a lot of unnecessary calories.

Healthy Eating Tip: Don't Eat Last Minute

Have you ever had to make a food decision when you've waited too long to eat and you find yourself absolutely starving? This is the point when anything goes (think frozen pizza, or the McDonald's number two meal), and it's really hard to make healthy decisions. Avoid the trap by planning out your meals. With a level head, you'll be much more apt to pick healthy choices than the faster, often unhealthy ones.
