Gear Review: Yogoco Mat Bag

Whether you practice yoga or Pilates or just like to bring a mat to the gym to do toning exercises, I found a wonderful new bag made by Yogoco. It's my new favorite thing for so many reasons. For one, it's eco-friendly, made from pre-consumer T-shirts scraps. It's also extremely lightweight and has two 26-inch long compartments: one for a mat (it even fits my huge Manduka mat) and one for all the extra stuff like your towel, clothes, water bottle, snacks, or whatever. Mesh material on the sides lets your sweaty things air out, and the inside lining is wipeable. In the smaller zipper compartment, there's another pocket to hold important stuff like your keys, cell phone, or gym membership card.

Now I don't need to use my ugly oversize gym bag as often. With this Yogoco bag, everything is safely stored in its neat little compartment, which makes it easier to carry all my stuff and a cinch to find what I need. Many folks still, though it boggles my mind as to why, refuse to wear a helmet when biking. Some are worried about messing up their hair on not looking like a fashionista while wearing a helmet. As my mom, and former R.N., always said, "A helmet is a lot more fashionable than a halo brace." But I digress . . .

For those looking for a helmet that's a little cooler, and pricier, than your average helmet try on a Yakkay for size. These smart helmets are basically a very simple, but safe, helmet fitted with a cool hat-like cover. Now that the weather is warming up, I bet a lot of you are getting psyched to walk and run outside. The problem is most of the country is dealing with melting snow, so it's still pretty wet outside. I think these are super cute, but what tops their good looks is they are made from Gore-Tex so they're completely waterproof. I've made no secret of my love for the Nike + iPod Sports Kit, which lets you track your time, distance, pace, and calories using your Apple iPod and special shoe sensors. So I'm psyched that Nike is expanding the line later this month, with a new product called the Nike+ SportBand.

According to Gizmodo, the gadget could be released as early as next week. This wearable wristband lets you circumvent the iPod if you want, because it communicates directly with your shoe sensors. Your progress is displayed on a screen on the wristband rather than on the iPod, which is ideal for people who don't like to run with iPods but still want to track calories burned and other data. The gadget also has a USB connection, so you can upload your data to the Nike website to see how far you've come.

Get in Gear: Bolle Tennis Sunglasses

Most of you agreed with me that blue-tinted "weight-loss" sunglasses seem ridiculous. But colored lenses can be beneficial, and I'm not just talking about rose-colored glasses. Bolle makes a very cool line of Competivision Sunglasses for tennis, which use blue-tinted lenses to mute every color but yellow. That way, everything looks somewhat duller except the bright yellow of the tennis ball, allowing you to keep your eye on it better.

I don't personally own a pair of these, but I have tried out a friend's pair, and I can say that they really work, especially when it's really bright or sort of hazy outside. The lenses are available for a number of different frame styles, which range in price from about $55 to $90. Bolle also makes a similar product for golfing. If you've tried either of these, I'd love to know what you thought.

Spring weather makes me want to go for a long hike with the entire family, and that means our dog, Bonnie, comes along, too. It's important to pack water, snacks, and extra layers for everyone, but since my daughters are young, they get tired carrying anything for too long. My doorbell rang the other day and when I answered it, my postman had left this package (pictured on left) leaning against my door. I laughed out loud and thought, "Hmm. I wonder what that could be. I was so excited that my hoop had arrived, since practicing my moves along with the HoopDance DVD using a dinky hoop I found at a toy store wasn't quite cutting it.

HoopGirl, the woman who made the DVD, says that using an adult-sized slightly weighted hoop makes regular hooping and doing tricks much easier. The small amount of weight keeps the hoop spinning longer, so it's better for working out (the more time you're actually hooping, the more you can tone your muscles and burn calories).

I am always searching for balance in my life, both literally and figuratively. Standing on an unstable surface is one of the best ways to heighten your sense of balance. Being off kilter will certainly help you hone your skills and if you do it on a board you will not only work your core, but also prepare yourself for board sports of all kinds.

I stepped on a The Flow ($100) made by Vew-Do Balance Boards recently and was plunged into the unstable world of a rocker board combined with a roller. I have used rocker boards with Pilates, but this board was much more fun and I don't just think it is the colorful graphics. Time flies when you are on the board; my first 15 minutes felt more like two. The balance board worked not only my ankles but my abs too. The board, about the size of a skateboard has a metal track on the bottom. The track fits onto a cylinder (aka a "rock"), so you stand on the board and rock side to side as you perfect your balance. It is designed for "toe-heel" action (whatever that means), but I just tried to keep upright, which is much easier on thin carpeting than hardwood floors. Once you can stand on the board you can begin to add in other fitness elements. Me? I really only progressed to squatting a bit while standing on the board.

Last year I discovered something that has changed the way I walk during the winter so I wanted to be sure that I shared my discovery once again.

Walking during the winter can be a lot more challenging due to the inclement weather (snow, ice, etc.) that is likely to occur. If you're not a serious winter walker, then you're not going to want to invest in a pair of heavy duty snow shoes. As the weather has gotten a bit chillier I have started wearing thin gloves during my runs after work with my husband. It's been great except that the gloves have made it hard to keep a grip on my water bottle, and last night I dropped it about four times. So today I have decided I need a hydration pack, especially since I am the type of runner that needs to stay constantly hydrated while running.

On my hunt for a hydration pack, I came across the Camp Inn Hydr8r Hydration Pack, which to my delight was on sale for $9.93! I am thrilled because I am not yet sure how much I am going to love running with something on my back so I don't want to invest a lot of money on a product that may not be the right solution for me. This particular hydration pack holds 100 ounces (or just under three liters), which means it won't be too heavy when it's full. I love that it comes in a bunch of fun colors, which means now my only issue is deciding which color I want.

I love my new iPod Shuffle. It's super small and lightweight, which makes it perfect for working out. The problem is that one way or another I drop it, a lot. I know it has a clip but somehow it gets caught up in my clothes and ends up getting flung a few feet, leaving me to retrieve it, hoping it still works.

I don't know if you have this issue, but I am thinking about getting a Sport Cap for iPod Shuffle ($16). I already love wearing hats when working out because they keep me warm along with keeping my short hair out of my face. This cap not only has a spot for your 2nd generation iPod shuffle, but it also has a pocket so you can keep your wires out of the way too. If you don't love pink, it also comes in white and black. (Don't get freaked out by the pinwheel looking thing that says iPod on the cap, that's just the tag.)

I am always looking for new ways to free my hands when I am working out, which is why when I came across NekFIT ($34), I was intrigued. After looking at it though, I am not sure it would solve all my issues as much as create more problems. I don't know about you guys, but my neck gets pretty sweaty after I've ran a few miles so I am not sure if having a plastic contraption holding on for dear life to the back of it would be a happy solution for me. Some days when I work out, I love to wear tight clothes. I can see my alignment and technique better, and it makes me feel feminine and sexy. Then there are other days when I want to be more comfortable in looser fitting clothes. If you can relate, check out the new Simplicity Pant made by be present.

I'll admit it, I'm not much of a boxer. I have dabbled in kick boxing a little, but I was never good with hitting other people, or even a lifeless punching bag for that matter. However since watching Hilary Swank kick butt in Million Dollar Baby, I have been totally impressed by how fit boxers can be.

I'll be the first to admit that I am not a fan of fanny packs. However sometimes when exercising, I find them acceptable. Still not fashionable, but acceptable. Wearing one while dancing around at Disneyland, totally unacceptable.

If you exercise outdoors, then you definitely should have your ID with you for the same reason we microchip our dogs. Accidents happen, and in those unfortunate situations you, like your K9 friend, may not be able to speak for yourself. That is where the Road ID comes in handy. Your feet take a lot of abuse from all the pounding, stomping, kicking and leaping you do. It is a fact that if you are on the move, your feet are too. This means they get hot. This means they get sweaty. All that extra moisture can cause some nasty blisters. Cotton socks stay wet, so you need socks made out of merino wool, which wicks. The wool pulls moisture away from your skin, keeping your feet dry and comfy.

Here are some of my favorites made by Darn Tough and Smartwool. You can choose the amount of thickness and cushion you need, and the height of sock. All the pairs come in some wonderful colors too, many more than the ones shown here.

One of the biggest complaints about ear buds is that they fall out when running due to the combination of increased sweat, bouncing around and small ear holes (for some).

We all love doing push-ups, right? However there are times when our wrists just don't agree with weight bearing exercise. There are wrist wedges you can use, or you can try these new Wrist Assured Gloves ($68).
