Biggest Loser Families Recap: NYC Makeovers

The competition on the Biggest Loser Families should be heating up, but last night's show was surprisingly free of drama. Well, not quite. There was Vicky's moment of paralyzing fear, verging on a tantrum, during the physical challenge, but even that little episode struck me as placid. Maybe because everyone involved, blue teammates included, seemed "over" Vicky's antics.

This week all the contestants were treated to a makeover in NYC. Their trip to the Big Apple included new hair fancy and flattering styles. The highlights from the salon: Vicky dyed her hair red and Ed got some highlights himself. Then all five contestants were treated to a shopping trip at Macy's lightly supervised by season-four winner of Project Runway Christian Siriano (didn't he often comment on how he loved the super-skinny models?). This was followed by a "live" reveal on The Tyra Banks Show, complete with a reunion with a friend, spouse, sibling, or parent. The reunions, full of lots of emotion, were pretty sweet watch.

Upon returning back to the ranch, the five remaining players competed in a physical challenge with a two-week spa vacation as the prize. The contestants had to wedge themselves in bottomless boxes suspended 12 to 15 feet above a pool of water. Vicky was first to call uncle, but refused to drop into the water. Heba, Ed, and Renee eventually followed dropping easily and gleefully into the water below. Michelle won the prize and was a disappointed to have her victory celebration marred by Vicky's attention-stealing freak-out.

To see who was eliminated and how they look today

Biggest Loser Families Recap: NFL and Thanksgiving Week

Nothing screams November like football and turkey with stuffing. It was NFL and Thanksgiving week on The Biggest Loser Families last night. Celebrity visits spiced up an otherwise drama-free show. Former 49ers Jerry Rice and Steve Young (go Niners!) came onto campus to train the contestants football style, and Rocco DiSpirito taught the contestants how to lighten up traditional Thanksgiving dishes. The spirit of "friendship" at the T-day table felt a little forced to me.

Once again the two-hour format and repetitive editing almost killed the show for me. After watching another tip involving Extra gum I feel I should buy some stock in it because that gum is what America will be chewing. But back to the actual details. Vicky won both physical challenges, as she continues to fly under the radar. Michelle and Renee are onto her game and the mother-daughter team complained openly that they wished Amy used her swing vote in the previous week to vote Vicky off the show. The saddest part of the episode was Amy's naivety, for she truly believed that Vicky was on her side.

To see if Vicky had Amy's back and who was eliminated last night,

I just read a statistic recently in Health magazine that illustrates with numbers how we women eat, diet, and lose weight. Here it is: The average woman tries 104 diets between the ages of 18 and 70. Each diet typically lasts five weeks. If you do the math, the average woman is on a diet for 10 years of her life!

I think this equation reveals much about the problems with how we diet. Many fad diets out there are not sustainable. Losing weight and keeping it off is really about making lifestyle changes and food choices you can handle for the long haul, or in concrete numbers, the other 42 years of your life.

So, what I want to know is . . .

Biggest Loser Families Recap: '80s Week

Life on the Biggest Loser ranch was a little tense at the beginning of the week, since Amy voted Brady off the show. To lighten the mood, someone decided to celebrate the '80s, complete with teased hair, leg warmers, and lots of blush. Bob and Jillian treated their teams to '80s-style workouts. Jillian's group did some "break dancing"(I put that in quotes since the only thing they did resembling break dancing was a group wave) and Bob, wearing short shorts, led his team in a step aerobics class.

The physical challenge was an '80s health and fitness trivia quiz, performed with the contestants holding 50 percent of their weight in large water buckets placed over their heads. If they answered a question wrong water was added to their bucket, and when the contestants let go, they were doused with water reminiscent of the famous scene in Flash Dance. The prize, won by Michele after bribing her mom to let go by offering her a designer purse, was either $5,000 or giving another contestant a one-pound penalty at the weigh in.

The show heated up as we edged closer to the weigh in, to see who was sent home and how they look now, just

Biggest Loser Recap: High Drama and Single Play

Last night, The Biggest Loser brought the drama. Watching the show last night, I was nearly as tense as I was last Tuesday during the national elections. Now that the show is down to the final seven, it is heating up. The two-hour format didn't seem to drag as in episodes past because the tension and taunting were high. The junior high antics of the blue team began early in the show as Vicky and Heba could not control their delight at Phillip being voted off the black team. Although Michelle, Coleen, and Renee, of the black team, were not surprised by Vicky and Heba's antics, they were still hurt by the blatant rudeness.

After the vote, Ali came to the ranch to tell the contestants that team play was over and that the game was now every player for him or herself. This announcement was followed by an even bigger twist. All the players returned (but Coleen's father — he had to work) for one last chance to return to the ranch. Most of the contestants are looking great and have lost a considerable amount of weight. We were treated to some of Vicky's very public taunting of Phillip. The prize of the physical challenge, open only to returning players, was not only to return to the game, but also to have immunity at the weigh in. The returning player to step 1,000 onto a classic aerobic step first would win.

To see who won the challenge and who lost at the weigh in, just

You Asked: Muscle vs. Fat?

Dear Fit Sugar,
I'm on a mission to lose that last 10 pounds, which has been so difficult, and I'm training for a half-marathon as well. I eat well and exercise a lot — cardio almost every day and strength training five days a week. I've always heard that muscle weighs more than fat, but after I reached a plateau, I've found that I've been gaining weight. Not much, just a pound or two, but still gaining weight. How do we know when weight gained is added muscle mass, and when it means we need to reevaluate the calories we consume? I'm frustrated that all the hard work only turned into a weight gain.
—Confused and Frustrated

This is a common source of frustration and confusion, but I think I can help clear up a few questions. To see what I have to say about muscles and fat, just

Can You Debunk Diet Myths?

Losing weight is hard, especially when misinformation about dieting is frighteningly easy to find. Many diet myths persist so I am wondering if you can separate truth from fiction. Take my true or false quiz to find out.

Biggest Loser Families Recap: Tears and Even More Tears

After watching a politically charged reality show, aka the second presidential debate, I was pleasantly surprised to see that Biggest Loser Families would run 60 minutes instead of two hours. After watching Jillian make almost every member on her team cry in the course of the hour, I was sorely disappointed to learn that the weigh-in will take place during a second "special" episode that airs tonight. The show is really mixing things up — keeping us on our toes or rather our couches, and I am not quite sure how I feel about that.

In this episode a couple of teams "cashed" in their prizes from the hill-climb challenge from the first episode. The red team, Amy and Philip, flew to South Carolina for a 24-hour visit with their three children. It was a heartwarming and tearful reunion. The entire family went on a hike to reinforce the lessons these parents have learned on the ranch.

Amy and Shellay, the mother-daughter purple team, decided to use their prize of 24 hours with their trainer Jillian. Instead of pampering the contestants, Jillian took the purple team to the gym for a workout, and was more than disappointed with mother Shellay's attitude and laziness. Their strength-training session ended in tears.

To hear details on the challenge, just

The latest season of The Biggest Loser is rolling along, and what better way to celebrate, or tempt, the contestants than with a road trip. The families were treated to a trip to the glories of the Grand Canyon.

Possibly daunted by the sheer beauty of their surroundings, the contestants were unable to figure out how to work out without a gym, even though Ali left workout gear for them — medicine balls, resistance bands, and pads. They all took a few long walks around their campsite, although they stayed in one of the seven wonders of the natural world, which is covered with hiking trails. Many contestants complained that they just "don't lift boulders."

The episode included a "Temptation" where contestants were asked to guess the caloric content of some convenient store staples. The catch being that if they guessed incorrectly, they had to eat the snack. The prize for guessing correctly was a night in a luxury RV, and the orange team, husband and wife Heda and Ed, won the temptation. The orange team also won the kayak challenge and the prize of an RV to take home, an odd gift in these gas-expensive times. Speaking of presents — Coleen of the yellow team turned 24 and all the contestants celebrated with kind and encouraging words as well as a small cake.

To see how the teams fared once they headed back to the ranch and who was eliminated, just

Biggest Loser Families Recap: Plateau

The ongoing theme of the second episode of Biggest Loser Families was the dreaded plateau. After seven days of shocking the system with hours of working out and a sudden change of diet, the body goes into a kind of diet shock. Contestants on average only lose 2 percent of their body weight, compared to double-digit percentages from the previous week. Jillian and Bob repeatedly commented that some competitors even gain weight in the second week, and this season was unfortunately no exception.

Almost as if to counteract the depressing weight-loss plateau, this episode was full of contests and challenges. There was betting/auction game, where the team to bid auction style for highest percentage of weight loss had the chance to win $10,000 prize if they lost the percentage of weight they bid. But, if the team who bid to lose the highest percentage didn't meet their goal, they would automatically fall below the yellow line. Much to Jillian's dismay, the yellow team, made up of father Jerry and daughter Coleen, bet that they could lose 2.4 percent of weight totaling 14 pounds. This contest was followed by a Slip-n-Slide hillside challenge, with the prize of calling home. Then guest chef, Rocco DiSpirito, gave a lesson on shopping and healthy cooking. This turned out to be a contest as well, and the cook of the tastiest meal won a year's worth of groceries as the prize.

One of the most striking elements of the second episode was these contestants are serious competitors. The game is already "on" with faked or exaggerated injuries used as subterfuge, and hopeful alliances created out of favors granted to competing teams. This element of the competition seems to have arrived on campus early this season, but these contestants are savvy having watched the show for five seasons.

To see who gained weight and which team was eliminated, just

Speak Up: How Much Weight Are You Trying to Lose?

When you decide you need to lose weight, it can be a daunting task so it's best to have a weight-loss goal in mind before you begin. I'm talking about a specific goal, as in a number of pounds you're trying to lose. You can come up with this number on your own or with the help of your doctor or dietitian. When you do come up with a number, sometimes it helps to share it with people, to make your goal more concrete. So tell me, how much weight are you trying to lose? Five pounds? 15 pounds? 30 pounds? More than that? Or are you completely satisfied with your weight?

Share your dieting goals in the comments section below.

Source

Seven Questions For Weight Loss

It seems that everyone I meet feels like they could stand to lose a few pounds, but is that really the case? Are you really putting your health at risk, or are you just carrying around a little harmless fluff? According to WebMD, here are seven question you should ask yourself to help decide if you really need to get serious about dropping pounds.

What is your lifestyle? Most people exercise and eat healthy just to lose weight, but this kind of lifestyle is important for everyone all the time. If you're not at all active and you eat poorly, you may need to start making some changes for your overall health, not because of a weight-loss goal.

What is your family history? If high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, or another weight-related condition runs in your family then, yes, you must be conscious of your weight.

What is your weight history? People who have consistently gained weight over the years need to watch out since experts say your weight should not increase dramatically, even as you get older. Even moderate weight gain in adulthood can increase your risk of diabetes, so it's important to try to maintain a healthy weight.

To see the other four questions

Biggest Loser Families Recap: The Premiere

The Biggest Loser Families premiered last night and the five-season formula of the show did not disappoint. I got choked up a couple of times and was inspired by the family teamwork. Watching the teams of two being weighed in simultaneously and seeing how proud the duos were of their loved ones was truly touching.

As a viewer I find the elimination round of the show's opening week more than a little sad. It is amazing to see the dramatic changes that can happen in just seven days of Jillian <strike>yelling</strike> coaching her team through wall sits and Bob teaching his team the beauty of the treadmill.

The health issues of obesity were highlighted in scared-straight fashion, making it impossible to snack while watching the show. Through computer simulation, contestants were shown the detrimental effects of fat on their vital organs. The two oldest participants were put on exercise restriction, 30 minutes a day, due to health-related problems. That is a serious health problem.

To see who was unfortunately eliminated and how they look today, just

Generally, when peeling back the wrapper on that second devil's food cupcake, we start to make deals with ourselves.

I don't know about you, but my rationale always involves more exercise. I tell myself I will run, bike and swim more. How about you? When you abandon moderation how do you rationalize your actions to set yourself back on track? Tell me . . .

5 Pieces of Weight Loss Advice

It seems like some of you have back-to-school weight loss plans because I have received quite a few question about dieting advice. And just like it takes time to move up a grade, it takes time to lose weight. Especially if you want to keep the weight off. Here are five pieces of sound advice for losing weight.

You should eat at least 1200 calories per day. Eating less than 1200 slows down your metabolism, because your body thinks there is a famine and wants to hold on to calories and actually prevents you from losing weight.

Aim to lose no more than two pounds a week. This means no crash dieting, just sensible eating and plenty of calorie burning exercise.

Keep a food journal to make sure that you are truly eating a sensible diet and not over eating or over snacking. Try the FitSugar food journal since food tracking has been proven to help folks lose weight.

You need to burn 3,500 calories to lose a pound of body fat. To lose a pound a week, you should have a daily calorie deficit of 500 calories. You can create a calorie deficit by eating less, by exercising more, or both. I recommend a mixture of both.

Focus on losing fat not lean muscle. Since muscles not only keep you strong, they also burn considerably more calories, pound for pound, than fat. Be sure to add strength training to your exercise plan.

Source

Diet Tip: Don't Skimp on Vitamin C

Vitamin C might not keep you from catching a cold, but not getting an adequate amount of the vitamin can keep you from burning fat.

A study from Arizona State found that folks with low-blood concentrations of vitamin C, who walked on treadmills for a 60-minute session, burned 25 percent less fat than other participants with adequate amounts of C. Fortunately, a simple dose of vitamin C remedied the lackluster fat-burning potential of the participants. Vitamin C is necessary for creating the compound carnitine, which helps turn fat into fuel.

While the recommended daily intake of vitamin C is low, 90mg for men and 75mg for women, many health advocates recommend larger daily doses. Holistic health doctor Andrew Weil recommends 200mg daily, while the Linus Pauling Institute (named for the scientist that made the vitamin famous) recommends 400mg daily. The health team at Real Age recommends consuming 1,200mg daily between foods and supplements.

On this note, I am going to add some strawberries to my cereal tomorrow morning since a half cup contains 42mg of vitamin C.

Back on Track: Pack Your Lunch Now

Summer is slowly drawing to a close and the wonderful distraction of the Olympics has drawn to a close as well. I suggest starting the last week of August off on the right foot by packing your lunch for Monday the night before. Take what's left of Sunday dinner and create a healthy lunch. I like to use leftover veggies and meat as salad toppers for my greens. Making your own lunch means you end up with a meal that is good for your waistline as well as your wallet.

Holy Guacamole: Tips for Eating Mexican

Mexican food is not only one of my favorites, but my kids love it as well – a working mother's dream come true. While beans, a staple of the Mexican diet, are super healthy a super burrito is not. Here are my tips on how to eat healthy and low cal when eating foods from south of the Rio Grande.

Avoid refried beans — that creaminess comes at a caloric price. Choose black beans or whole pinto beans instead.

Go grilled — Choose lean meats like pollo asado (grilled chicken) or grilled fish. The sauces in Mexican food can add on unwanted calories and fats.

Salsa not sour cream — Salsa is fat free and flavorful making it tasty a substitution for saturated fat and calorie laden sour cream or crema.

Set a chip limit — As much as I love corn chips, they are fried in oil and loaded with calories. Grab a handful and limit yourself to that handful. You can always request no chips with your order too.

To see if you should order corn or flour tortillas, just

DrSugar Answers: Cutting Too Many Calories Too Fast?

DrSugar is in the house and answering your questions.

Dear DrSugar,
I am currently cutting back and trying to lose some weight (as always), but this time I am sticking with it even if i have a bad day, but I am not sure how many calories I should be eating. I was talking to a friend who said if I am always hungry I am not eating enough. I thought I was eating around 1500 calories a day, but after food journaling I realized I was closer to 2400 daily calories. So I cut back my food intake and have added low-fat string cheese, apple sauce cups, fresh carrots, and grape tomatoes to my diet, and am trying to cut out the 100-calorie packs of snacks and only do fruits and veggies. I never thought I would say this, but yes I am hungry, but I don't want to eat and I don't want to starve at the same time. Am I cutting too many calories too quickly?

To see what DrSugar has to say about all this, just

Mediterranean Diet and Low-Carb Diet Neck and Neck

When it comes to dieting, we all want to know what is most effective. A new study performed in Israel found that a low-carb Atkins like diet and the Mediterranean diet outperformed the low-fat diet. The study lasted two years, considerably longer than previous studies, and the weight loss period was limited to 6 months with a maintenance period of 18 months – I think the maintenance period is truly where a diet's success can be measured.

To see what the different dieters ate, just

Weight loss plateaus are inevitable and seem to happen around the 6 month mark. Here are some ideas to help you push on through to the other side.

Don't Let the Weekend Slow You Down

I like to think of dieting as a lifestyle change, not just a means of limiting calories. This means when the weekend rolls around, you need to continue your healthy lifestyle and forgo the many splurges Saturday and Sunday can offer, like brunch and extra cocktails.

New research from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis indicates that dieters tend to eat more calories on the weekend. Eating more calories than you expend means you slow down weight loss. I think an occasional splurge is OK, but two days of consistent splurges can make the needle on the scale stagnate, or even worse head in the wrong direction.

Going "weekend casual" doesn't mean you can let your willpower off the hook. Watch your portions of both food and alcohol. Plan ahead just like you do during the week. Don't sabotage your hard earned week of work in two days.

Food Journaling Works

I have always thought that keeping a food journal was a great way to lose weight. Yes, it might seem a bit obsessive to write down everything you consume, but it sure will make you accountable for the calories you consume.

A new study by Kaiser Permanente backs up my theory. They found that participants who kept food journals lost more weight than those who did not. The dieters who wrote down everything they ate or drank six days a week (even food journaling demands a day off) lost twice as much weight as the dieters who only tracked their food only one day a week.

It you are trying to lose weight, try my printable food journal. Just download the PDF, print it out and start tracking.

Berries For Weight Control?

As if I needed another reason to love the berries of Summer. Not only are they loaded with anthocyanins, a powerful antioxidant, according to new research from Japan these mighty antioxidants may alter the activity of genes found in human-fat cells. In a completely separate study, mice fed anthocyanins (poor rodents didn't get to eat the actual berries) while eating a typically weight-inducing, hight-fat diet didn't gain weight. Researches surmised it was the berry-derived antioxidant.

I need no reductive reason to eat berries, but I find this research fascinating. Berries are a great part of any healthy diet since they are naturally sweet, low in calories, and high in both fiber and water. So berries, whatever their intense color – blue, black, red, or pink a – help keep you feeling full and satisfied.

Flaxseeds: More Than Omega-3s

Flaxseeds are not taking any flack. Even though the omega-3 fatty acids found in flaxseeds might not be as easy for your body to utilize as the omega-3s from fish and fish oil, there are still plenty of reasons to eat flaxseeds.

There are a couple of reasons that this little seed can help with weight loss and one big reason is fiber. Flaxseeds are a good mix of insoluble and soluble fiber, which combined help to aid digestion and contribute to a sensation of fullness post meal. If you prefer flaxseed oil, it ranks highest on the satiety scale as well and it promotes fat burning not fat storage.

To check out the health reasons to eat flax just

Tips on How to Keep It Off

So you've lost the weight, congrats! I wish I could tell you that the battle is finally over but unfortunately keeping the weight off after you've lost it can be just as tough. Here are a few basic tips from Bonnie Taub-Dix, a registered dietitian in New York City and a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association on how to keep weight off once you've lost it:

Allow yourself a weight-gain range of 3-5 pounds without panicking. When you’re at the lower end of your range, give yourself a little freedom to enjoy some of your favorite foods. If your weight goes up another pound or two, then you’ll need to pull in the reins again to keep yourself within your desired range.

Find a consistent tool to help you stay in touch with your body weight. You can weigh yourself on a scale daily or one or two days a week. I prefer weighing Fridays and Mondays — a way to control weekend splurges when overeating is most common. Or you can use an article of clothing, such as a pair of your favorite skinny pants, that will become your frame of reference. Try them on the last day of each month. Clothing doesn’t lie (and don’t try to blame the dry cleaner for shrinkage!).

Get rid of “fat” clothes that are too big on you and no longer fit. Why would you ever want to fit into that size again? Dress the body you have.

Part Two: Moving Past the Weight Loss Plateau – Food

When you're trying to lose weight and you hit a plateau, all is not lost. First off, you are not gaining weight and there are a few things you can do to get back into action. For fitness ideas to help you continue on your weight loss journey read: Part One: Moving Past the Weight Loss Plateau – Fitness. For ideas having to do with your diet read on!

I think a two-pronged approach is the best way to get the scale to budge again. Here are a few food things that might help you out.

Increase the amount of vegetables and fruits in your eating plan. Many dieters decrease daily calories but manage to not eat a healthy diet. Focusing on eating healthy might make a difference.

If you eat a lot of low fat food and carbs, try to eat healthy fats and lean proteins. You need to vary your diet the way you vary your exercise routine. Also, eating protein at every meal can help you stay fuller for longer.

Cycle your calories. Maintain the same caloric intake over the week, but eat 100 calories more one day, followed by 100 calories less the next day. Some folks call this the "zig zag" method.

Alter your eating habits. Replace three meals a day with six small meals, keeping the daily caloric intake virtually the same.

If it sounds like you are trying to confuse your body, well . . . you are. By changing up your routine you might break your boredom with your workouts and your meal plans.

Remember: 3500 less calories a week equals 1 pound of weight lost (and you want that to be fat not lean muscle). Vary your caloric intake and/or vary your exercise plan, just make sure you are sticking to your ultimate caloric intake versus energy spent goal. You should never, ever eat less than 1200 calories a day!

Source

Dieting Concept: The 10% Plan

I am not sure which is more difficult, losing the weight or keeping it off. After research involving thousands of overweight to obese subjects, George Blackburn, an associate director of the division of nutrition at Harvard Medical School, created the 10 percent plan to help people keep off the lost weight. Since the body unfortunately evolved to hang onto excess weight, losing it in stages helps combat the boomerang affect that can happen with rapid weight loss.

His plan works like this – basically you lose 10 percent of your body weight and then maintain that weight for six months before beginning another round of weight loss. For example, a person weighing 220 pounds would have the goal of losing 22 to pounds. Once the weight is lost, it takes six months for the body to adjust to that weight, or as Black burn refers to it, the new, lower "set point." As you lose weight you need to take a pause to let the complex mechanisms of the body recalibrate to your new set point. Once this recalibration happens, your body is no longer conspiring to maintain your predieting weight, but your new lower weight. From there you can proceed to lose more and stand a much better chance of keeping it off.

Sounds fascinating to me. If you are interested in more details check out his book Break Through You Set Point. You can find it here.

Diet Tip: Keep the Formula Simple

We read it time and time again, but one of the simplest rules of weight loss is often ignored: To lose weight, you need to expend more calories than you take in. There are plenty of dieting strategies to help you do this, from keeping a food diary to cycling calories. But the magical, yet simple, formula remains the same.

In a recent column on Yahoo Health, personal trainer Debbie Rocker elaborates on this quintessential weight loss equation with some common-sense reminders, which I can certainly use from time to time! To see Rocker's advice,

CalorieKing Goes Mobile

While it would be great to have a nutritionist on hand at all times to guide us while ordering at restaurants, it just isn't feasible. They have busy lives and we probably couldn't afford that kind of customer service anyway. If you can't have a traveling nutritionist, you can keep the next best thing in your pocket. CalorieKing, one of my favorite calorie and nutritional information websites and pocket guides, has created a version of its site designed specifically for mobile phone users. It is easy to use and the interface is not clogged up with a lot of graphics so the sought out information downloads to your phone quickly.

Here's how it works:

You now have 50,000 meals, fast food and chain restaurant items at your fingertips, wherever you have a mobile connection. The other great bonus is that it is free. You don't need to sign in or register.

Weekend Reading: Ten Years Thinner

If you search hard enough, you can find a diet/exercise book that tells you what you want to hear. I have found this to be true for both gardening and child rearing, and now I know it to be true in the quest for a healthier, fitter, thinner body.

The contrast between Ten Years Thinner ($26) and The Thrive Diet is a case in point. Ten Years Thinner, written by Christine Lydon, M.D., argues that lean animal protein and strength training are the key components to looking and feeling your best. On the other hand, The Thrive Diet asserts that vegan, and even raw food, along with endurance training is where you will find your wealth of health. I have only read these books, and haven't followed either plan, but the contrast is fascinating to me. Both books lay out their plans convincingly, and discuss how their diets combat the negative impact of inflammation while increasing your energy levels. It just boils down to finding a plan you think you can follow for the long haul.

Want to hear the details about Ten Years Thinner? Then

Shopping List for a Diet

Shopping for a diet? There's a lot of bad advice and fad diets out there, so you should shop around and compare to make sure the diet you chose is healthy and something you can actually live with. According to WebMD all diets should include the following:

Include exercise

Allow a variety of foods from all the food groups

Be created by a credentialed professional

Promote slow and steady weight loss

Include portion control

Allow snacks between meals

Not rely heavily on supplements

Include small portions of your favorite foods and beverages

Be based on science

Include a maintenance plan

Recommend drinking plenty of water

Sounds pretty reasonable to me. What do you think? Did they miss anything?

Healthy Eating Tip: Hara Hachi Bu

In a recent report on longevity the Japanese island of Okinawa was extolled as one extremely healthy place to live and age. Aside from having an elderly friendly culture and an exceptional diet (lots of fish, soy and a colorful array of veggies), Okinawans follow the philosophy of hara hachi bu, meaning eat until you're only 80 percent full. A little different from the stuff yourself silly mentality behind those all you can eat buffets.

Typically, Okinawans eat about 1200 calories a day, which is about 20 percent less than the average Briton. Interesting figure don't ya think? I think it is a great way to eat and reminds me of advice a yoga teacher gave me a good long while ago. Eat just enough so you can practice yoga after your meal. That is, eat so you have enough energy to practice but not so much that practicing yoga would be uncomfortable.

Try it at your next couple of meals. Of course this requires eating mindfully as well, which is another healthful eating practice.

Whole Grains Better For a Smaller Belly

I am a fan of whole grains; they are grains as nature intended full of fiber, bran, and germ. New research indicated that they might help you decrease belly fat. In a study where dieters were divided into two groups — one ate refined grains and the other ate only whole grains — both groups lost an equal amount of weight. However, the whole-grain group lost more belly fat. Not only that, but certain markers for metabolic syndrome, a precursor to type 2 diabetes, were also lower in the whole-grain group.

Researchers believe the high-fiber content of the whole-grain foods helped keep dieters blood-sugar levels at an even level throughout the day. Plus, whole grains are more nutrient rich and provide healthful antioxidants.

Remember to look for the whole-grain stamp on processed foods, and try whipping up a batch of quinoa for dinner. It is important to keep your waist circumference below 35 inches for women and 40 inches for men, to reduce your risk of heart disease. In fact, new data shows that strokes are on the rise in women and "spare tires" at the waistline might be to blame. So eat those whole grains!

Interestingly enough, a common weight loss mistake is over estimating the calories burned while working out and subsequently eating too much.

Speak Up: What's the Most Ridiculous Diet You've Tried?

We've all tried a crazy diet at one point or another. My most ridiculous diet moment was when I decided to do the Cabbage Soup Diet in prep for a pal's wedding. I lasted up until banana and skim milk day, day four, where I could only consume bananas, skim milk and cabbage soup during the day. This was the last straw. I know I'm not the only fool who went on a ridiculous diet in search of the magic bullet. So speak up and share the most ridiculous diet (self created, mainstream, or otherwise) you've ever tried in the comments section below.

Healthy Eating Tip: Skip the Dip

If you're thinking of dipping into that ranch dip the next time you're at a party, you may want to reconsider.

New research has found that double dipping does in fact spread bacteria from person to person. Here's why: The New York Times reports that on average, three to six double dips can transfer about 10,000 bacteria from the eater’s mouth to the remaining dip. Gross, right? So skip the dip and just munch on the veggies instead. Not only will you be saving yourself from others' germs, but you'll also be saving yourself from, in many cases, a lot of unnecessary calories.

I am 22-years-old and am a healthy girl. I don't eat junk food or sweets and I hate chocolate. I pretty much live on my greens. I'm not fat and I'm not skinny. I exercise every day and I'm generally a very active person, but I just cant seem to lose weight! I don't want to lose a lot, I just want to get back into shape.

Diet Tip: Cycle Calories

We are highly adaptive creatures and our bodies work to create equilibrium. When you are dieting and eating 1200 calories a day, your body will adapt and figure out how to live off of 1200 calories. Great to know we are so evolved, but when you are trying to lose weight, this adaptive nature can work against you and all your hard dieting work. Just like you need to change the physical challenges in your workout by adding intervals to your cardio or increasing your weights when strength training, you need to mix up your daily caloric intake. You need to cycle your calories.

Weight Watchers has launched a new massive ad campaign that says, "Stop Dieting, Start Living." Now call me crazy, but I've always put Weight Watchers in the diet category so I'm confused.

I love the idea behind the whole stop dieting and start living message, but Weight Watchers is all about going to meetings and counting points. Sounds like a diet to me. Is anyone else thinking this is classic wolf in sheep's clothing?

Let me finish by saying that I think Weight Watchers is a fabulous diet, er non diet, that has really done wonders for a lot of people, I am just not loving this new campaign. What about you guys? What do you think about it all? Speak up and share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Green Tea Keeps Mice Skinny

I extol the benefits of green tea regularly, and now there is another great health attribute to add to the list – blocking fat and keeping extra pounds at bay. Rather, a health attribute to hopefully add to the list of benefits in the near future, since this attribute of green tea has not yet been proven in humans.

A recent study found that mice, with an obesity gene, which were fed food laced with green tea had: less weight and fat gain, had less fat in their livers, and had lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels. That's plenty of good stuff coming from a cup of green stuff.

What I find most encouraging about this study is that the mice were fed the equivalent of seven cups of tea, while that might seem high it is by no means an outrageous amount of tea.

Me? I will keep sipping my daily dose of green tea, mostly because I enjoy the taste. How about you? Do you like green tea? Do you drink it daily? Tell me how you feel about green tea in the comments section below.

Bad Foods Can Be Good For You, Part II

Indulging in moderation is okay if the "bad" foods are also good for you; dark chocolate and red wine come to mind. So I perked up when I saw this Health magazine story about five bad foods that are actually good for the waistline.

Of course I'm not suggesting that you start pigging out on these every day, but if you eat them in moderation and in the right way, you can enjoy a little indulgence without feeling as guilty as you normally would. Yesterday I told you about ice cream and red meat, and for three more "bad foods" you can savor,

Go Go Grapefruit?

Remember the Grapefruit Diet from that wonderful decade the 80s? I just read a new variation of the diet – a half grapefruit with every meal, and I am not quite sure how I feel about it. While this new take on the diet is not nearly as extreme as just eating limitless portions of grapefruit and a few hard boiled eggs to keep you from fainting, it still seems a bit overboard.

A 2006 study found that beginning every meal with half a grapefruit can help shed unwanted pounds. In a 12-week study, participants who had half grapefruit starters at every meal, lost on average 3.6 pounds compared to others who were not eating the large citrus fruit and only lost on average one pound. Researchers think that plant compounds help to lower insulin levels and the smaller the amount of insulin in the blood after a meal, the more efficiently the body uses food for energy rather than storing it as fat.

I don't know about you, but the thought of starting every meal with a half a grapefruit for four months sounds unappetizing to me, and I love grapefruit. Grapefruit is in season right now though, so the fruit would be extra tasty and cheap. What about you? Tell me about it in the comments section below.
