If you weren't satisfied with an imported sparkler, look to Napa Valley for a lovely, affordable bottle of sparkling wine to sip tonight as the clock strikes midnight. I recently enjoyed Domaine Carneros Brut 2005 ($19.99) with a group of girlfriends. Brut refers to the wine's lack of sweetness — it's the term applied to the driest of sparkling wines — so if you enjoy dry bubbly you'll love this superb sparkler.

At a recent sparkling wine tasting, I was lucky enough to sample the only "green" sparkling wine in the United States. Jeriko's 2005 Brut sparkling wine is a luxurious bubbly made from 100 percent organically grown grapes. A blanc de blanc — white wine derived from white grapes — made in the French Champagne method, this wine is effervescent and light.

Yesterday afternoon I was fortunate enough to have a lovely leisurely lunch with the always effervescent YumSugar and equally intriguing geeksugar. After we were seated at a sophisticated round table our waitress, Diane, rolled out a champagne cart. Now if you've never had a champagne tray rolled to your table here is how it feels: lusciously luxurious.

Whether you're celebrating a wedding, honeymoon, graduation, or just the fact that it's Friday, you're probably raising a glass of champagne. Of course, not all sparkling wine is classified as champagne, and that's just the start of the confusing jargon. To help you choose the bubbly that's right for you, I've put together a guide to all of the relevant vocab, so you can sort out the doux from the cru.

I can't deny it, I love champagne. It's just one of those things, like painted nails, Marc Jacobs handbags, and vanilla cupcakes, that I wholeheartedly love. I find myself inventing reasons to pop open a bottle of bubbly and my desire to know more about champagne extends beyond the usual mmm-this-tastes-yummy interest.

Valentine's Day is a short week away and if you have not made it over to your local wine shop do so now. Why you wonder? Well you don't want them to sell out of the best champagne!

Like bitters, maraschino liqueur is an essential ingredient in many classic cocktails but serves an opposite purpose. The cherry-derived spirit offers just a hint of sweetness that's not at all syrupy. I particularly love cocktails that combine bitters and maraschino, as the competing elements come together for a very complex taste. The festive Fat Prince challenges (in a good way) the taste buds even more, with earthy rye and a float of Brut champagne.

Wine plays an important part of the Passover dinner known as the Seder. According to the tradition of the Haggadah — the book you read throughout the meal — one is supposed to drink four glasses of wine, which should be kosher. Besides kosher wine, offer guests sparkling or still water.
