Bring a New Mom...Dinner

I don't have any kids but a good friend of mine recently had her second cutie. I have a hard time resisting buying a cute outfit for the newborn but I know usually the new mom will already have enough clothes and babies grow out of everything so quickly. So rather than buying clothes, I made a delicious re-heatable dinner of chili verde with tortillas, avocados, sour cream, limes and cilantro. Of course, I couldn't resist the onesie that said "full of cuteness."

My thoughts, families need more time with their new addition, so at least one night, dinner is already ready! Did your friends bring you dinner when you had a new baby?

Renee says she couldn’t work for TMZ (which mocked Yamin’s mom’s death)

Renee Zellweger is promoting “Leatherheads,” and in a recent interview with Parade Magazine she revealed that she majored in journalism in college and originally wanted to be a reporter. According to Wikipedia, Zellweger graduated with a BA in English in 1991 from the University of Texas at Austin and was a good student who often made the Dean’s list. She ended up acting after she took a drama class to fulfill a fine arts credit requirement.

Renee plays a journalist in the football comedy “Leatherheads,” and the interviewer asked her if she could ever write for TMZ. She was really gracious in her response, but you can tell she thinks they’re mean:

You play a reporter who’s trying to uncover the unpleasant past of a pro-star. Did you feel a little like you were working for TMZ?

“I don’t know that I’d want that kind of responsibility of having the power to hurt someone with a public disclosure. But, ironically, I intended to be a reporter before I got into acting. I majored in journalism, so it was kind of fun to explore that. But I could never write a story that would have a big, negative impact on somebody’s life. I don’t think I’d sit well with that.”

TMZ recently covered former American Idol contestant Elliott Yamin’s mother’s death at 65 by concluding:

Yamin finished in 3rd place in 2006 on “Idol,” begind Katherine McPhee and Taylor Hicks - who, like Mrs. Yamin, will never be heard from again. (emphasis added)

TMZ eventually removed that super offensive last sentence after an enormous outcry from commentors. I’ve said some rude stuff too, you get kind of jaded with this job, but that’s just beyond mean.

The post on TMZ has over 500 comments now, with people saying things like “TMZ’s bizare and cruel response is inexcusable.” [Vivian]

Another commentor, jillkatz, said she met Elliot’s mom and that she was a great person. “I met Eliot’s mom two years ago when he was a contestant on IDOL. She appeared at every performance, and was so very proud of her son. We stood in line outside the IDOL studios after the show, where she introduced herself to me and my sister. Then she pulled us up front so she could introduce us to her son. He was so kind and so dear to his mom. We will miss such a lovely lady.”

When someone dies you’re supposed to say “our thoughts are with their family at this difficult time,” not try to come up with some clever snark. What is the gossip coming to? No wonder people like Renee equate it with knocking people down, it really does. Sorry Teri Hatcher, we suck too!

Jessica Simpson and Tony Romo Married in Mom’s Eyes

Jessica Simpson's mother says her daughter has remarried.

Jessica - who has been dating American football star Tony Romo since last
November - was leaving Los Angeles restaurant Chili's with her mom Tina on
Tuesday (03.25.08) when Tina revealed the 27-year-old star has secretly wed.

When asked if Jessica was planning to marry Tony, Tina laughed: "Jessica is
already married to Tony! What are you talking about?"

Jessica, who was previously married to singer Nick Lachey, giggled and added
to gossip website TMZ.com: "Well I guess if my mom said it, it must be
true!"

Earlier this year, Tony admitted he was thinking about marrying Jessica -
but not yet.

The 27-year-old Dallas Cowboys star said: "I'm sure I'll get married one
day. I don't know when though."

Tony's close friend Michael Starr also fueled wedding rumors by saying: "I
think they are going to get married."

Meanwhile, Jessica has reportedly splashed out $3.47 million on a mansion in
the Forest Hills' gated community in Nashville, Tennessee.

The property, which is known as The Queen of Northumberland, boasts seven
bedrooms, eight bathrooms and a cinema.

Kate Hudson: “I’m a stricter mom than my mom”

Kate Hudson is glad she is a strict mother because her son Ryder has become the perfect child.

The Almost Famous star chose to strongly discipline her child – with ex-husband Chris Robinson – because her mother Goldie Hawn let her run wild as a kid.

And the Fool’s Gold actress thinks her tough tactics have paid dividends because the four-year-old is so well behaved.

‘When I had Ryder, suddenly there were a lot of rules,’ she says. ‘I’m much stricter about things like manners than I thought I’d be. My mom wasn’t strict at all. He had a couple [of tantrums]. He had a couple and I would just stare at him and wait. He would realize I wasn’t doing anything – unaware I trying desperately to remain calm inside – and he would stop. It worked.’

Racoon Mom

Yesterday in the wee hours of the night I got an e-mail from my friend titled “from one raccoon to another”…I thought she had a hidden camera in my office and could see the days-long make up smudged around my tired eyes. But as I clicked on the link in her e-mail, I began to read an article referring to the newest sniglet, “Raccoon Mom”.

(If you are not sure what a singlet is, it is any word that does not appear in the dictionary, but should…our other favorite being Mompert)

It seems that a new phenomena is taking over the moms of today. With the day full of doing everything for the kids, dad and family, moms are taking to the night to have a little time to themselves - hence the term the raccoon. More and more moms are opting to stay up late after kids go to bed to do their favorite things. It may be as simple as watching their favorite television program, doing a loved hobby or just getting uninterrupted time to clean; moms are forsaking sleep for a little peace and quiet time.

For the last 9 to 12 months I find myself doing most of my stuff late into the night. Once my little ones are down, I have the run of the house to unwind, relax and do the things I enjoy without that relentless tugging on my pant leg or plastic toys whizzing past my head. I find that I can get more done, fully enjoy what I am doing or just veg-out if I need to without the demands of anyone else. In fact, I have admitted to most of my friends to not call before 9:00am because I am still not fully awake, having been up late the night before.

When I read that article I was delighted and thrilled to hear I was not the only mother out there sacrificing sleep to review the Oscar dresses on You Tube, finish a scrapbook page or read one more chapter of a Nicolas Sparks novel. Sometimes I find my willingness to still be doing something at 2:00am a bit strange considering I am too tired for sex, laundry or cleaning the bathroom. Yet I somehow seem to get a second wind and ultimately get things done when most others would prefer to be sleeping.

Glam mom

I know there are plenty of moms out there that deserve to win this contest just as much as my mom does, but to me my mom is the best mother that anybody could ever have. No she didn't do anything extremely courageous or have her own segment on Oprah. Its the normal everyday things that she does that puts above all the rest.
My mother got pregnant with me right out of high school at the age of 19. Her boyfriend at the time, my father was thrilled but didn't quite do his share. He rarely came around to check on her and when he did it seem insincere. On Nov. 18 ,1989 she gave birth to a baby girl three months too early. The doctors said that I had to be kept at the hospital in an incubator for at least three months. My lungs and heart hadn't developed all the way and I had a small chance of being a dwarf or mentally retarded. To this day my mom still tells me how hard it was for her to leave me there and return home with nothing. She visited the hospital everyday to feed and hold me. My father never came once.
Now, at 18 I am at the top of my class and plan to graduate May 2008 and attend Texas Women's University. None of this would have happened if I didn't have such a wonderful mom who cared for me. I tell her everyday of how much I admire her strength and how much I appreciate her working 12 hours a day just to support me. I thank my mom for being both my mother and father and always being there when I needed her. This is way I believe my mother is the ultimate glam mom.

My Earth Mom

My mom is the ultimate Earth Mom, because of everything she does and is...

Some moms have a certain perfume they always wear, or maybe something they cook that makes their house smell great, and that is how you think of them. But to me my mom smells like sunlight, like fresh mowed grass, and like the beach.

Thanks to my mom, all of my fondest memories of childhood have to do with the outdoors and loving the earth. Age 5, lazy summer days outside, running through the sprinkler, and plucking luscious cherries from our little backyard tree. Age 10, evening walks to play at the local park, discussing nature and life and everything inbetween, then picking raspberries from our garden to put on our ice cream for dessert. Age 15, sunbathing by the river together with our latest favorite books, laughing and diving in the ice cold water for a few moments of shocking refreshment.

She loves plants and gardening and has always grown her own fruits and veggies, plus gorgeous flowers. When I was a kid it was the raspberries and artichokes, sunflowers and cherries. Now she has blueberries, strawberries and rhubarb, rhododendrons and irises and overflowing cherry blossom trees, and many others that I can't even name.

Now at 25, when I pick up my 3-year-old son from "Grammie's" house, it is not surprising to find him with blueberry-stained lips and cheeks, dirty from head to toe from adventures in the yard, and the biggest grin imaginable. And I am happy and proud and thankful, that my son will grow up knowing such an amazing woman, that he will grow up with the love of the Earth that my mom has, that I was raised to have, that everyone should have.

Jamie Lynn Spears’ mom and Miley Cyrus’ mom have heart to heart

The moms of teen queens Jamie Lynn Spears and Miley Cyrus had a heart-to-heart while enjoying some strong coffee. The two famous moms were seen talking at an outside table at a Century City Starbucks on February 27. What they were discussing is anyone’s guess, and Star Magazine is all too willing to speculate for us. They say that Miley Cyrus’ mom, Tish, must have been asking Lynn Spears how to weather controversy and keep her famous daughter out of trouble. Lynn Spears is not the person to give advice on how to raise a celebrity daughter. She has two, and the more sane one is pregnant at 16. From the way the conversation is described, it sounds like Lynne is the one asking for advice, and not the other way around as Star claims.

“They were sitting across from each other at an outdoor table early in the evening,” an eyewitness tells Star. Both were dressed casually, but there wasn’t anything casual about their conversation. “Lynne looked upset and was doing all the talking, while Tish listened intently, nodding her head in agreement. Lynne’s ex-husband, Jamie, was sitting at another table close by, talking with another guy, but they didn’t get involved with the women.

The reason for the Feb. 27 down-low get together…? A source tells Star: “The Spears and Cyrus families have become good friends, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they arranged that chat so that Lynne could share with Tish the lessons she learned as she’d tried to deal with and care for Britney and Jamie Lynn.”

The last year has obviously been tough on Jamie Lynn, 16, - and Miley hasn’t been immune to controversy either. A number of “naughty” personal photos of the 15-year-old have shown up on the Web… “Lynne’s advice certainly can’t hurt!”

Maybe Tish and Lynne were talking about the best place to get Restylane injections and Lynne was upset because the guy she uses screwed up her lips the last time. It really does sound like Lynne was upset about something, and she has a lot to be upset about. Things are improving for one of her daughters, but she’s not out of the woods yet. Her younger daughter is barely out of high school and is due to have a baby soon. By some accounts Lynne will be the primary caregiver for her latest grandchild. You would think that the woman needs good friends to confide in, given her situation.

You Know You’re A Mom When…

You know you are a mom when everyone in the house has a cold, cough and feels miserable and you somehow are immune, looking after each of them, comforting them, nursing them back to health… only to get struck by it twice as hard once they are all well.

This afternoon, I told my son I needed to lie down after finally getting the cold he and his sister have been battling for over a week. Immediately he got his favorite blanket and brought it to me on the couch. He covered me up; making sure every bit of me was under it. Then he patted and rubbed my shoulder giving me the kindest and loving look. I melted for a moment that this little boy had the power, grace and kindness to care for me knowing I was sick. It was a beautiful moment that he topped off like a cherry with a wink and kiss on my nose before he fluttered off to do what little boys do.

It was a moment I will remember forever; it was the sugar-candy-coating of motherhood.
