Portland man gets probation after stabbing ex-girlfriend's pet fish
By Aimee Green, The Oregonian
October 13, 2009, 1:18PM
A 27-year-old Southeast Portland man who beat his ex-girlfriend and then stabbed her pet fish and left it impaled in her apartment has been sentenced to two years of probation and a psychological evaluation.
An attorney for Donald Earl Fite III said he didn’t want to talk about the details of the assault, but that stabbing the fish was “a very low point” in his client’s life."He is absolutely mortified and ashamed about what he did to the fish," said attorney Tom MacNair today in Multnomah County Circuit Court. Fite had no criminal history and declined to comment, saying only that his attorney had said it all. According to an affidavit filed with the court, Sarah Harris had broken up with Fite, but returned to her East Burnside Street apartment in Portland last July 25 to find Fite lying on her bed. Fite wanted to get back together, but Harris didn't. When she told him she had plans that evening, Harris refused to let her leave the room she was in, the bathroom, according to the affidavit.

God's plan for our family dinner
Dear Family,It's been too long since my last entry. Anyways, as I continued to read the book Prayer by Philip Yancey; the thought came to me as I realized how God actually arranged our dinner last nite. As Abigail had indicated a wish to eat out as a means to have a break from her studying and we know she has made the effort to study with more discipline and this has also impacted on Amanda who now is getting into the groove of really studying/revising.

Azazel Walking
When Castiel and I got back to the institute we walked in straight through the front door. "Why were allowed to leave?" I said asking him, whispering.

The Tax Capital of the World
States are raising taxes despite the 'stimulus'; New York is No. 1
Like the old competition to have the world's tallest building, New York can't resist having the nation's highest taxes. So after California raised its top income tax rate to 10.55% last month, Albany's politicians leapt into action to reclaim high-tax honors.

Government wants saltwater anglers to register, pay fee
By RICHARD DEGENER Staff Writer, 609-463-6711
Published: Thursday, June 12, 2008
From the Press of Atlantic City: http://www.pressofatlanticcity.com/186/story/180852.html
Saltwater anglers would need to register with the federal government to go fishing next year, and starting in 2011 pay an annual fee between $15 and $25.
The goal of the proposal is to assemble a better database of recreational fishermen so they can be interviewed more thoroughly on what they catch. This information would be used to better manage fisheries.

Subject: And then the fight started
My wife sat down on the couch next to me as I was flipping channels. She
asked, 'What's on the TV?'
I said, 'Dust.'

What goes up must come down. Last year at this time, we commented on the rise of irrational exuberance. In 2008, the world landed with a loud and well-documented thud.
