On my many shopping excursions this month, (too many to count!), I’ve noticed that stores are carrying lots of items with exposed zippers. Function now meets fashion! Everything from dresses, shoes, bags, belts and even headbands are covered in zippers.

Of debt and deadbeats

From The Economist print edition
A new culture war is brewing over capitalism
SEVENTEEN Uncle Sams were seen begging on the streets of Washington, DC, this week. They were a sad sight, with their slightly bedraggled red, white and blue hats and their cardboard signs with the hand-scrawled plea: “I want YOU to give me $12 trillion.” It was a publicity stunt, of course, staged by DefeatTheDebt.com, a fiscally hawkish pressure group. But it captured something important about the national mood.

**Quote from Chaske Spencer "I think Sam is a person that has been thrown into extraordinary circumstances. He's had to sacrifice a lot. Sam is like the chief of police.

An Ill Wind is Breaking For Our President
T. Coddington Van Voorhees VII
Editor at Large, the National Topsider
Another Labor Day weekend wafts into Montauk, borne as always upon a chill wind of melancholy; a breeze that ushers in blithe spirits for the coming gay lawn soirees, the final chukkers of the summer polo leagues, the annual Montauk-to-Newport gin barrel regatta. Everyone in Washington knows the record Federal deficits and debt are out of control and can't continue. President Obama knows it. The ultraliberal Democrat Congressional leadership knows it.

Since the dawn of time, women have gone through long, arduous, painful processes for the sake of beauty. But none is more controversial than the bikini wax. Though the results seem cleaner and more sanitary than the alternative, bikini waxes are sort of hazardous.

In model terms, Lara Stone is what her own agency calls an "exception" because, on her "heavier days" she's a US size 4-6. This, of course is in relation to the typical size 0-2 model. The mesmerising effect, though, that she has had on so many powerful people in the industry can make at least a few people do a double-take on that standard.

NEW YORK — A new John Lennon exhibit is particularly emotional for his widow, Yoko Ono. Besides Lennon's guitars, letters and other personal effects, it also includes a paper bag containing the bloody clothes from the night he was shot to death.
Ono received the items from the medical examiner in December 1980, when the former Beatle was gunned down in New York City at age 40.
