Skin-Smoothing Coffee Scrub

This is my personal recipe for homemade body scrub that makes my skin baby-bottom soft! The lemon juice helps lighten dark aread and baking soda is a good skin cleansing agent.

Ingedients:
* 1 c sugar
* 1/2 c olive oil
* 1/4 c coarse ground coffee
* 1 tsp cinnamon
* 1 tsp lemon juice
* 1 tsp baking soda

1) Combine all ingredients; mix well.
2) Perching on the edge of the tub, drop a dollop of scrub on a shower pouf or loofah and briskly massage dry skin, working your way up from your toes. Spend more time on rough and dry areas like cracked heels, knees and elbows.
3) Step into shower and rinse off with warm water.
4) Use a moisturizing body wash on a body pouf (Oil of Olay Creme Ribbons is one of my faves); lather well and rinse.
5) After drying off, massage skin with a light body or massage oil (I use baby oil or vitamin 3 oil because I have dry skin)

Salon Pedicure At Home - EASY Step by Step

Even if the snow is falling and you aren't
wearing your sandals or walking barefoot
in the garden.

It is good to still pamper your feet or get them
'winterized'!

Here are some easy at home pedicure steps
to save you money from going to a salon:

Pamper Prep
Position a chair behind a clean, wide bucket filled with hot water.
Fold a bath towel into a square and place it at the bottom of the bucket. This will give your feet a comfortable surface to rest on when you soak them.

Add half a cup of epsom salt, a natural disinfectant. I also like to throw in a few capfuls of Johnson + Johnson Soothing Vapor Bath for Colds. It contains rosemary, eucalyptus and menthol -- three therapeutic, cleansing herbs that make the room you're in smell just like a spa.

Grooming Guide

Use a cotton pad soaked with nail-polish remover to take off old polish. If your cuticles are dry, add a drop of olive oil to the pad before using it on your nails.
Clip your toenails straight across with clippers.
Use a nail file to smooth the edges, including the sides. Best shape: square with rounded edges.

Soothe Your Soles

Soak your feet in the hot water for five minutes, then rest them on the edge of the bucket.
Dip a foot file, in the water, then use it to smooth your heels, the balls of your feet and the outsides of your pinkie toes.
Pat feet dry with a towel.

To get cuticles under control, use the edge of the nail file to push your cuticles back, then a nail brush dipped in an exfoliating scrub, like some of the homemade exfoliating scrubs we have posted on body shoppe, to clean the area where your nail meets your skin.
If you feel that you must get rid of your cuticles, have a pro do it in a salon so you don't end up with painful, ingrown toenails.
Rinse, then dry feet and apply a generous amount of super-moisturizing foot lotion or cream. If you have someone around - let him/her massage it into your feet and calves.
Wash the moisturizer off your toenails with soap and water and let them dry.

Polish How-To's

Create space between toes with a foam toe separator.
Apply one coat of base coat, two coats of color and one coat of top coat.
Use a Q-tip moistened with nail-polish remover to remove any polish that missed the mark.
Let your polish dry for a few hours before putting on close-toed shoes.
Apply one coat of top coat three days after your pedicure, then every third day after that to keep polish from chipping.

For glowing skin...

If your a bit like myself and your skins not so bright during the winter, you can get your glow back with a touch of moisturiser and a damp face cloth.
First of all use a rich moisturiser such as nivea 99p from most shops and chemists on your skin. Work from the chin upwards in circular motions for about two minutes massaging your skin. after you have rubbed it in. Add some more and place a hot wet flannel or face cloth over your face for a few minutes. When the two minutes is up gently rub the excess moisturiser from your face with the cloth and voile'! Instantly glowing skin that looks less grey, more J-Lo!

Diy facial for visibly clear skin...

A trip to the beauty room for a facial can cost more that our monthly gym membership from most places. It feels good, although you can benefit from the same effects by using a few trusty day to day products at home.

First step: First of all dampen skin and gently rub your usual exfoliating facial scrub onto your skin in circular motions. Instead of rinsing it off, place a hot damp flannel over the skin for two minutes to open up the pores.

Second step: The next step is to use place some oil in your hands and gently massage this into the skin until it sinks in to get glowing skin. Superdrug do a great skin oil for as little as £1, if you don't have this, burst open some evening primrose capsules and massage these onto the skin instead.

Step 3: Once the oil has been absorbed, work in a face mask and leave to dry in for ten minutes. Choose your face mask depending on your skin type. Although I find original mudd mask 99p works best on most skin types.

Step 4: Slather on some day or night time moisturiser, depending on the time of day. Use a tissue to blot the moisturiser from your t-zone area and also the areas that you find get oily during the summer.

By the end of this, you should have gorgeous, clear and refreshed feeling skin which will make you feel ten times more confident! If you have any problems with your skin such as breakouts, apply a spot treatment cream over night to blemishes. A cheap alternative I find that works is Oxy- On the Spot cream, which contains Benzoyl peroxide - great for treating spots. You can buy it from most chemists and stores such as Savers, Superdrugs and Boots.

No more fake tan hands....

If your desperate for a sunkissed glow but hate the after effects, especially the tangoed hands after applying fake tan, one simple way to get rid of the stains is washing your hands with toothpaste and scrubbing the fake tan off with it. It works!

Supersoft fuzz-free legs...

If your after super-soft and perfecntly smooth legs, but have ran out of your favourite shaving gel, lather conditioner onto your legs and shave like you would with your regular gel or foam. This is a great tip as it actually leaves legs softer than before!
Once your fuzz-free make sure you massage in some thick body butter onto your legs while their still damp. This will lock in the moisture for longer. If your pins still aren't soft enough for your taste. Here's a strange tip - use your tub of vaseline to rub into your legs before you put your pjs on at night and also wrap the legs in clingfilm to lock in the softness. It may seem weird but it actually works!

Big Doe Eyes....

If your after Bridgette-bardot bambi eyes, then makeup is your best bet. First of all get hold of your lash curlers, mascara, black eyeliner, white pencil liner a dark powder shadow and shadow brush.
1) First of all curl your lashes to ensure you have massive curles on your lashes. This will instantly open up your eyes and make them seem wider.
2) Use your best mascara and start the wand right at the very roots of your eyelashes. Sweep up, ensuring you get all of the mascara on the lashes. Finish with a second coat of black mascara and also coat the lower lashes and very tips of your top eyelashes again. This will lengthen them even more.
3) The next step is to use black eyeliner only on the top lid. Using it on the bottom will only make your eyes appear smaller. If your using a liquid pencil and find it hard to draw a steady line, start at the outer corner or your eye and draw a small line. Next draw a smaller line joining up to this. Finish with lining up all the small lines until your full upper lid is lined. Then you can flick the black liner up at the outer corners for feline eyes. A great alternative to liquid liner, which is my favourite is Mac's gel eyeliner. This is applied with an angled brush and is longlasting, super dark and great for eyeliner lovers. The Mac counter can also show you how to apply it quickly and easily.
4) Your eyes should already be looking full and fluttery, however if you want to go further, you can line the inside of your lower lid with the white pencil to open eyes up even more. This subtle technique makes the white of your eyes look whiter, which in turn gives you bigger and brighter looking eyes.
5) Finally, if your handy with the eyeshadow brush, you can sweep a dark smokey eyeshadow on the outer corners of the top and bottom of the eyes in a <shape>. This makes the eyes stand out more and you will notice the difference once you have mastered this technique.

Winterize Your Body

No matter what your skin type, winter dryness doesn't discriminate: It can occur anywhere on the body, from the top of your head to the soles of your feet. The result of cold temperatures, whipping winds, and indoor heating, "winter dryness is also one of the main reasons that skin often looks older than its years," says Katie Rodan, M.D., adjunct clinical associate professor of dermatology at Stanford University School of Medicine. But you don't have to spend another season letting dryness and inflammation age you. "Skin that's well moisturized always looks healthier and younger," says Dr. Rodan. How exactly do you care for the skin you're in?

To do:

Avoid harsh soaps (like the ones most men and teens use); they strip natural oils. "'Squeaky-clean' isn't good - it's an indication of dryness," explains New York City dermatologist Amy Wechsler, M.D. Instead, try a cleanser for sensitive skin or a hydrating formula that leaves behind a layer of lipids - even after you rinse.Try: CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser ($12), which is loaded with the lipids known as ceramides.

Exfoliate regularly to get rid of dead skin, which moisturizers can't penetrate. But don't rub too hard, warns Wechsler. "While dryness can be environmental or genetic, sometimes it's brought on or worsened by something we do to our skin - like overscrubbing," she says. Her Rx: Once a week, use a light exfoliant.Try: Therapy Systems Amazingly Gentle Face Scrub ($34) or Bliss Steep Clean Body Polish ($42).

When you step out of the shower, moisturize within three minutes. Post-shower dampness is good for your face if you seal it in; let it evaporate, and you'll end up even drier, says Susan C. Taylor, M.D., director of Society Hill Dermatology in Philadelphia.Try: Clinique Continuous Rescue Antioxidant Moisturizer ($40) or Nivea Body Essentially Enriched Daily Lotion ($7).

Skip hot baths - they drain the water out of your skin. A better choice: quick, lukewarm showers. In fact, ask yourself whether you even need a daily shower. "Research shows that skin loses 25 percent of its natural moisturizers with each wash," says Melissa Katz, an R&D scientist and cleansing manager at the Unilever North American Regional Technical Center.

What to look for in exfoliators and polishes

1. Be a gentle scrubber – Older skin needs careful treatment. Keep your exfoliation routine gentle and look for a product that has spherical grains that won’t scratch your skin. Always exfoliate on damp skin. Gentle rubbing in a circular movement for a maximum of two minutes will remove dead skin and encourage fresh new cells to flourish.

2. New cells, new skin – Young skin renews itself every month. As we get older the process slows down, so gentle exfoliation will help to maintain the cycle of renewal, scrubbing away dead cells and leaving you with smooth skin – but keep the treatment to once a week.

3. Non-abrasive retexturizing – Don’t be tempted to use a body scrub on the delicate skin of your face. Good quality face exfoliators use calibrated diamond shaped crystals for precision removal of dead skin cells from the epidermal layer. Body scrubs contain larger, rougher granules that will irritate and inflame sensitive faces.

4. Natural verses synthetic – Natural abrasive scrubs like walnut kernels work best on younger skins. Synthetic options commonly found in microdermabrasion creams contain particles that are smooth and spherical. Especially designed for older skin, they will not cut or scratch it.

5. Lookout for AHAS – Traditionally based on natural acids derived from fruits and plants, alphahydroxy acids (AHAs) are now manufactured synthetically. They act as a mild exfoliant by dissolving the “glue” that binds skin cells together, thus allowing old cells to be shed in favor of new young ones. Non-abrasive, they are available in exfoliating creams or mask.

6. Search out salicylic acid – This is the only betahydroxy acid that works mainly as an exfoliant to improve the skin’s color and texture. It is an oil soluble acid that can penetrate into the pores which contain sebum, and exfoliate the dead skin cells that build up inside.

7. Abrasive overdose – Don’t overdo the exfoliating treatments. Dermatologists have seen a rise in the number of patients coming in for help after too harsh therapies. After the age of 35 you need to focus on the protection and maintenance of your skin rather than correcting it.

8. Refine with a pore minimizer – Specially formulated cleaners to reduce the appearance of large pores usually do so via a thermal warming object, which opens the pres. The cream has inbuilt cleaners and exfoliators that clean and slough away the debris and tighten the skin for more refined appearance.

9. DIY Damage – Always treat your skin gently, as the older you are, the thinner it gets. Vigorous rubbing during exfoliation or microdermabrasion treatments will increase the skin’s sensitivity and lead to a loss of pigmentation.

10. Polish your own skin – Exfoliants and microdermabrasion treatments will slough away layers of dead skin cells to leave fresh unblemished skin that is glowing with vitality. Gentle exfoliation will help to erase fine lines and wrinkles and it stimulates oil production and circulation, which in turn encourages new skin cells to grow.

Natural beauty products can be good for your body and good for your wallet. You can get excellent results and pamper yourself without the chemicals and without the price of a spa. Just think, you could save up to $90 at home if you choose your own natural frugal spa solution rather than making a trip to the professional spa.

GREAT FACIAL SCRUB
Kiwi is one of my favorite fruits. To me it tastes like a combination of strawberries and grapes. But there is another use for kiwi. If I can wrestle some away from the snack counter, I used it as a facial scrub. Kiwi packs a double benefit for facial skin. The fruit contains vitamin C that can fight free-radical damage to your skin, while the seeds in the kiwi act as a gentle and natural exfoliate to scrub away dead skin. You'll be left with smooth, even skin.

To apply the kiwi as a facial scrub, first slice and peel the fruit. The mash the pulp of the kiwi using a fork. Splash a little water on your face. Next, apply the kiwi to your face and neck as a scrub, working gently in a circular motion for about a minute. Keep the scrub away from the delicate eye and lip area. Rinse your skin with warm water and then pat it dry.

FIGHT DRY SKIN NATURALLY
This next idea is wonderful in the winter when you and your family may be suffering from dry, cracked skin on your hands. Those cracks can be quite painful, so head them off before they occur. Go out and get some almond oil. You will only need about a teaspoon for each treatment, so the overall cost per use is actually low. Almond oil has a nice light texture plus plenty of vitamin E, so it will penetrate your layers of dry skin to heal your skin and protect both your hands and your nails from damage. Plus it smells lovely when you use it.

Run a teaspoon of the oil onto your hands and nails. Next, get a small warm towel (warm it in the dryer for a minute or have it out in the sun for an hour) and wrap it around tour hands. Relax and let the oil penetrate for at least five minutes. You can wipe off excess oil if you wish, but avoid washing your hands for at least 30 minutes because the oil will continue to be absorbed into your skin.

So last Friday, I went to the Macy's Beauty Event at Philosophy. I wanted to try somethings and to replenish the skin care line I was running out of. I wanted to attend the event for the freebies and to try out products I have been eyeing. I have been using the Make-Up Optional Kit for a little over 3 months and so far I love it. I still use my Oil Olay lotion w/ sunscreen in the morning but I use the Philosophy cream at night. There are three weeks worth of the Microdelivery Peel in the MO kit but I just wanted something that could really help with the unclogging, I just felt that the Microdelivery was more of a scrub- it polishes very well don't get me wrong but I have heard the Oxygen Peel is better and lately my skin has been a little congested especially during that time of the month.

So I picked up:

superwash for oily skin (I can't use products with SA or BP because it makes my pimples turn brown)
