NY Times: Diddy’s Acting is Commanding and Fierce

Sean Combs (the artist sometimes known as Diddy) is getting high marks for his acting in the ABC special, A Raisin in the Sun.

Says the New York Times about the TV special, “There are no mediocre performances here… That Mr. Combs makes his desires seem like more than empty materialism must come in some part from the fact that he has been hungry at the same table… The play’s most poignant speech is his, and he delivers it with all of the dignified vengeance it demands, showing us that one of the great advantages of money is the power it provides to tell the wrong people off… Mr. Combs commanding and fierce.”

I rented this on a whim, 'cause everything else at Blockbuster looked stinky. I didn't know a thing about it, but WOW. I actually think it might take a spot in my Top 10.

This description from IMDB sums it up as best as possible, I think:

"Trapped in his mother's Lower East Side apartment, sixteen-year-old Finn (Anton Yelchin) wants nothing more than to escape New York and spend the summer in South America studying the Iskanani Indians, or "Fierce People," with the anthropologist father he's never met. But Finn's dreams are shattered when he is arrested in a desperate effort to help his drug-dependent mother, Liz (Diane Lane), who scrapes by working as a masseuse. Determined to get their lives back on track, Liz moves the two of them into a guesthouse on the vast country estate of her ex-client, the aging aristocratic billionaire, Ogden C. So, add it to your Netflix queues. A little funny, a little sad, all-around quirky and enthralling - very excellent.

Now, a new era of stars inspires their generation by re-telling an old story. „I don’t think a lot of people know what options the first all-female rock ‘n’ roll band had,“ Kristen Stewart told SELF during an interview in New York earlier this week. „A lot of girls don’t realize there was a time when you couldn’t do something, like you really couldn’t do that [be in a band]–it was unexpected and looked down upon. We’ve grown up thinking we can be happy and do whatever we want, but back in the day, in terms of attitude and being who you are just personally, you used to not be able to be.“ The movie, which focus on the relationship between edgy punk-rocker Joan Jett and Bowie-obsessed Bardot lookalike Cherie Curie, is as much a raw, gritty look at the L.A. rock scene as it is a cautionary coming-of-age tale. As Jett, Kristen Stewart has found an outlet for all the buttoned-up angst of the Twilight franchise–from her jet-black hair to rough voice, she channels the musician’s nervous energy and fierce passion to make her dream a reality to a tee. Dakota Fanning plays her counterpart, the 15-year-old Curie who, after being plucked from the roller-rink crowd, goes from sex kitten to drug addict seemingly overnight. The chemistry between the two actresses is as electric as their eyeliner. So who inspires these stars? „My mom,“ Fanning told us. „She’s my best friend and with me every day from when I started up until now. My mom actually read [the script] first and told me I needed to read it. My parents know this is something I want to do forever, and they understand and support me.“ „I’ve grown up with really strong women, so definitely my mom,“ Stewart agreed. „I haven’t had that many role models, but Joan has become one.“ Having the opportunity to actually work with the real people their characters were based on was also an inspiring experience for both of the actresses. „I guess in a way it’s easier to play characters that are whole and complete, real people,“ said Fanning. „You’re not playing this figure or person that somebody make up. You’re actually doing something real. But at the same time, when you know a person, everything changes your perception of it. But as long as they feel real to you, it doesn’t matter if they are or not.“ But singing in front of those „real people“? “It was never something that was easy,“ Stewart told us. „You don’t know if you can do something until you do it, and we don’t rehearse a whole lot so it didn’t feel real until it really was the real deal. When we did ‘Cherry Bomb,’ I couldn’t bring myself to hold the guitar right. Joan was there and I thought she was mad at me or something and thinking oh my god, you did horrible. And then it ended up being great.“ As for Fanning, „You have the responsibility of singing like Cherie Curie, singing a song like ‘Cherry Bomb’ that’s so iconic to so many people. It was completely intimidating!“ Last night, The Runaways stars–including Stewart, Fanning, Jett, Curie, Michael Shannon, Riley Keough, director Floria Sigismondi–arrived in New York City to celebrate the premiere at Soho’s Sunshine Cinema. Bad Boy R&B singer Cassie will release her as-yet-untitled sophomore album on May 20, and she says although "I hate to use the words grown-up, I really, really did since the last time around."

"I guess I grew up a lot but I'm still in essence the same person," says the 21-year-old singer. "Lots has changed in my life, stuff that has made me think about things differently. I'm more vulnerable and you can hear my vocals better this time around. There's real emotion..."

The album features production from Seven, Mario Winans, Bryan Michael Cox, Eric Hudson, Sean C and LV and mentor Ryan Leslie, who discovered the Connecticut native. There are no guest features recorded as of yet.

And although a first single hasn't been released, Cassie assures it will be "a club record -- something fun and danceable." Possible contenders include the Seven-produced "My House," the flirty "Thirsty" and the concept track "Push It"

Challenge 7 Workout review

I have a few that I rely on:
Jillian MIchael's 30 Day shred. I love this. When I did it the first time back in November, I was barely able to do Level 1. Now I've gone through it twice straight and then I did the 30 day slimdown which incorporates Burn Fat, Boost Metabolism and No More Trouble Zones. When I finish the BFBM, I feel energized. However, the NMTZ still whips me. I'm not quite there yet on it.
Then I also got the 10 minute solution Cardio Kickboxing with the 2# weighted gloves. I LOVE this. I can choose from 5 different 10 minute workouts:
Knockout Body blast which mixes combinations of cardio and strenth moves for tightening and toning all over. I like to end my workout with this one.
Fat attack--Punch, kick and strike away flab. I like starting with this one to get my heart rate up.
Fierce and Fabulous abs--I find that some of the moves in this really raises the HR.
Ultimate Upper body--another favorite of mine
Kickbox Cross train. I haven't mastered the moves in this one yet. I'm still working on them.
Each time I do this workout, the order is different. Tonight I did: Fat attack, Fierce & fabulous abs, Ultimate upper body, Fat attack and Knockout body blast.
In addition to these, I also have incorporated a strength training program: Sunday--Lower Body, Monday--Upper Body; Tuesday--Core; Thursday--Lower Body; Friday--Upper Body; Saturday--Core

Why Reality Shows Are So Popular

Switch on the television at any time of the day, you are almost sure to find a reality show on some channel. Chances are that you have watched at least one of these shows and have taken a fancy to following the minutiae of the contestants’ lives as they unfold on the small screen right in front of your eyes. Just what is it about reality shows that make them so popular and grabs your attention like nobody’s business?

The contestants in a reality TV show are not acting; they are being who they are in real life. The producers and the editors of the show create a captivating story line as they go snip-snip with their editorial scissors. The result is pure, unadulterated entertainment, much more potent that any soap opera that you may have seen.

Do people like reality shows because they are real? Or do they just seem real? Observe yourself the next time you watch a reality show. Even if it is something as exaggerated and bogus as a starlet’s bridegroom hunt, you find yourself instantly drawn to it and caught up with the minute details. You may also find yourself unwittingly switching back to the channel to catch up with what’s going on even if you manage to channel surf to another show. Reality shows are so captivating possibly because you are getting a ringside view of other people’s ostensibly private lives.

Take any reality show and there will be some element of competition in it. The more fierce the competition, the higher the ratings. Take the popular reality TV shows – Survivor, Big Brother or American Idol for instance. We like it when people bully each other, call each other names and engage in backstabbing all in the name of winning the competition. There is a certain voyeuristic pleasure that we derive, out of watching others fight it out and sometimes completely humiliate each other, all within the safety of our couch with a bowl of popcorn in hand.

Of course, there is a smattering of good too about the entire gamut of reality TV. Ordinary people from small towns get to participate and compete against contestants from across the country; the show is a huge platform to showcase their talents. People are, and always will be, obsessed with fame and fortune. The reality show contestants have their mini-celebrity status for the duration of the show and for a short while after. Some even manage to grab a couple of new shows banking on the popularity or notoriety that the reality show had generated for them.

Love it or hate it, reality TV is here to stay. Producers will continue producing reality shows, big brands will continue endorsing them and we will continue watching them as long as the average human being continues to derive much pleasure from being a fly on the wall.
