I know it looks really hard, but once you break it down step by step and practice it a lot, you&#039;ll be flying like a crow in no time. Not only does it feel amazing to be balancing solely on your hands, but this pose really works your core and upper body, so it&#039;ll make you feel strong inside and out.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This pose is ultimately done with your arms straight, which takes a ton of upper body and abdominal strength. Once you can do this easily with your elbows bent then you can work on straightening your arms.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Begin in a &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.fitsugar.com/948666&quot; &gt;Wide Squat&lt;/a&gt;. Place your palms firmly on the ground in front of you. Be sure to spread your fingers as wide as you can, and press into your fingertips to release any pressure in your wrists.
&lt;li&gt;Now straighten your legs slightly and place your knees as high up onto your triceps as possible, toward your armpits.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Shift your weight forward into your hands and see if you can lean the weight of your knees into the backs of your arms. Then try lifting one foot off the ground and then the other. If you can bring your toes together, you&#039;ll feel more compact and it&#039;ll be easier to balance. Squeeze your knees together slightly and pull your belly button in towards your spine to give you a sense of lightness.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Stay here for five breaths or you can work on straightening your arms. It&#039;s OK if you lose your balance and fall over. It took me a ton of tries to be able to stay balanced. Just keep trying!&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;After you&#039;ve had enough, release your feet down to the ground and come into &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.fitsugar.com/1003602&quot; &gt;Child&#039;s pose&lt;/a&gt; to give your lower back and upper body a break. &lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Not connecting breath with movements:&lt;/b&gt; For every movement in your yoga practice, there is a breath pattern that goes along with it. For example, to start a &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.fitsugar.com/Sun-Salutation-Video-Celebrate-Winter-Solstice-234339&quot; &gt;Sun Salutation&lt;/a&gt;, you inhale to raise your arms up, and exhale to fold forward. Connecting your breath to your movements gives your yoga practice a sense of fluidity. This not only helps create a sense of calm, but the breath keeps you mindful, focused, and aware of each movement, which can help prevent injuries and improve balance.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Keeping your belly soft:&lt;/b&gt; Proper breathing in yoga involves bringing your breath into your chest, feeling your ribs expand and deflate with each breath. You can do this by drawing your navel in toward your spine and keeping your abs engaged, so when you inhale, you see your chest fill up rather than your belly. Aside from helping you breathe properly (which will help you with the first no-no), keeping your belly engaged also protects your lower back, which can prevent pain or injury.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Tensing when unnecessary:&lt;/b&gt; Clenched toes, scrunched shoulders (as shown above), and white knuckles aren&#039;t exactly the picture of relaxation, are they? I realize some challenging poses takes every ounce of strength and attention to hold for five breaths, but make sure to constantly scan your body for unnecessary areas of tightness. Make a conscious effort to relax the muscles that don&#039;t need to be working overtime.&lt;/li&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Like many strength-training cardio classes, Aspen Ascent focuses on circuit training with supersets grouped by muscle area, to pump up your heart rate while challenging your muscles. But Aspen Ascent is specifically designed for those who want to enhance their snow sport skills.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The class is divided into three sections: speed and agility, strength and balance, and core and flexibility. A short warmup period at the beginning includes light cardio, such as jumping jacks (my instructor had us do a set of always-exhausting &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.fitsugar.com/Equipment-Necessary-Mountain-Climbers-733062&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot;&gt;mountain climbers&lt;/a&gt; afterward as well). Each of the three sections last between 10 to about 20 minutes, depending on the length of the class, which varies by location. After the core and flexibility section, which focuses on abs and yoga- and Pilates-inspired moves, there are a few minutes of cooldown to stretch your muscles.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Lunges and squats play an important role in Aspen Ascent, as do unstable surfaces to improve balance and upper body work, so many exercises mix a pair of weights with gliding discs. In my class we did two &quot;runs&quot; of every exercise - a short set for 30 seconds with a short break, followed by a minute of the same exercise and a longer break. &lt;/p&gt;
