Healthy BBQ: Not So Healthy Whole Wheat Buns

It's that time of year again to bust out the grill. Since hamburgers and hot dogs are a staple at most backyard BBQs, there's something you should know. The whole wheat buns you're buying may not be so healthy. Gasp! They might say "made with whole wheat," or they look brown but that doesn't mean they don't contain enriched flour and corn syrup of the high fructose variety. Check out the surprising ingredients in these popular buns and rolls:

Pepperidge Farms 100% Whole Wheat Hamburger Buns: High fructose corn syrup

Arnold Select Multi Grain Kaiser Rolls: High fructose corn syrup and enriched wheat flour

Barowsky's Wheat Bulky Rolls: Enriched flour

Country Kitchen Whole Grain Wheat Hot Dog Rolls: High fructose corn syrup

Fit's Tip: Remember to read the label to make sure your buns and rolls are made with whole wheat flour or another whole grain flour, and aren't sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. At a BBQ, you don't want to eat your corn as a sweetener, but as grilled corn on the cob. Am I right?

Healthy BBQ - Whole Grain Buns

I've talked a lot about healthier options to throw on the grill like Gardenburgers, Wildwood burgers, Tofu Pups, grilled corn and grilled veggies.

Now don't forget about those buns! You've got to do some detective work and read labels because many buns are made with the dreaded enriched flour, which means the healthy nutrients were stripped away.

Watch out for high fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated soybean oil and other cr*p you may find in your buns too. Don't be fooled by a pretty bun or a healthy name (like Arnold Select). Read the ingredients just to be sure.

Look for buns made with whole grains or whole wheat. These will taste better and be healthier for you since they contain some fiber!!!

Fit's Tips: If you can't find whole grain buns, go for some whole grain or whole wheat bread instead.

Good Buns Are Hard to Find

If you're trying to make your barbecue a little healthier by grilling up salmon burgers instead of ones made out of beef, don't skimp on the buns. It is easy to be fooled by ones that look healthy, but still have enriched flour listed as the first ingredient. As you'll recall, enriched flour is made when good old healthy wheat flour is processed and stripped of all the nutrients, and then companies add a little back in. The word "enriched" sounds healthy, but this is not what you want to be eating.

Go on a bun mission to find ones made with whole wheat flour. But don't stop there - make sure your buns are free of corn syrup as well. If you're in a bun conundrum and can't find any made with healthy ingredients, pick up some regular bread and use slices of that as your bun.

			HEALTH GUIDE REFERENCE FROM A.D.A.M

Definition

Diarrhea is loose, watery, and frequent stool. Diarrhea is considered chronic (long-term) when you have had loose or frequent stools for more than 4 weeks.

Alternative Names

Stools - watery; Frequent bowel movements; Loose bowel movements

Considerations

Diarrhea in adults is usually mild and goes away quickly without complications. In infants and children (especially under age 3), diarrhea can cause dehydration fairly quickly.

Common Causes

The most common cause of diarrhea is viral gastroenteritis, a mild viral infection that goes away on its own within a few days. This condition is often called the stomach flu. Viral gastroenteritis often occurs in mini-epidemics in schools, neighborhoods, or families.

Food poisoning and traveler's diarrhea are two other common causes of diarrhea. They occur as a result of eating food or drinking water contaminated with bacteria or parasites.

Medications, especially antibiotics, laxatives containing magnesium, and chemotherapy for cancer treatment, can also cause diarrhea.

The following medical conditions can also lead to diarrhea:

Malabsorption syndromes such as lactose intolerance

Inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis)

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Celiac disease

Other less common causes of diarrhea include:

Zollinger-Ellison syndrome

Nerve disorders like autonomic neuropathy or diabetic neuropathy

Carcinoid syndrome

Gastrectomy (partial removal of the stomach)

High dose radiation therapy

Home Care

Drink plenty of fluid to avoid becoming dehydrated. Start with sips of any fluid other than caffeinated beverages. Milk may prolong loose stools, but also provides needed fluids and nourishment. Drinking milk may be fine for mild diarrhea. For moderate and severe diarrhea, electrolyte solutions available in drugstores are usually best.

Active cultures of beneficial bacteria (probiotics) make diarrhea less severe and shorten its duration. Probiotics can be found in yogurt with active or live cultures and in supplements.

Foods like rice, dry toast, and bananas can sometimes help with diarrhea.

Avoid over-the-counter anti-diarrhea medications unless specifically instructed to use one by your doctor. Certain infections can be made worse by these drugs. When you have diarrhea, your body is trying to get rid of whatever food, virus, or other bug is causing it. The medicine interferes with this process.

Rest.

If you have a chronic form of diarrhea, like the one caused by irritable bowel syndrome, try adding bulk to your diet -- to thicken the stool and regulate bowel movements. Such foods include rice, bananas, and fiber from whole-wheat grains and bran. Psyllium-containing products such as Metamucil or similar products can also add bulk to stools.

Call your health care provider if

Call your doctor if:

You have blood or pus in your stools or your stool is black

You have abdominal pain that is not relieved by a bowel movement

You have symptoms of dehydration

You have a fever above 101°F, or your child has a fever above 100.4°F, along with diarrhea

You have foul smelling or oily-looking stools

You have recently traveled to a foreign country

You have eaten with other people who also have diarrhea

You have started on a new medication

Your diarrhea does not get better in 5 days (2 days for an infant or child), or worsens before that

Your child has been vomiting for more than 12 hours (in a newborn under 3 months you should call as soon as vomiting or diarrhea begins)

What to expect at your health care provider's office

Your doctor will take a complete medical history and do a physical examination, paying careful attention to your abdomen.

Questions that the doctor may ask include:

When did your diarrhea start?

How long have you had diarrhea?

What is the color and consistency of your stool?

Do you have blood in your stool?

Are you passing large amounts of mucus with your stool?

What other symptoms do you have?

Do you have abdominal pain or severe cramping with the diarrhea?

Do you have fever or chills?

Are any other family members sick?

Have you recently traveled out of the country?

What makes your pain worse? Stress? Specific foods?

Have you had abdominal surgery?

What medications do you take? Any recent changes to your medications?

Do you drink coffee? How much?

Do you drink alcohol? How much? How often?

Do you smoke? How much each day?

Are you on a special diet?

Your doctor will ask you to obtain one or more stool samples in special containers to test for signs of inflammation and infection and to identify the organism causing infection.

If there are signs of dehydration in addition to the diarrhea, your doctor may order:

Chem-20 (to check electrolytes)

Urine specific gravity

BUN and creatinine

Prevention

Wash your hands often, especially after going to the bathroom and before eating.

Teach children to not put objects in their mouth.

When taking antibiotics, try eating food with Lactobacillus acidophilus, a healthy bacteria. This helps replenish the good bacteria that antibiotics can kill. Yogurt with active or live cultures is a good source of this good bacteria.

Use alcohol-based hand gel frequently.

When traveling to underdeveloped areas, follow the steps below to avoid diarrhea:

Drink only bottled water and DO NOT use ice.

DO NOT eat uncooked vegetables or fruit that do not have peels.

DO NOT eat raw shellfish or undercooked meat.

DO NOT consume dairy products.

Healthy BBQ - Round Up

No doubt you are barbecuing today. It's our nation's favorite pastime for the 4th of July. I thought it would be good to review all the healthy options I have written about recently. Just giving you a gentle reminder that you can eat healthfully at a BBQ.

There are many meatless options out there. I recommend Wildwood tofu burgers, Gardenburgers and tofu pups.

Of course I recommend using whole wheat or whole grain buns for your burgers and dogs.

Don't forget to grill your veggies. I not only love corn on the grill; I am also a big fan of grilled radicchio.

Remember to marinate your meat before putting it on the barbie, and here are some tips from the Harvard Health Letter.

Here's a breakdown of popular BBQ condiments, and of course I have some tips on how to cut calories when dining BBQ style.

Don't forget to check out PartySugar's post on fun facts about Independence Day. You can impress all your friends with grilling techniques and your knowledge. Have FUN!!!
