We've all gotten the spam messages in our inbox about pills promising immediate weight loss, without the help of diet and exercise. Sure, it may seem tempting, but new research has found that weight-loss supplements widely available for purchase online often include ingredients that are potentially hazardous to your heart.
I am not a fan of weight-loss supplements — I believe that the benefits of exercise and eating healthy far outweigh losing a few quick pounds.

While I am a true believer in some herbal supplements, like Valerian root as a sleep aid, there are some herbal supplements that just seem fishy to me. Then again, the whole weight loss through a pill method of dieting doesn't really sit well with me either. A few people have asked me recently about bitter orange herbal supplements for weight loss.

Lately I have noticed that I cannot catch up on my TV shows without having to fast forward through a massive amount of diet pill and nutritional supplement commercials. I would not mind so much if they were not so obviously misleading, disturbingly false and oddly creepy.
Just the other day I saw something for Zetcap ($67/bottle) which not only calls itself the "first gastric bypass in a bottle" but also promotes its four minute workout video.

There is no shortage of crash diets and diet pills when it comes to losing weight fast and easy. Companies are even pushing natural supplements that they claim will help melt away pounds, like this one called Glucomannan. It's a water-soluble dietary fiber made from the corm (underground stem) of the Asian plant known as konjac.

Growing evidence suggests that vitamins and micronutrients, especially from foods, may play important roles in the prevention or treatment of certain cancers:
- One study found that the risk of prostate cancer risk dropped as consumption of vegetables high in vitamin C, such as broccoli and bell peppers, rose.
- A diet high in cruciferous vegetables has been found to reduce the risk of kidney cancer; low consumption of cruciferous vegetables increases the risk.
On the other hand, high amounts of folic acid (a B vitamin) may be associated with colorectal cancer, and beta-carotene supplements are associated with increased lung cancer risk in smokers and people exposed to asbestos.
Macular Degeneration
In 2007, the National Eye Institute recommended that people with intermediate or advanced macular degeneration in one eye take a vitamin formula shown to reduce the risk of macular degeneration in the other eye by 25%. The formula contains vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, and zinc.
