Julia Roberts Doesn't Just Swim in the Pool

Swimming laps is one of my favorite cardio workouts since it gets your heart rate up, burns calories (236 per 30 minutes), and strengthens your muscles. It puts less pressure on your joints too, so it's a great alternative to running or biking.

Laps aren't the only thing you can use a pool for, though. According to InStyle, actress Julia Roberts got in shape for her new movie Duplicity by using the pool in different ways. Her trainer Kathy Kaehler had Julia doing a mix of running, cross-country ski movements, and arm exercises while in deep water. Kathy says, "Swimming and water exercises are great ways to build up endurance and stay fit."

So after warming up with a few laps, put on a flotation belt such as the Aqua Jogger ($51) or a Hydro-Tone Belt ($50). Do intervals, alternating between running moderately for one minute, and sprinting for one minute. Then do other types of movements in the water that mimic riding a bicycle, cross-country skiing, jumping rope, or jumping jacks. The water adds resistance to your body, so regular movements will challenge your muscles more effectively.

Source

Jennifer Aniston: What SUP?

Lately a big trend among water sports enthusiasts, and our favorite celebrities, is stand up paddle surfing (SUP). So much so that even the lovely (and smart) Jennifer Aniston has taken to the sport.

Maybe it's because it's fun, but I'm sure she also likes it because SUP is a phenomenal workout. SUP is basically where you stand on a surf board (or kayak) and paddle. If requires a good deal of balance, but it's not about catching waves. SUP can be done on totally flat water and since you are standing up, you are able to get a much better view of what is going on in and out of the water. Being that it is all about balance, SUP basically works every muscle in your body. Not only are you working your legs, but you're also working your arms and core. You'll be improving your fast-twitch muscles (crucial for balance and reaction time), which makes SUP a great cross-training workout since almost all sports/exercises rely on balance and core strength. Plus since you'll probably be falling off a bunch in the beginning, you'll be getting a good workout pulling yourself back onto the board. SUP fans regularly claim that just thirty minutes will work your body much harder than several hours of surfing.

To see more pics of Jennifer (and her super toned body) in Hawaii, just read more
5 Things About Working Out in Water

This summer you may be looking to hit the water for a workout (or two) because it is a lot cooler than sweating it out on the asphalt during a run. In case you needed more reasons to get a water workout in, here are five great things about working out in the water:

It is low-impact.

Works muscles that are not typically used in you normal gym routine.

The pressure of water on the body (aka hydrostatic pressure) improves blood circulation.

Your pretty much covered up by the water, so no worrying about how your body looks while working out.

Next-day muscle soreness should be nonexistent or minimal.

Fit's Tips: By water workout I mean swimming, water aerobics, etc.

Source

Beach Body Beach Workout

So you've been hitting the gym a lot to get into that bikini and now that you've arrived, try and keep it that way with this beach body beach workout:

Warm-Up: Tread water for 5 minutes.

Cardio: Jog in the sand for at least 30 minutes. For an added challenge, run in ankle high water.

Walking Lunges: Walking lunges are a great variation to regular lunges. Plus doing them in the sand adds a whole new variation. Try doing 20 forward and 20 backward. For an added challenge, hold two water bottles down at your sides.

Mountain Climbers: Do 3 one minute intervals. (Hands in sand with shoulders over hands. One leg tucked, one leg extended. As quickly as possible "climb" alternating legs back and forth.) Word to the wise: You may want to close your eyes as you'll probably be kicking up a lot of sand.

Push-Ups: Do 3 sets of 10 push-ups on the sand. For an added challenge, make sure your head is at a slightly lower level than your feet.

Crab Walk: (Reverse push-up position: belly facing up, abs tight, legs out in front of you, arms extended below your shoulders, spine straight) Walk forward for 25 steps and then backward 25 steps. Repeat. For an added challenge, soak a towel and rest it on your belly for some added weight.

Crunches: Do 2 sets of 25 basic crunches in the sand -- For an added challenge position yourself so that your head is at a slightly lower level than your feet.

Cool-Down: Walk around in the sand for 5 minutes and follow with 15 high kicks.

Fit's Tip: Be sure to use a waterproof/sweatproof sunscreen and I prefer to wear sneakers (except when swimming) for support of my ankles despite the sand.

Burn Calories without Burning Up in the Heat

Things are heating up weather wise, but if you still want to keep your workout outside (say while doing my beach body beach workout) use these tips from the American Council on Exercise on burning calories without burning up in the heat:

Hydration: Fluid replenishment before, during and after exercise is essential to avoid progressive dehydration. Always consume more fluids than you think you need before and after exercise, and strive to drink six to eight ounces of fluid every 15 to 20 minutes during exercise.

Exercise Intensity: You should probably reduce the intensity of your workout, particularly the first few times you are exposed to higher temperatures.

Temperature: Use the heat stress index table (at the right) to determine the risk of exercising at various combinations of temperature and humidity. While a 90° F outdoor temp is relatively safe at 10 percent humidity, the heat stress of 90° F at 50 percent humidity is the equivalent of 96° F. When the heat stress index rises above 90° F, you may want to consider postponing your exercise session until later in the day. Or, plan ahead, and beat the day's heat by working out early in the morning.

There's more so read more

Fitness: Physical training and heat acclimation can increase your blood volume, helping to regulate body temperature more effectively. Interestingly, the acclimatization process can be completed in 7 to 14 days of repeated heat exposure. However, you must always continue to drink fluids before, during and after exercise.

Clothing: Wear minimal clothing to provide greater skin surface area for heat dissipation. Your clothing should be lightweight, loose fitting, light colored to reflect the sun's rays, and of a material that absorbs water, such as cotton.

Rest: Know when to say 'no' to exercise. Using common sense is your best bet for preventing heat stress when Mother Nature turns up the heat.

Fit's Tip: Another idea is to wear clothing that wicks the sweat away from your body and can help prevent against sweat rash and blisters.

Tips For Cleaning the Yard Without Breaking Your Back

The cool temps of Fall mean yard work for me. How about you? There are piles of fallen leaves to rake, and I also like to plant colorful flowers to brighten up the upcoming rainy Winter.

I'm sure many of you are knee-deep in yard work as well, and while it's a great way to burn some calories, you want to do it safely so you don't end up injuring your bod. Here are some tips.

Purchase a lightweight rake made out of plastic instead of metal. The plastic glides more easily on the grass compared to the metal, making less effort needed on your part.

When raking, keep your core stable and upright, and use your arms to pull the leaves toward you instead of hunching over. It'll tone your upper body and prevent pain in your back and neck.

If you have woods on your property, rake leaves into small piles that you carry away on a tarp. Don't try to pull too much at once, as that's a good way to strain a muscle. If you have to bag your leaves, bend your knees out to the sides and squat down to pick up piles instead of bending at your waist. This will work your booty and also prevent lower back pain.

If you have heavy things like tree stumps and rocks to clear off your lawn, use a wheelbarrow instead of carrying them yourself.

Bring a bottle of water outside and drink often. Even though you may not be at your gym, it's still a good workout.

Take breaks often. No need to do all three hours of lawn work at once. Do 20 minutes and then stretch for five. Also know when to call it a day. You can always do more yard work tomorrow.

How Mo' Nique Lost the Weight and Why Some Don't Like It

Everywhere I look lately I'm seeing comedienne Mo'Nique. She's got a new late-night talk show on BET, is making the talk show rounds, and is creating some serious Oscar buzz for her standout performance as an abusive mother in Precious. Oh, and also, she's about 50 lbs. lighter.

The stand-up comic has spent a career embracing her big girl status, often telling fans: bigger is better. But on a recent appearance on the Oprah show Mo'Nique shared that slimming down was a matter of life and death.

In 2006, at 262 lbs, she was diagnosed with high blood pressure and doctors warned that she was on a fast track to a short life. In late 2007, Mo'Nique made the decision to lose the weight. A decision, she says, that has alienated some of her fans who looked to her as a symbol that being big is OK. She still thinks that being big is beautiful, but says that being healthy and alive is even better.

To hear how Mo'Nique lost the weight, read more.

Mo'Nique shared with People that her plan is to lose a total of 65 lbs. and is about 20 lbs. away from reaching her goal. The main focus was to change her eating habits - she's cut out junk food like cake, cookies, and chips, and instead of red meat and fried foods, she eats fresh fish and drinks a gallon of water each day. She also hired trainer Erica Sammy to whip her into shape. They hit the gym together on weekday mornings doing a combination workout of cardio, stretching, and weight training.

Food Review: Code Blue Recovery Drink

I must admit I'm not big on special fitness drinks, especially recovery drinks. They're often full of extra calories, and I usually opt for water since most exercise physiologists believe you don't need to worry about replacing electrolytes, carbs, and protein unless you have been working out and sweating for more than an hour. I often think a lot of these drinks have added coloring and chemicals, so when I saw Code Blue marketed as an all natural post-workout drink I was curious to try it. I must admit, I liked its tropical flavor, and although it only has 40 calories per eight-ounce serving (the can contains 12 ounces, equal to one and a half servings) Code Blue does not have that artificial sweetener taste of many low-cal beverages.

To see how this drink is sweetened and if it is an unnatural color, just read more.

Looking at the ingredient list on the back of the Code Blue can, I can't say I felt like I was drinking something "natural." After water, the next three ingredients are: crystalline fructose, agave nectar, and malic acid, which adds tartness more than sweetness. Further down the list I found stevia leaf extract listed as well, which is a bit more natural. Code Blue contains the electrolytes potassium and sodium, but also contains the supplement milk thistle to help detox the liver (trainer Bob Harper believes in the treatment), and prickly pear extract to reduce inflammation.

The first time I tried Code Blue, I drank it straight from the can. You can imagine my surprise when I poured it into a glass and found the liquid to be a vibrant unnatural blue. Which prompts the question, what natural ingredient was used to color this drink and why even bother coloring it?

Ingredients: Filtered Purified Water, Crystalline Fructose, Agave Nectar, Malic Acid, Sodium Phosphate, Potassium Citrate, Citric Acid, Natural Flavor, D-Ribose, Fruit Juice (for color), Sustamine™ (L-Alanine L-Glutamine), Pectin, Inositol, Ascorbic Acid, Prickly Pear Extract (Opunitia ficus-indica), Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum) Extract, N-Acetyl Cysteine, Stevia (Stevia Rebaudiana) Leaf Extractives, Soy Protein and Rice Flour, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Niacinamide (Vitamin B3), DL-alpha-Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Selenium Complexed with Amino Acids and Polypeptides, Cyanocobalamin (Vitamin B12)

I'm not really sold on the drink, but I'm not completely opposed to it either. I would certainly drink this over other recovery drinks, but more likely I will sip some water instead. Have you tried it?

This just in: The color comes from blueberries.

Is Pickle Juice the New Sport Drink?

I feel bad throwing out pickle brine, but I never know what to do with it when I eat the last pickle. My friend saves the juice for her Bloody Mary mix but I'm not a big fan of the brunchy cocktail. But apparently pickle brine has another use - as a sports drink!

You lose electrolytes whenever you have an intense workout or sweat intensely. Even though it sounds weird that pickle juice makes a good electrolyte replacement, it totally makes sense when you consider how much salt is in the juice. Sodium is an essential component in helping the body retain fluids, which is extremely important for long workouts, marathons, or any other endurance activity. Not having enough fluids in your muscles can result in some serious cramping and dehydration.

It's definitely an acquired taste, but if you feel like you want a natural alternative to Gatorade, try adding some pickle juice to water, or make some pickle juice popsicles. I might give it a shot the next time I'm out on a major bike ride or an all-day climb in hot weather.
