Angie Unhappy with "Thin" Accusations, Blames Breastfeeding

We were all happy to hear that Katherine Heigl rejects Hollywood's pressure to be thin. Now Angelina Jolie is speaking about being thin in Hollywood as well, but as a mother.

Aside from dealing with the painful loss of her mom, Angelina attributes some of her weight loss to being a mom dealing with breastfeeding.

Jolie sparked concern among fans earlier this year when her already thin frame grew even smaller and the veins on her arms started protruding. But she insists that vanity is not to blame for her shrinking figure.

"I have four kids and I finished breastfeeding – it's been hard to get my nutrition back on track. Instead of people saying I look like a person dealing with something emotionally, they assume it's because I want to fit into skinny jeans." She added, "Someone saying to me that I'm thin is not a compliment.”

Complex carbohydrates are among the best foods you can eat while breastfeeding. "If you look at the Weight Watcher's diet for lactation, it's all about complex carb loading. It's one of the most successful long-term lactation weight loss programs for women. It helps them lose weight without sacrificing milk production," says Linda M. Hanna, IBCLC, program coordinator for Lactation and Prenatal Education Services at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
In addition, Hanna says it's also important to get enough protein and fat in your diet. Aim for at least three to five servings (1 ounce each) of fat a day. These could be vegetable oils, butter, or even mayonnaise. This, she says, will help your body to make a good supply of the super-fatty and satisfying "hind" milk that is expressed during the later half of each feeding, Hanna says.
"In the end we are talking about eating a balanced diet, with complex carbohydrates, protein, and fats, and with as little sugar and sugary snacks as possible," says Hanna.
Among the most important nutrients you need while breastfeeding is calcium -- a minimum of 1,000 mg daily is a must. While dairy foods are a great source, you don't have to drink milk to make milk. To meet your calcium needs, the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests five daily servings of any calcium-rich food, including low-fat yogurt and cheese, as well as nondairy foods such as salmon, broccoli, sesame seeds, tofu, and kale.

Here are a few tips for surviving with your friendship and sanity intact.

Be realistic. Many a bridesmaid has agreed to stand up in a friend's wedding only to regret it when she's tottering around in the required three-inch heels and unflattering silk dupioni dress when she's super pregnant or still hanging on to 15 pounds of baby weight. While you don't want to disappoint your friend, really think about whether you'll be able to live up to her expectations if you are nearing your due date or will be dealing with a newborn. It's better to bow out gracefully than to feel miserable or torn in two directions (i.e. hair and makeup or a breastfeeding session) on her big day.
Speak up about the dress early. Ask your friend if you can try on bridesmaid dresses with her; otherwise, you can't complain when she picks out a bright orange pencil dress for you to wear six weeks postpartum. Women who haven't gone through a pregnancy often don't realize how uncomfortable pregnant women and new moms can be within their own bodies. Breast milk. It's a great source of nourishment for your growing baby, a comfort snack for some toddlers, like my 16-month-old who doesn't seem to want to stop (that's a whole-nother post). And breastfeeding in general is beneficial in many different ways. But did you know breast milk has more than a dozen other uses?

Why yes, some sources will tell you breast milk has a variety of uses.

When you cut your foot or burn your finger, do you grab the Neosporin, or use a bit of your own liquid gold to do some healing? If your answer is western medicine, you may be selling yourself short.

When I returned to work after maternity leave I had a stash of 220oz of milk in my freezer and I didn't want to waste a drop of it on anything else.

I'm not going to lie, ok? Some of the things I've read people using their milk for creep me out just a little bit. Here are seven things I don't plan on using my breast milk for.

A weapon: I've read stories of women who squirt their milk across the room at their husband, their dog, or whoever is getting on their nerves at the time. While I'm sure at some point in my lactation abilities I may have been able to accomplish this, I can proudly say I have never tried.
Acne: Ever heard of Proactive? … Or maybe this is the secret ingredient. Sorry, I don't wash my face with liquid gold, or my bodily fluids for that matter.
Scratches, scrapes, and cuts: Bandaids people! And something that works… Like Neosporin.
Ashy legs/ dry skin: I'll admit, I've been in a bind several times where I look down and my legs are pale white from dryness. But it would take far too much milk, and be far too awkward to pump my milk like a lotion bottle.
My milkshakes: This gives Kelis' Milkshake song (think "My milkshake brings the boys to the yard…") a whole new meaning. No thanks.
Contact solution or eye redness: I know people who have used breast milk for pink eye. I've even had friends tell me it works like a charm. But the thought of putting milk in my eyes seems weird and wrong. Coming from a human or not. And if you're in a bind for contact solution please don't look for the nearest lactating mom. You can make your own by mixing salt with distilled water.
Sexual lubricant: This is quite possibly the most disturbing suggestion I read on that list. I would love to know who actually has tried this sexy idea.
