Oikos Greek Style Yogurt from Stonyfield Farm

I love yogurt and I really love Greek style yogurt, since it is already strained so it is extra thick and creamy. I was stoked to hear that Stonyfield Farm is now making a Greek style yogurt. I was even more stoked when I tasted it. It is great!!!

Stonyfield Farm has partnered with a master yogurt maker from Greece, Mustafa Dogan to make their new Oikos Greek style yogurt. Let me tell you Mustafa knows his stuff. And, because the yogurt is made by Stonyfield Farm it is organic. Good for you and the planet.

Oikos yogurt is packed with protein - 16 grams per 6 oz. serving - and is naturally lower in carbs and sugars than regular yogurts. The yogurt contains 5 live and active cultures so it is chock full of good bacteria. If plain yogurt is not for you Oikos also makes a vanilla flavored yogurt, which contains a bit more sugar and calories as well. Personally I love eating the plain with fresh fruit and it great for making Tzatziki and dips.

Nutritionally it is quite similar to Fage Total Greek style yogurt, the big difference is that it is made in the U.S. and is organic. Look for it in your local natural food store or in the natural food sections of select grocery stores nationwide. A 6 oz. single serving cup is priced just under $2.00.

You could be contributing to that number more than you know if you use disposable razors and toothbrushes, unless you use Recycline's Preserve line of personal products. Recycline, a company whose mission is to provide high-quality recycled content and recyclable products to the consumer, is single handedly trying to reduce the amount of plastic disposed into landfills. What's more? Recycline has partnered up with Stonyfield Farm, who has offered to recycle any yogurt cups that are returned to the company by consumers. Recycline is, in part, using these cups to manufacture the handles of new Preserve Toothbrushes, Preserve Jr Toothbrushes, Preserve Tongue Cleaners and Preserve Razors.

To read more about the company and their fab products, check out the Recycline site.
Frozen Yogurt That's Actually GOOD

Some people are born ice cream lovers. They crave that sweet and creamy cold treat over chocolate any day.

Too bad ice cream is loaded with fat and cholesterol, and the light versions just don't taste the same.

I discovered that Stonyfield Farm, the makers of my favorite yogurt, make a frozen yogurt that actually tastes delicious - no joke.

They've got yummy flavors like Creme Caramel, Raspberry White Chocolate Chunk, Gotta Have Vanilla, Javalanche, and Vanilla Fudge Swirl.

It doesn't have that weird tangy taste so many other frozen yogurts have. It's light and creamy and could almost pass for the real deal.

One serving has 130 calories, 1.5g of fat, and less than 5 mg of cholesterol. Where ice cream has 250 cals, 14g of fat, and 55mg of cholesterol. Did you get it that the frozen yogurt has 50 mg less of cholesterol - that is amazing!!!!

If you are an ice cream lover, and crave that sweet stuff but want to ditch the fat and cholesterol, give it a try. Don't get me wrong - there's NO substitute for real ice cream, but it does taste pretty darn close.

Easy Way to Get Your Daily Calcium

I was in the grocery store yesterday, picking up a few staples: eggs, OJ, broccoli, bananas, and yogurt.

Like clockwork, I went to reach for my usual Stonyfield Farms yogurt, but I stopped when I saw something different.

At first I thought it was a new label, but it was actually a new kind of non-fat yogurt called 2-a-Day.

It says on the container, "Getting enough calcium has never been so tasty. Just two of these nonfat yogurts meet your daily calcium needs to help you build and maintain strong bones. And the added inulin and Vitamin D help you absorb more calcium with every delicious bite. "Bone" appetit!"

Cute, huh? But it's really a great idea, so I bought one to see if it tastes any different. It was pretty much the same, if you're used to eating non-fat yogurt.

And it only has 120 calories per container. If losing weight is one of your goals, studies show that a reduced-calorie diet that's high in dairy calcium may help promote weight loss. It's a great and tasty healthy snack that's definitely worth giving a try.

Food Fight: Fiber, Iron, and Protein

While shopping for yogurt the other day, I saw a woman stocking up on regular yogurt. I couldn't help but casually ask, "Have you ever tried Greek yogurt?" I know it contains so much more protein than the cups she was choosing, and it got me thinking about other foods that may seem alike, but nutritionally, they can be incredibly different. Here are a few seemingly similar foods that have surprisingly different nutritional values. Hopefully this list will help you make healthier decisions the next time you hit the grocery store.

Fruit with the most fiber: While cruising down the produce aisle, pick up some cherries instead of grapes. Twenty grapes contain about .8 grams of fiber, but the same amount of cherries offers 3.4 grams!

Whole grain with the most protein: Long grain brown rice is known for being healthy. A one-cup serving contains 5 grams of protein. Not bad, but pick up some quinoa instead, since one cup has 8.9 grams. It's a protein superstar.

Fresh greens with the most iron: When choosing greens for your salad, I've always loved red leaf lettuce. One cup contains .3 mg of iron, but if you choose spinach instead, you'll get more iron - .8 mg per cup. Every little bit counts.

Ways to Include Less Dairy in Your Diet

Eating too much dairy can cause a number of issues for people such as tummy troubles, congestion, and acne, so if you're trying to cut back on the amount of dairy in your diet, here are some ways to do it.

Skip the cheese on your burger. Eating a hamburger not only avoids dairy, but it also saves you about 100 calories.

Pour almond milk in your cereal. It's deliciously creamy, lactose-free, and contains the same amount of calories per serving as skim milk.

If you love yogurt with fruit and granola for breakfast, opt for soy yogurt. O'Soy and WholeSoy are slightly higher in calories than regular yogurt, but offer six or seven grams of protein, just like Stonyfield Farms' Nonfat Vanilla.

Guilt-Free Frozen Treats

We are excited to share one of our fave stories from Prevention here on FitSugar!

Sorbets, ice cream sandwiches, and other healthy frozen desserts
By Molly Raisch, Prevention

Ice cream is the perfect remedy to steamy, hot weather, but sometimes the calorie counts on the carton are downright scary. That's why we found frozen desserts that don't melt under scrutiny. These healthy treats get our vote (with a cherry on top!).

Nondairy
So Delicious Dairy Free Vanilla Frozen Dessert (½ cup)
Nutrition: 130 cal; 1 g pro; 13 g sugar; 3 g fiber; 3 g fat
Like: This soy treat tastes just like the real deal, making it perfect for people who have lactose intolerance.
Healthy takeaway: Some dairy-free varieties — based on soy, coconut, and rice milk — can be high in fat and sugar.

10 Delicious Ways to Use an Ice Cream Cone

Reduced Calorie

Breyers French Chocolate Fat Free (½ cup)
Nutrition: 90 cal; 3 g pro; 13 g sugar; 4 g fiber; 0 g fat
Like: Our pick has less fat than many premium frozen desserts and also boasts fiber, which gives it more texture.
Healthy takeaway: Be cautious about fudge ribbons, which are mostly corn syrup with a dab of artificial dye.

Guilt-Free Ice Cream Cake Recipe You'll Love!

Frozen Yogurt
Stonyfield Farm Organic Nonfat Frozen Yogurt (½ cup)
Nutrition: 100 cal; 4 g pro; 18 g sugar; 1 g fiber; 0 g fat
Like: This carton is packed with the good-for-your-gut bacteria that we love in yogurt.
Healthy takeaway: Other fro-yos lure you in by touting their "live and active cultures," but the actual yogurt portion can be minuscule.

Three more choices when you keep reading!

How Much That Protein Is Going to Cost You

In a recent post, I mentioned that I always choose Greek yogurt over regular since the protein amount in the Greek variety is almost tripled. Yes, Greek yogurt is a little pricier, but I feel like I am getting more protein bang for my buck. This yogurt comparison inspired me to investigate other forms of protein and how their prices compare. I collated my findings in this handy chart, basing the food amount on how much you would need to reach five grams of protein. The prices come from my grocery bill; I live in Vermont, so prices may vary in your neck of the woods.

Are You Eating Too Much Cholesterol?

I wasn't even eating cholesterol! The thing is, your liver makes cholesterol and it's actually essential for your body to function normally. Cholesterol is also found in food and appropriately called dietary cholesterol. Since your body produces enough, you don't need to worry about getting any from diet. What you do need to worry about is getting too much.

A healthy person with healthy cholesterol levels can safely consume 300 milligrams a day. If your levels are high, aim for less than 200 mg a day. Are you eating too much? Find out how much cholesterol is in your favorite foods when you

High cholesterol levels in the blood can put you at risk for heart disease. So answer these two questions for me: have you had your cholesterol levels tested, and are you getting too much?
