Healthy Cooking Tip: Slow Cooker and Steaming

To me, falling temperatures at sunset mean cooked veggies for dinner. Raw carrots just don't cut it when it is sweater weather inside my house. But don't just boil your vegetables, because how you prepare your produce affects its nutritional quality. Two simple methods help preserve vital nutrients: steaming and slow cooking.

Steaming helps veggies retain nutrients better than other methods, especially when compared to boiling. The vitamins and minerals are leached out into the hot water when you throw your veggies into boiling water, but steaming preserves more of the nutrients. The slow cooker is not only convenient, but cooking foods at lower temperatures may help preserve nutrients that can be lost when food is cooked rapidly at high heat, like grilling. Plus it is great to load the slow cooker with a bunch of veggies and lean protein.

This reminds me, I need to find some new recipes for my slow cooker. Got any you want to share?

Cool Healthy Gadget: Ziploc Zip'n Steam Bags

I am always looking for new ways to cook healthfully and so when a new product comes along to make it that much easier, I love to share it with you guys.

I've been hearing a lot about these new Ziploc Zip'n Steam Bags and while I have not yet been able to get my hands on them, I am liking the idea especially since it puts your microwave to use in a healthy way. Here is how it works: Each bag has patented vents that allow food to be steamed under pressure so that it is cooked thoroughly and evenly for healthy meals in minutes. You can steam anything from fresh veggies to fish, just throw on some seasoning and pop the bag full of goodies in the microwave. No need for oils or fats - healthy cooking doesn't really get any easier than that.

I do believe that getting a reusable steamer would be much better for the long run and for the environment, but if you have yet to purchase one, these are a good way to meet your steaming needs temporarily. If anyone has tried them, let me know what you think. If not, you should be able to find them at supermarkets nationwide.

In Season: Carrots

You eat carrots regularly - but how much do you know about them? Although they can be grown year-round, all root vegetables thrive during the Winter season, protected from cooler temperatures by the earth. Carrots are known for their vibrant orange color, but there are also purple, red, yellow, and white varieties - mostly grown as novelty crops. The root itself is crunchy and sweet, while the leafy greens tend to be on the bitter side.

The Essential Habits of a Healthy Home Cook

Unless you know what you're doing, cooking at home can be as detrimental to your health as eating out. As far as your body is concerned, cooking with processed ingredients high in saturated fat, sugar, and sodium might as well be like eating McDonald's. But becoming a healthy cook isn't as hard as you think. Here are some essential habits for healthy home cooks, starting from the moment you set foot in the grocery store to the second you put dinner on the table.

Shop the Right Way
Healthy cooking starts with strategic grocery shopping. Create a meal plan for the week and stock your cart with whole, fresh, and organic foods, lean proteins, and unrefined grains: an easy way to do this is to shop the perimeter of the grocery store. When you do have to buy prepared foods, choose products with the fewest and simplest ingredients. Healthy grocery options can be expensive, but here are six ways to save money when shopping organic.

Fill Your Toolbox
If cooking from scratch seems daunting, arm yourself with a few healthy kitchen gadgets. From steamers to kitchen scales, these tools will help cut back on prep and cook time, reduce the amount of fat in your dishes, and even make calorie counting and portion control easier. Here are a few of our favorite healthy cooking gadgets.

Veggies make tasty and satisfying bites as well. Need some new ideas? Besides the old carrots with hummus standby, here are some delicious veggie-inspired snacks, all for around or under 150 calories.
Feeling sluggish after the busy holiday season? You're not alone. According to a recent study in The New England Journal of Medicine, the average American gains a pound between November and January.

But rather than wallow in the aftermath of too many cocktails and Christmas cookies, we turned to fitness expert Angela Parker, who offered these easy tips to banish postholiday bloating fast:

Sweat your ass off! Give yourself a daily 60-minute sweat session three days in a row.
Tips and Tricks For Avoiding Weekend Weight Gain

When Friday rolls around, my weekend begins. I often celebrate by having friends come over for dinner or meeting them for a bite to eat. It's a great way to unwind from the busy week, but constantly letting loose on the weekends also means you might need to buy looser pants! Here are some tips for enjoying the weekend without derailing your diet.

Weigh yourself twice a week - either Friday and Monday a.m. or Thursday and Monday a.m. There's nothing better to keep you on track than knowing that you have to face the scale come Monday morning.

Eat healthy throughout the day if you know you'll be splurging at night. Focus on eating meals that are packed with fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean proteins. Then you can feel good about going overboard for dinner.

Don't starve yourself to save calories for later. It'll not only mess up your metabolism, but by dinner time, that famished feeling will likely cause you to eat more than you would if you weren't starving.

Have a healthy snack before heading to a big brunch or dinner. It'll take the edge off your hunger.

Know what you're going to order before you go out to eat. That way you're less tempted by the plethora of choices.

Limit the martinis and cosmos. Alcohol is a diet double-whammy; it’s not only rich in calories itself, but it also reduces inhibitions and increases appetite. So stick to the one-drink-a-day rule.

There are other great tips, so read more.

We are excited to share one of our fave stories from Shape here on FitSugar. This week Shape turns to Cynthia Sass, a registered dietitian with master's degrees in both nutrition science and public health.

According to the most recent nutrition surveys, the majority of Americans fall short when it comes to hitting the recommended marks for the three most important food groups: fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Picture this: if you add up all the fruit and veggie servings the average American should have had over a lifetime that they did not eat, they would fill an entire football field. That’s a lot of missing nutrients!

If you tend to fall short of the targets, which are two daily servings of fruit, and three each for veggies and whole grains, start by focusing on adding one extra serving in each category per day. If you’re consistent, just these three changes can snowball into huge health benefits over time.

A Reader Recipe: Asian Peanut Noodle Salad

We love healthy versions of our favorite takeout foods, and so does FitSugar reader For The Love of Fiber, who posted this recipe for Asian peanut noodle salad in our Healthy Recipe group.

Here’s a nice vegetarian entrée with a healthy dose of fiber and tons of antioxidant-rich veggies! Inspired by a recipe I found in Shape Magazine a few years back, it’s really tasty and makes great leftovers for lunch. If you’re on a budget, peanuts can be substituted for macadamia nuts – no one will think any less of you. And if your preference is meat, swap out the tofu for some chicken breast. Serve with steamed broccoli and you have yourself a taste of the Far East in the comfort of your own home, minus the MSG. And I made this with Mara's Pasta - quite possibly the best-tasting whole wheat pasta on the planet. It's brand new and doesn't taste like cardboard. Pretty awesome.

Use organic ingredients when possible, particularly if you’re going meat-free with the tofu. Look for a quality brand that is organic and GMO-free. It’s worth the extra money.

Foods That Prevent Weight Gain

We are pumped to share one of our fave stories from Self here on FitSugar!

Prefer your morning java to a steaming cup of tea? Here's a compelling reason to make the switch: a new study in the online journal Obesity suggests that green tea may help prevent weight gain. Other recent studies have also suggested that drinking a cup or two of green tea each day may help you manage your weight. But is sipping green tea really the best way to stave off pounds before you pack them on? We asked Willow Jarosh and Stephanie Clarke, SELF contributing editors and co-founders of C&J Nutrition, to weigh in.

Green tea and veggies that are very low in calories like celery, cabbage, lettuce, cucumbers, etc. are healthy to include in your diet because they contain antioxidants, water to keep you hydrated, and fiber, which can help you feel more full and potentially eat fewer overall calories," Jarosh and Clarke say.

Jarosh and Clarke are not convinced that most of us can drink enough green tea to mimic the weight-loss results found in some of the recent studies. But enjoying a cup or two each day may improve your health as part of a relaxing ritual, so it's worth a shot!

Looking for a few more ways to prevent weight gain before it happens?
