Then you can head for the Hollywood Hills and still keep your body red carpet ready.
Irish I Were Running!

Chicago is renowned for its St. Patty's Day celebrations from parades to dying the river green, and you know you're going to be wanting to participate.

Maybe you're making a special trip out there or maybe you live in Chicago, but before you start celebrating too hard, think about taking a jog around the city. One company Fleet Feet Sports has a Lincoln Square jog already prepared on the morning of March 17th at 8:00 AM. Join the group that starts at Lincoln Square Fleet Feet Location for a Saturday Morning run/jog/walk along the very green Chicago River. You can go any distance you wish from 3 to 6 miles, and all paces and abilities are welcome on the run. Visit FleetFeetChicago.com for more information on the run.

Now all that green beer with corned beef and cabbage won't seem nearly as unhealthy.

Sightseeing + Running = City Running Tours

I am all about multi-tasking and amazed at the new strategies folks create to combine fitness with other activities. When I first learned about running tours in Rome, I was so excited by the concept that I almost bought a ticket to Italy. Thanks to City Running Tours I can stay stateside and jog to see the sights of New York, Chicago and D.C., with Austin and Denver coming soon.

This concept is great for the business traveler bored with the hotel treadmill, the vacationer in training for an upcoming race, or the recreational runner who wants to explore the sights and exercise at the same time. City Running Tours offers set tours, as well as customized runs to accommodate any athletic ability, style, training regimen or specific landmarks. Pricing is $50 per person for the first 6 miles and $4 per person for each mile after that. In the Big Apple prices are a little higher - $60 per person for the first six miles and $6 per person for each additional mile.

Buy your tickets online and hit the streets, see new sights, and get your heart rate up all at the same time.

Celebrate Daylight Saving Time With a Morning Workout

It's that time of year again, where we "fall back," and turn our clocks back one hour. I love gaining an extra hour this one time of the year, so make the most of it. Don't just go through your day as usual, because you'll never even realize you received that extra 60 minutes.

Since most people complain that they don't have time to exercise, my advice is to get up in the morning when you normally do, and spend your freebie hour working out. It's a great habit to get into, especially if you love exercising outdoors. Mornings will be brighter, so it's safer to exercise before work, since it'll most likely be dark by the time you get home. Here are some ways to sweat it out for an hour:

Call a friend and go on a long, brisk walk. You'll burn 236 calories.

Pick up the pace and go on a relaxing run. An hour burns 473 calories.

Hit a mountain trail. An hour-long hike burns 355 calories.

Hop on your bike and tour a new spot in your neighborhood. After an hour, you'll have burned 473 calories.

Do a strength-training session and burn 177 calories after an hour.

Take a heart-pumping cardio class at your gym. You'll burn an astounding 414 calories.

Don't forget to change your clocks before you go to bed tonight. Daylight saving time officially ends at 2 a.m., Sunday, Nov. 1. Enjoy your hour!

Alanis Morissette Marathoning For Eating Disorders

Many celebs have laced up their sneaks and finished marathons, including Will Ferrell, Mario Lopez, Oprah, David Lee Roth, and Katie Holmes. Now you can add Alanis Morissette to that list. She's planning on running this Sunday, Oct. 11, in the Bizz Johnson Trail Marathon, in Lassen National Forest in northern California.

Alanis is running to raise money for the National Eating Disorders Association, since she knows firsthand what it feels like to struggle with anorexia and bulimia. Alanis began running about a year ago after seeing her assistant Leah running "like a gazelle" while on tour. This singer-songwriter feels that running this marathon is allowing her to use her body as an instrument and raise awareness about an important and personal issue. She knew she couldn't get through the many hours of grueling training unless there was a higher purpose and explains, "I wanted to offer this run to anyone who has had a fraught relationship with their food, their body and their heart and soul."

To find out if training triggered unhealthy eating disorder behaviors, read more.

Alanis said that marathon training did trigger some eating disorder type behaviors, but she knew there was no way she could undereat and maintain the high level of energy needed in order to run. So training for this marathon actually helped her find balance in how she fueled herself. This amazing singer was also aware of not exercising obsessively. She has an order of priorities now: Sleep first. Food second. Run third. Alanis said, "I don't have the first two nailed, I can't run. So it incentivized me to nurture the first two. When I run healthfully I feel empowered and kind. When I run obsessively I feel nervous, stressed out and disassociated."

Have any of you ever walked, biked, or run for a cause? Tell me about it in the comment section below.

Madonna Calls It Quits With Trainer Tracy Anderson

These days Madonna has been making big proclamations, but recent changes for the material girl aren't limited to her love life. Madge has dropped her trainer Tracy Anderson.

It seems Madonna has grown "tired of the baggage that Tracy always seemed to be carrying with her." Anderson had insisted that her trainees abstain from any other form of exercise - no yoga, no running, etc. But it looks like the <strike>devotion</strike> narrow focus Tracy demanded has become worn out and no longer a two way street. A source told Page Six that "Tracy had grown to be more of a distraction than anything else." It is rumored that Madonna was upset that Tracy didn't accompany her on the last leg of her European tour.

For Tracy's response, continue reading.

Traveling? Go Sightrunning

When traveling to a new place, I'm sure you've been sightseeing before. Whether you're in a bus, train, or on foot, it's a great way to explore the new scenery. But why not combine the tourist and runner in you and go sightrunning instead? You'll see things you couldn't see while in a car, and you'll be able to cover more territory by running instead of walking. While on your run, you can mentally note cafes or stores you'd like to stop in later, or you can stop at places along the way whenever something piques your interest. If you're not sure where to go, many cities have companies that offer running tours. Not only will sightrunning allow you to get to know a new place, but it's also a surefire way to get in your workouts while on vacation.
Alanis Morissette Goes Vegan and Loses 20 Pounds

While many of us are just revving up our healthy New Year's resolutions, Alanis Morissette made her lifestyle overhaul months before the ball dropped. The unhealthy feeling she had from gaining weight and eating too many processed foods motivated her to make a major change, and Dr. Joel Fuhrman’s book Eat to Live gave her the tools to eat differently. Since converting to his recommended vegan diet in September, Alanis has lost 20 pounds. OK Magazine interviewed the slimmed-down singer, and here are the highlights.

On what made her gain weight: "A lot of salt and processed grains like bread. I was a sandwich person, and if I had rice, I would pack the salt on."

On why she wanted to find a new eating plan: "Longevity. I realized I want to live till I’m 120. There’s a lifestyle that I am now happily creating that can, as best as is possible, prevent most forms of cancer and other diseases."

On her workout routine: "When I’m out on tour, my shows are so physical that that really takes care of it. When I’m not on tour, I do between a half hour to an hour of light weights, running, biking, swimming, probably five times a week. I also love to kickbox and dance."

On how it feels to have lost 20 pounds: "I feel like a 12-year-old! I’m back to what I was born to be, at my best. I used to get out of bed in the morning and things were aching, and I just thought, this is what happens when you get into your 30s. But now I jump out of bed and have so much energy; I feel very alive. Even after a workout, I feel like if I rest a little bit I could go out dancing all night, so that’s exciting. I have no more aches and pains, and my allergies are gone, too."

Have you considered a vegan diet? Do you think you could handle the restrictions of no dairy or meat?

How Do You Feel About Lance Armstrong's Return to Professional Cycling?

It looks like running the NYC marathon in under three hours just isn't enough for Lance Armstrong, who will turn 37 next week. Yesterday, the seven-time winner of the Tour de France announced that he has decided to return to professional bike racing to "raise awareness of the global cancer burden" with the ultimate goal of winning an eighth Tour next Summer. His return to cycling could be the boost the sport needs.

Armstrong's reputation is slightly tarnished by circumstantial evidence suggesting he used a banned substance to help win all those tours, so could this comeback be an attempt to polish his reputation? Lance has registered with the Anti-Doping agency a while back so he will be cleared to race in the Tour de California in February.

While Armstrong has been in the news a lot lately, mostly for his penchant for blond starlets, I think it is great to see him promoting his LiveStrong foundation and cycling. He will provide more details on his comeback at the Clinton Global Initiative and begin the hard physical work of training for upcoming races.

Tell me . . .

Source

How Do You Feel About Lance Armstrong's Return to Professional Cycling?

I think it is great and that he can win the Tour one more time.

I think his fame will give cycling a much-needed boost.

I think it is inspiring, but a little odd.

I am not a fan of Lance or cycling, so this news means nothing to me.

 Other - I'll explain below.
