When I first starting working out, someone once told me that I should treat working out just like I would brushing my teeth. I thought she was nuts, wondering how on earth she could compare the two minutes of brushing my teeth to the 45 minutes of agony at the gym. She put it to me like this: you wouldn't dare go longer than a day without brushing your teeth and you should get into the habit of feeling the same way about exercise.

I LOVE running, but that wasn't always the case. As a kid, I always hated it. I played inside with my dolls to avoid those stupid tag games (I was always "it").

The end of daylight saving time means that many of us will be running in the dark. For safety reasons, try going on a morning run instead. Wake up at the same time you did during DST and use that "extra" hour for an outdoor run.

When Victoria Beckham came out as a gym addict earlier this year, people were more than a bit incredulous. Well Posh's fitness routine is once again in the news. It seems she didn't feel her old regimen of running eight miles six times a week was enough to prepare her body for her recent Emporio Armani ads with hubby soccer-stud David, so she implemented daily workouts.

One of the biggest reasons we lose interest in exercise is because either our minds, or our muscles, get bored. One way we can keep this from happening is switching workout routines every few weeks or so to keep things challenging. Me, I like to change my routine each month.

The human body is fairly adaptable, but it also has a natural desire to maintain the status quo. Meaning that, when it comes to exercise, your work is never really done because you need to keep challenging and surprising your body. As this is true in cardio, it is true in strength training too.

Since winter weather is upon us, a lot of folks are moving their work outs indoors. If you have access to a pool, swimming is a great way to mix up your cardio routine and get some cross training in. Try this beginning work out:
Warm up:
100 yrds Freestyle - easy
100 yrds pull Freestyle
50 yrds kick Freestyle
50 yrds kick Back stroke
50 yrds kick Freestyle
The Main Event:
200 yrds Freestyle (rest :30)
100 yrds Back stroke (rest: 15)
50 yrds Freestyle (rest :10)
200 yrds Medley of strokes - your choice, mix it up
Cool down:
100 kick Medley of strokes - once again you get to choose
100 Free Style - easy
Total is 1,100 yards, which equals a little more than 0.63 miles.
