I love hiking in the Fall because of the beautiful scenery and perfect weather — the crisp air never leaves me too hot or too cold. On the weekends I often go on all-day or multi-day hikes in Yosemite valley or the Lake Tahoe region. Some of my friends equate hiking with a leisurely stroll through the woods, but anyone who hikes regularly knows this isn't always the case.

Recently FitSugar reader mamasitamalita wrote in to ask about her friend who works out while buzzed. Apparently it's more common than I thought, and it's not the only thing people are doing before hitting the gym. An anonymous reader commented
"Sometimes, every once in a while, I will get stoned before yoga or a long run — it helps me to calm down and focus on the task at hand, rather than obsessing about work or personal stresses."

I gaze out past the middle finger of my left hand into the Hollywood Hills as my right quad quivers holding Warrior 2. This is when Bob Harper, trainer from The Biggest Loser, says, "You might be feeling a bit of heat in your thigh right about now." He's teaching a yoga class to a few bloggers and ladies of the press, and we all laugh as our legs burn.

If you are looking to keep the surf of Summer alive in your landlocked life, you might want to try a dry version of stand-up paddling (SUP). Riding a long skateboard by Kahuna Creations while paddling yourself about with a Big Stick is the skating version of the popular water sport. As you can see, Matthew McConaughey is a fan of skate paddling; I would say I am too, but I'm not quite proficient enough at stopping yet to really claim to be a fan.

New At-Home Fertility Test Kit
Fertell, the first at-home fertility test kit, became commercially available in June 2007. The Fertell kit contains tests to screen for both male and female infertility. Men can test their semen for concentrations of motile sperm, while women can test their urine for levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (a marker for egg quality).

Research News:
- About 3,000 nonsmokers die each year of lung cancer resulting from exposure to secondhand smoke, according to a 2006 Surgeon General report.
- Advexin, a genetic therapy that contains the p53 tumor-suppressor gene, is showing promise. A 2006 study in Japan found that out of 13 patients with advanced NSCLC receiving Advexin, 10 had stabilized. Advexin is in Phase II clinical trials for NSCLC.
- Studies are finding that NSCLC tumors in people who never smoked have a much higher rate of epithelial growth-factor receptor (EGFR) mutations.
