I am always looking for a way to do something new, fitness wise. At one point, step aerobics was the latest thing, but that time has since come and gone. You'll still find step classes in almost every gym, but they are not nearly as popular as they once were.

2009 is the year of firsts for Valerie Bertinelli. Back in March she appeared in a bikini on the cover of People magazine after losing 50 pounds, and this weekend she completed the Napa-to-Sonoma Wine Country Half-Marathon. Valerie crossed the finish line in 2:12:19 and commented, "I am in amazement.

If you have a regular fitness routine, you may prefer alternating between days of cardio and days of strength training. On your strength training days, don't just jump right into your squats and lateral raises. Do a little cardio before you lift.

Due to a slow going construction project, my husband's elliptical is living with some neighbors. They love it, but we miss it. At the gym recently, looking to work my backside while getting my heart rate up, I did this elliptical workout and played with the incline.

Lately I've been mixing up my cardio routine with the rowing machine, which has the advantage of often being open at the gym when the ellipticals and treadmills are taken. If you've never tried your hand at this old-school contraption, I highly recommend taking a seat and giving it a try.
