Tips For Springtime Running in the Rain

Spring is almost here, and if you're itching to get off of the treadmill, warm temperatures mean outdoor runs. But, since Spring often equals showers, an outdoor run could be nearly thwarted by weather. Don't be afraid of the rain - with a few simple adjustments to your normal routine you'll be on your way to a great run, elements and all.

Do not wear cotton. While comfortable, cotton shirts, shorts, socks, anything soaks up water quickly, becoming heavy and generally uncomfortable. Stick to wicking materials, and finish your outfit with a waterproof top layer.
Wear high(er) socks. Speaking of socks, since running in the rain can cause blisters, choose a pair of (non-cotton) socks that reach above your sneakers. I'm not prone to blisters, but one rainy run with too-short socks had me limping to the finish.

Exercising in the heat and humidity of Summer can be unbearable, not to mention, it can be a health risk. So when the clouds roll in and rain starts to sprinkle from the sky, it can offer relief. If you've never considered exercising in the rain, it's time to give it a try. You just need to arm yourself with these tips.

Check the weather map. A little drizzle is much easier to run in than a full on downpour. Be patient and wait for a bad storm to pass before heading outside.
Just because it's raining, doesn't mean you need to get wet. Wear a water and windproof lightweight raincoat made of breathable material that will keep you dry on the outside and cool on the inside.
Get a pair of shorts or pants made of waterproof material that will repel droplets from the sky and splashes from puddles.

Do You Work Out in the Rain?

For almost two weeks we've been getting a lot of rain where I live, which is pretty unusual. The first few nights were nice - the thunder and lightning were exciting, and I felt cozy bundled up inside. By the weekend I was over it. I couldn't go for a hike or a bike ride, and climbing was definitely out of the question.

Despite only heading to the gym and the yoga studio for my workouts, I did notice a very small number of runners and cyclists braving it in this weather. Some of them were decked out in head-to-toe weatherproof gear, while others didn't seem to care. Regardless of what they were wearing, I thought it was still very punk rock of them. These weren't pleasant afternoon showers I'm talking about - more like torrential downpours. Also, it was cold!

A menacing storm couldn't keep these folks from their workouts! Tell me . . .

Amy Poehler and Archie Aren't Afraid of a Rainy Day

Funny lady and mama Amy Poehler was spotted having a grand time shopping with her son Archie this week, despite the stormy weather in Los Angeles. Amy's laid-back California mommy look is a far cry from her bright red one-shouldered Jay Godfrey gown at the Golden Globes, but decidedly more comfortable.

I've always found shopping and cruising town with my tots in harsh weather to be particularly stressful, so I tip my umbrella to Amy's effort to have fun and get her to-do list done amid raindrops. Indian Women Asked to Plow Fields Naked For Rain

Modern women in eastern India have been asked to participate in an ancient tradition: plowing dry fields naked with the hope that it will embarrass the weather gods and urge them to respond with a much needed monsoon.

This year, Indian farmers are worrying over a very dry start to the monsoon season and having nude women plow the fields while chanting hymns is the most trusted custom among farmers. Interestingly, only unmarried women are allowed to participate.

If I were asked to plow fields naked to help California's drought problem, you could bet that more than the weather gods would be embarrassed.
