Nature's Path Veri-Berry Oatmeal

I am a fan of holistic Dr. Andrew Weil and when I saw that he had teamed up with Nature'sPath I was more than a little excited.

While I am normally a steel-cut oats gal, sometimes I don't have the time to invest in cooking that oatmeal. For those rushed mornings the Veri-Berry Hot Oatmeal is a perfect quick breakfast on the go. It is made entirely with organic ingredients (even the thickening agent inulin is organic) and flavored with dried cherries, cranberries, and raspberries.

To see nutritional information and what a bowl truly looks like read more.

I really liked this oatmeal, although the photo on the box leads one to believe there will be a lot of berries per bowl. It is whole grain, low fat, low sodium, and not too sweet. It kept me full for four hours! A box of eight packets is $4.79.

Fit's Tip: I try using the microwave to prepare the oatmeal once and the texture was a bit like glue. It is so much better to add boiling water, stir, and let it sit for minute.

Kashi Go Lean: Blueberry Waffles

Breakfast truly is the most important meal of the day - it helps fire up your metabolism! There are so many healthy and quick options to choose from, you really have no excuse not to eat a little somethin'-somethin' in the morning.

I love toaster waffles and while hanging out in the frozen food section recently (it was HOT outside), I discovered Kashi GOLEAN Waffles with Blueberries. I have been eating Van's Waffles for years, I thought I would push my personal boundaries and try a new waffle.

The Kashi waffle is loaded with goodness and low in the calorie department. My major problem is the waffles, no matter how long I toasted them, never became crispy. The texture is just lacking and a little sponge like. I found the Kashi waffle wasn't as sweet as the Van's, which is fine with me. Curiously enough, the Kashi waffles contain a bit more sugar and a lot more protein! Two waffles with some plain yogurt and sliced banana kept me full from breakfast until lunch - no morning snack needed.

Here's a nutritional comparison:

Brand

Serving Size

Calories

Fat (g)

Fiber (g)

Protein (g)

Sugar (g)

Kashi Go Lean Blueberry

2 waffles - 84 g

170

3

6

8

4

Van's Organic Blueberry

2 waffles - 80 g

240

10

4

5

2

Try some for yourself - here is the Kashi store locator so you can find a grocery that sells them near you.

You Asked: Energy Bar For a Meal?

Dear Fit,
I just got off the phone with a friend and I need some advice. She says for breakfast, she eats one Balance Bar. I know some bars are fortified with vitamins, but this doesn't seem like enough to me - calorie- or nutrition-wise. What do you think? Is it OK to eat an energy bar for a meal?
-Concerned Friend

This is an excellent question because I think many people grab a bar for a quick meal because it's quick, easy, and fairly inexpensive. Is it enough, though? To find out what I think read more.

Replacing a meal with an energy bar is not a good idea. For one, most bars contain only about 200 calories. That calorie amount is suitable for a snack, not a meal. Another reason is that those bars were designed to give someone energy before or after a workout, so they tend to be high in carbs and low in fiber. That translates to quick energy at first, but your friend probably feels tired and hungry soon after. The low fiber issue may also affect regularity. The bottom line is that energy bars are not designed to replace a well-balanced meal, since they won't offer the same kind of nutrition. Even the ones that are fortified with vitamins and minerals only offer about 25 percent of your RDI, which isn't very much.

I think it's best to ask your friend why she's only eating an energy bar for breakfast. Is she short on time? Is she trying to lose weight? Does she think it's healthy? Once you find out her reasoning, you can suggest healthy breakfast ideas that suit her needs. There are plenty of tasty options that are high in protein and fiber to offer sustained energy, are easy to make, and won't break the calorie bank.

            Dear FitSugar,
In my effort to be healthier and lose a bit of weight, I have decided to add breakfast to my daily meal plan rather than skipping it out of laziness and lack of time. Should I focus on protein or fiber in the morning? Can you give me some ideas for quick and easy balanced breakfasts?
- New Early Morn' Eater

I applaud your efforts to eat breakfast! I really do believe it is the most important meal of the day. It stokes your metabolism, provides sustained energy throughout your morning, and can help you from over snacking in the afternoon. Ideally, your first meal of the day should have both fiber and protein since both help keep you feeling full. Here are five breakfast ideas, to help you cover your nutritional needs.

Healthy Recipe: Oatmeal, Dark Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Muffins

The girls and I did a little baking this weekend and concocted a pumpkin muffin recipe that I just had to share. Using pumpkin not only gives these muffins a distinctly autumnal flavor, it keeps the muffins moist without a lot of fat. I added oatmeal for extra fiber and dark chocolate chips for a little extra zip. My daughters love them and they make for a quick but surprisingly filling breakfast - the perfect snack before heading out on a long bike ride offering five grams of protein and 4 grams of fiber. If you have a tasty dish to share, please add it to the Healthy Recipe group.

Check out the recipe when you read more.

Oatmeal Pumpkin Muffins
Inspired by Carrots-n-Cake and About: Lowfat Cooking

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/2 cups old fashioned oats
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon allspice
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 1/2 cups canned pumpkin
3 tablespoons canola oil
one large egg
one large egg white
1/4 cup lowfat milk
1/2 cup dark chocolate chips (optional)
1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Directions

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F and line muffin tin with muffin cups.

Whisk dry ingredients and spices together in a large bowl.

Add pumpkin, oil, milk, and egg and egg white to a medium size bowl and mix thoroughly. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredient and mix well. Stir in chocolate chips and walnuts.

Fill muffin cases evenly and bake for 18 to 25 minutes

Makes 14 muffins.

Snack Attack: Apple, Peanut Butter, and Pumpkin Seed Stacks

Take advantage of Fall's harvest and pick up some fresh apples for this healthy and delicious snack. The apples will not only satisfy your sweet tooth and your need to crunch, but they're also a great source of fiber. I used Pink Lady apples for this recipe, but you can use any variety you like. Munch on these stackers for breakfast or a light lunch, or cut the recipe in half if you just want to make a little snack.

To learn how to whip up this quick treat and see the nutritional info for it keep on reading

Healthy and Quick: Van's Waffles for Breakfast

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, no lie. And it is the most important meal of the day too. It jump starts your metabolism and eating breakfast regularly is one habit of healthy people (there are 6 others, but this one is easy). Now on those rushed mornings when the toaster is your only option, don't stick any old toaster pastry in there. Go with Van's waffles.

Van's waffles are a hit at my house even my little girls love them. We buy only the ones with the whole grain stamp on the box, since not all Van's varieties are created equal when it comes to fiber and it is the fiber that keeps you full. I go for the Flax variety since it contains 6 grams of fiber as well as 1600 mg of omega-3s. Eating 2 of these waffles in the morning is a great non-fishy way to get more of that good fat in your diet. The MultiGrain waffle is also popular at my house. While it only has 5 grams of fiber per serving, it has 4 grams sugar (1 less than the flax) and only 190 calories, that is 70 calories less than the flax variety. When shopping for the Van's waffles read the labels since some of them are not as healthy as my faves.

I top them with Fage non-fat yogurt and fresh fruit. There is no need to add syrup since the waffles are sweet on their own.

If you'd like to try some, just enter your zip code on Van's home page and they will find the store closest to you that sells them. Look for them at Trader Joe's, since they have the best price.

10 Eating Tips For Avoiding the Freshman 15

The dorm dining hall can be dangerous - like a giant, all-you-can-eat buffet available all day, every day. It's no wonder most of us gain some weight when going off to college, though the infamous "freshman 15" is really more like 10 pounds.

Whether you're eating in a dining hall or cooking for yourself in your first apartment, a few simple strategies can help you avoid that first-year college weight gain. Here are my tips for eating healthy at the university level.

Don't skip meals, especially breakfast. Starting with a filling breakfast helps steady your metabolism throughout the day. Here are five ideas for quick but healthy starts.

Drink lots of water. At the dining hall, during lectures, throughout cram sessions, whenever! Skip the soda and carry a water bottle that you can refill throughout the day to prevent constipation and bloating.

Include at least three food groups in every meal. When choosing from the endless dining hall bounty, make an effort to get plenty of fresh fruits and veggies, lean protein, and calcium - not just pizza and chicken fingers.

For the rest of my top 10 healthy eating tips, read more.

Control your portions. Just because you can fill your plate every time doesn't mean you should. Familiarize yourself with what proper portions look like and stick to them.

Treat yourself once a day. From sundae bars to fresh baked cookies, desserts abound at the dining hall. Go ahead and indulge, but limit yourself to one treat a day. If you have a cookie after lunch, skip the ice cream after dinner.

Avoid a fourth meal. In my dorm-room days, there were always late-night pizzas being delivered or roommates making mac and cheese at midnight. It's OK to fortify yourself with the occasional snack while studying, but make sure it's actually a snack, not the equivalent of a second dinner or dessert.

Stock healthy snacks. For those late-night study sessions when you do get hungry, keep your dorm room full of healthy snacks, like nuts, pretzels, fruit, popcorn, and nutrition bars.

Pick your liquor carefully. Freshman aren't supposed to drink! But chances are, you will anyway. Remember: alcoholic beverages are full of empty calories, and sugary cocktails are the worst for both calories and hangovers.

Shop smart. If you live in an apartment, learn to shop for one person by choosing healthy foods that won't go bad before you can finish them: frozen vegetables and fruit, yogurt, low-fat string cheese, and healthy frozen meals are all great options.

Exercise! OK, this isn't really a healthy eating tip, but it's an essential part of keeping the pounds off in college. Walk or bike to class, frequent the school gym, or join an intramural team and get moving!

What are your tips for incoming freshmen looking to avoid the traditional weight gain?
