Jul 29 2008 - 3:00am So you went hiking last weekend and you accidentally tromped through a patch of
poison ivy. You've got a nasty, blistery rash all over your feet and you want it to go away pronto. I've only tried a few of these
home remedies, so I can't vouch for all of them, but anything's worth one try when you're itching like crazy.

Wash the area thoroughly as soon as you can (preferably within 10-15 minutes) WITH SOAP or detergent, along with any clothes that might have been contaminated. Also, rubbing alcohol.
Try taking an antihistamine. Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride (Benadryl, Dimedrol, Nytol) is a good choice, but try whatever you've got.
If you have any difficulty breathing, see a doctor right away.
Soaking the area in ice water occasionally should help relieve the itch.
1I can't believe the mango one works - mangoes are in the same family as poison ivy and their skins contain a much weaker form of the toxin that give you a rash. Some super-sensitive people even get irritation from eating mango right off the skin.
2I am super sensitive to poison ivy and this helped me a lot a couple summers ago when I had a bad case on my legs: run super-duper hot water over the blisters (easiest if you have a detachable shower head)--as hot as you can stand--until the tingling goes away. It will prickle like the dickens at first but then subside and feel 100% better, plus it helps dry out/heal the blisters. I did this 1-2 times a day and it worked way better than any cream.

4Stefanie, I'm one of those super sensitive people. I would get this itchy, rough patch on my lips every once in awhile, and could never figure it out. Finally one day I remembered specifically that I had chowed down on a mango (I used to like to eat them all sloppy-like and pretend I lived on an island) the day before, so I looked it up online and discovered that.
Now I have to wash my mangoes thoroughly, cut the skin off, wash my hands again and THEN eat it.
5I am so glad I've never encountered poison ivy because I'm sure my sensitive skin would break out instantly. Good to know that these home remedies work! Interesting that the tomato juice thing works on poison ivy just as well as it gets rid of skunk smell.
6Dude you need to specify on the mangos do NOT use green mangos the milky sap can make it worse and if you get it on you, you can cause irritation to the skin (aka the itchy rash.) and second from personal. Exp.
7NEVER EVER EAT THE SKIN OF A MANGO. You might as well bath in poison ivy if you do.
