Fun Podcast Alert: Fitness Attack

If you have 60 seconds, you have time for a Fitness Attack. It is a gem of podcast full of bite-size, easily-digestible tips delivered to you in just under a minute. Fitness Attack hostess, personal trainer Amy Mac, provides diverse health tips ranging from fitness and diet to weight loss.

The latest tip is great and it's about grating your food. It is more than a tip than a visual trick. It seems the people recognize shredded or grated food as larger portions. By grating a bit of cheese as a topping for salad or pasta, you will feel satisfied that you are eating cheese, but you will be shaving off the calories by eating less than you would if you cut yourself a chunk of cheese.

You can subscribe to the podcast at iTunes and best of all it is free!

Listen Up and Get Moving

We all know that music is a great motivator, but sometimes I need more than a beat to keep me on a machine. The elliptical and the stair stepper can get pretty dull if you use them day in and day out.

Sometimes, I like to hit the gym and listen to a podcast. Two of my favorites are This American Life and Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me! Both are NPR programs, and both keep me entertained and on the machine. I can listen to music in my noisy house or at work, but I can't focus on the spoken word in those situations. When it is a cardio machine and me, the podcast has my undivided attention - well, mostly. Plus I stay on the machine because I know if I don't listen to the entire program at the gym, there will be no other time to finish it.

If you are afraid that listening to NPR podcasts means you are an old fogey, then check out Podcast.net, a very thorough podcast directory. You should be able to find a podcast there that will interest you.

If you have a favorite podcast that you listen to when working out, tell me about it in the comment section below. Then maybe I can branch out past my NPR faves.

Would You Want Danny Bonaduce as Your Trainer?

Recently I was checking out Podfitness, a new site that offers personal training podcasts by many prominent trainers. Names such as as David Kirsch (Heidi Klum's trainer), Mandy Ingber (Jennifer Aniston's trainer), Michael George (Reese Witherspoon's trainer), and Danny Bonaduce (former child actor?) are available by download.

Wait, Danny Bonaduce. Yup, Danny Bonaduce.

I have heard that Danny has had his hand in fitness lately (boxing and wrestling for charity), but didn't he recently drop someone on their head on stage during an award show? Battery and assault are not really things I'm looking for in a personal trainer.

I've also watched about 1.5 episodes of Breaking Bonaduce and I can honestly say I would not want Danny as my personal trainer, but maybe I am alone here. Would you? Even if it were free (which it's not, Podfitness is $19.95 per month)?

Listen Up: Inflammatory Breast Cancer Podcast

A few years ago, I received multiple mass e-mails from friends warning me about inflammatory breast cancer. I have to tell you: I ignored them. It seemed like an urban myth to me at the time.

Well, I was wrong, and maybe you ignored information about this form of breast cancer too. Since the month of October is dedicated to increasing breast cancer awareness, I thought I should share a podcast produced by the Mayo Clinic about inflammatory breast cancer. I learned a lot about the disease and all I had to do was listen.

While the podcast is a little dry, it is only seven minutes long. I think you should spend seven minutes of your time to learn about this variation on breast cancer. It is an aggressive form of cancer and spreads quickly to the lymph system. Yep, that was my scare tactic to get you to pay attention.

Here is the Mayo Clinic podcast. You can also read the transcript too.

Great Fitness Podcast: Kacey Duke's In Home Series

Sometimes fitness podcasts can be a little hard to follow so when I came across some that I actually really enjoyed, I had to share them with you.

Kacey Duke, a well known trainer out of New York City, has a series of podcasts available free to download on PodCastGo. My favorite series, and one that I know you guys will enjoy, is her In Home Series. Not only does she teach you how to workout in the comfort of your very own home, she is also great at teaching you exactly how to do it (and at different levels). The podcasts are short and sweet, but sure to leave you feeling the burn when you're done.

You do have to sign up as a member of PodCastGo, but it's totally free and totally worth it!

Working women/brides-to-be have so much to think about: flowers, the ceremony, bridesmaids, the cake, the honeymoon. Planning the wedding is almost a full time job!

Are you the type that needs (and likes) a little extra motivation while you work out? Maybe you'd like to learn as you go?

EndurancePlanet.com has dozens and dozens of informative podcasts that are professionally done and put you right in the middle of the interview. The interviews are top quality and pretty interesting to listen to (if you're into fitness). Each interview can easily be downloaded and added to your iPod or MP3 player for easy listening while running or biking.

One example from this week's Podcasts on EndurancePlanet:

Gary Levin of The Institute of Human Performance is a Strength and Conditioning Specialist and USAT Level II coach specializing in endurance sports. In this interview we talk about functional strength training for triathletes and other endurance athletes and some specific exercises you can do to increase the strength of your core. We also talk about the debate between low weight / high reps vs. high weight / low reps. Gary talks about how even small amounts of gym work will help you become a better performing endurance athlete.

Check out the podcast with Gary Levin and more on EndurancePlanet.com.

Work it at home: i-TRAIN pod casts

If working out alone is getting stale, but you can't make it to classes because of your schedule then i-TRAIN might just be for you.
The website offers a variety of workout programs as pod casts for you to down load to your i-pod or MP3 player. Try iTREAD for your treadmill time or iSCULPT ballet to get the backside of a ballerina. But as the site says, "Put your trainer in your pocket and change your body."

i-Train's offerings are definitely cheaper than a personal trainer. You can subscribe to 5 workouts per month for $9.99, or 3 workouts a month for 12 months for $49.99. Or if you want a variety of workouts or just to give the site a try you can purchase individual sessions for only 99 cents.

I admit, I am bummed that they don't have an elliptical program and I think the more dancey routines might be a bit difficult to follow without visuals.

You have so much to think about: flowers, the ceremony, invitations, your dress, the cake, and the honeymoon. Planning the wedding can be as much work as a full-time job!
If you don't mind paying a little, the audiobook called Wedding Planning ($12.95) gives insights from wedding planner Susannah Richardson, so you can have as little stress as possible when planning for your big day.
